        Alexandra - die letzte Zarin

        by Gunna Wendt

        Sie war eine der mächtigsten Frauen der Welt: Alexandra Fjodorowna, die letzte Zarin. Bereits im Alter von 12 Jahren traf die gebürtige Prinzessin Alix von Hessen den russischen Thronfolger Nikolaus. Trotz großer Widerstände heiratete das Paar zehn Jahre später, und Alix wurde mit 23 Jahren Zarin von Russland. Von den kaiserlichen Verwandten ebenso wie von politischen Gegnern verachtet und verleumdet, wurde aus der schüchternen jungen Frau eine durchsetzungsfähige Herrscherin, die für ihre neue Heimat kämpfte. Doch die drohende Katastrophe konnte sie nicht verhindern … Gunna Wendt schildert das glanzvolle und dramatische Leben der Alexandra Fjdorowna. Sie erzählt von der starken Frau an der Seite des letzten Zaren, vom Kampf der liebevollen Mutter um das Leben ihres Sohnes, von der verhängnisvollen Freundschaft zu dem umstrittenen Wanderprediger und Wunderheiler Rasputin und von ihrem tragischen Ende während der Oktoberrevolution.

        Katja chinesisch

        Eine fremde Erzählung

        by Dmitri Prigow, Christiane Körner

        Katja wächst als Tochter russisch-britischer Emigranten in Tientsin in China auf. Es sind die 1940er Jahre und später, die Spuren von Krieg und Gewalt überall spürbar. Als junges Mädchen wird sie die Entscheidung treffen, fortan in der Sowjetunion zu leben, und reist mit dem Zug nach Taschkent. Während draußen Schnee und Landschaft vorbeiziehen, wallen in ihr die Erinnerungen an das privilegierte Leben in der ausländischen Konzession auf, an die Wunder und Wunderlichkeiten, die Drachen, Stoffe, Texturen, an das oft rätselhafte Verhalten der Erwachsenen, deren Leben von der Geschichte durchgewirbelt wurde. Und dann ist da noch der Erzähler, der die sanften, auch absonderlichen Bilder jener russischen Kindheit in China immer wieder mit der eigenen im trüben sowjetischen Plattenbau verschaltet, als die Moskauer »Patriarchenteiche« gerade zu »Pionierteichen« geworden waren. In seinem letzten Roman erforscht Dmitri Prigow den fremden Kontinent einer Kindheit und birgt die kindliche Wahrnehmung, Welterfahrung, in wunderbar zarte poetische Bilder.

        In Strange Countries: Middle English Literature and its Afterlife

        Essays in memory of J. J. Anderson

        by Anke Bernau, David Matthews

        These essays by senior scholars in medieval studies celebrate the career of J.J. Anderson, editor, critic, and co-founder of the Manchester Medieval Literature and Culture series, who taught in medieval studies at the University of Manchester for forty years. The essays are rooted in medieval literature but frequently range beyond the confines of the Middle Ages. They reflect the breadth of Anderson's own scholarly interests, especially in drama and Arthurian literature. There is a particular focus on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Pearl, poems which preoccupied him throughout his scholarly life. There are also new reconsiderations of La?amon's Brut, Mirk's Festial, the Passion plays, and the manuscripts of the Pore Caitif. Moving beyond the traditional purview of medieval literature, several contributors trace the afterlives of medieval themes in later literature. These essays include a consideration of the twinned trajectories of the medieval heroes Robin Hood and King Arthur from medieval literature to modern television, a comparison of La?amon's Brut and Tennyson's Idylls of the King, and a recreation of the Bishop Blase procession which took place in industrial Bradford. Contributors are Rosamund Allen, Ralph Elliott, Alexandra Johnston, Stephen Knight, Peter Meredith, Susan Powell, Gillian Rudd, Alan Shelston, and Kalpen Trivedi. ;

        Plant Biotechnology, Second Edition

        by William G. Hopkins; Series Editor: William G. Hopkins

        Over the past 25 years, terms like genetic modification, genetic engineering, recombinant DNA technology, and biotechnology have become commonplace in the news and in the public vocabulary. But biotechnology has in fact been practiced for thousands of years, with the aim of harnessing organisms for processing food and making useful products. Since the 1980s, however, recombinant DNA technology has given us the ability to modify organisms in the most fundamental way. The modification of plants by these new techniques has unleashed a storm of public controversy worldwide. Plant Biotechnology, Second Edition brings perspective to the discussion. Tracing the history of biotechnology, from its origins in antiquity through its foundations as a science in the work of Louis Pasteur to the birth of modern genetic engineering, this eBook describes traditional uses for plants, reveals how they are genetically engineered, and explains how new technology compares with conventional ways of generating new food plants. Readers will find that this accessible introduction dispels some of the myths surrounding genetic engineering, clearly presents the current impact and future potential of genetically modified plants, and provides a balanced look at the risks and benefits of biotechnology.
