        A Genious and a Scoundrel

        by María Luisa Martínez

How did a Caravaggio, painted between 1605 and 1609, end up at a Madrid auction in 2021? Un Genio y un Canalla meticulously reconstructs the Ecce Homo's mysterious journey, a painting initially attributed to José de Ribera, now recognized as the work of the Italian master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Spanning the Italian Baroque, the post-war era, and the 21st century, María Luisa Martínez Haces's novel explores the creation, hidden trajectory, and astonishing rediscovery of this lost masterpiece, guiding us through interconnected lives caught in a web of artistic ambition, human passions, and moral compromises. From its genesis to its clandestine passage to Spain, to the detective work that unearthed its true origins – revealing it in the hands of a Spanish family before its acquisition by a British collector – the novel weaves historical fact with fictional characters, culminating in its current display at the Museo del Prado, a testament to the enduring power of hidden truths. Like Tracy Chevalier's Girl with a Pearl Earring, Un Genio y un Canalla ignites the imagination, but unlike its predecessor, this novel dares to expose the high price of artistic genius, blurring the line between what we believe and what we know to be true.

by Peter W B Phillips, Jeremy Karwandy, Graeme Webb, Camille D Ryan

Innovation has moved through a range of revolutionary epochs, but there is no clear picture of how, or even if, innovation can be managed. This book explores the models, methods and metrics of innovation analysis in the context of a single centre: the Global Oilseeds Complex centred in Saskatoon, Canada. It is a single, coherent volume that outlines the theory and practices related to innovation, offering a critical assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the different approaches, backed up with empirical evidence.

        Fundamentals of Soil Science

        by A Raja Rajan

Soil is a finite resource and its loss and degradation is not recoverable within a human lifespan. Soils affect the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe and our overall health and the health of all organisms on the planet. Without healthy soils, we would not be able to grow our food, or meet our fibre and fodder requirements. It is estimated that 95 per cent of our food is directly or indirectly produced on our soils. The book provides the basic understanding of the soil, its nature, properties and functions. It has been attempted to present in a logical sequence all basic information about soils, from the definition of soil to how they are formed, the factors and processes governing their formation, their intrinsic properties, classification, functions, and the role they play in the global environment today and for a sustainable tomorrow. Emphasis on soil quality and soil health care has been laid as it is the order of the day. The 32 chapters of the book will provide a wealth of information for those looking to take their first deep dive into the realm of soils.
