        The Costume of China

        Fifty Coloured Engravings

        by William Alexander

        In 1814, carefully selecting 50 Chinese engravings that were supplemented by wonderful text descriptions, William Alexander published the book The Costume of China in London. As the pioneering work introducing Chinese dresses overseas, this book is a true and complete restoration of the customs of China in the Emperor Qianlong era. It is now available in both Chinese and English as a hardcover book set. 50 precious hand-colored engravings depict the images of emperors, officials, soldiers, court ladies, booksellers, actors, and hawkers. They show us, in the eyes of Europeans, the Qianlong Heyday, a colorful era that dates back far.

        Rebellische Frauen - Women in Battle

        150 Jahre Kampf für Freiheit, Gleichheit, Schwesterlichkeit. Graphic Novel

        by Marta Breen, Jenny Jordahl, Nora Pröfrock

        Die Handvoll Sand

        Gedichte aus dem Nachlaß

        by Karl Krolow, Charitas Jenny-Ebeling, Karl Krolow, Charitas Jenny-Ebeling

        »Als ginge es um eine Wette, / wie lange man noch vorhanden« – mit diesen Worten beschrieb Karl Krolow, was ihm gegen Ende seines Lebens geschah: Bis kurz vor seinem Tod am 21. Juni 1999 schrieb er oft mehrere Gedichte an einem Tag, über 700 in drei Jahren, 150 Gedichte allein in den letzten zwei Lebensmonaten. Die »tägliche Buchung«, wie er dieses Schreiben nannte, war ihm lebensnotwendig in einem ganz elementaren Sinn: es galt, sich der eigenen Existenz zu vergewissern und dem Tod – von Wort zu Wort und von Zeile zu Zeile – zu widerstehen. Es sind die Freuden des Lebens, die er, Abschied nehmend, noch einmal aufrief.

The book productively brings together academic research and professional practice, and will be essential reading for all those interested in, and concerned with the future of, 'heritage' and its interpretation. ;

        Reconsidering Gallipoli

        by Jenny Macleod

        The British cultural history of the Gallipoli campaign has been overlooked until now - this is a significant book as it offers the first real opportunity for this important campaign to be included in undergraduate courses on WWI. The commemoration of war is a particularly vibrant area of study - Anzac Day, commemorating the landings that began the Gallipoli campaign, is central to Australian national consciousness and this book examines why. A crucial argument in the cultural history of the First World War was sparked by Paul Fussell's contention that the war signified a profound cultural rupture; in widening the debate from the Western Front, this book supports the counter argument that romantic modes of expression retained resonance and utility. In Australia, the renewal of the story of Gallipoli by historians and film-makers (notably Peter Weir's 1981 film starring Mel Gibson) has profoundly altered the national sense of identity and society's perceptions of the armed forces; the authors explains how the writing of this particular event has developed and achieved this central position. An essential volume for those interested in British military and Australian history, postcolonialism and nation building, from academics and students through to the general reader.
