IN THE FOREST OF NO JOY
The Congo-Océan Railroad and the Tragedy of French Colonialism
by JP Daughton
The epic story of the Congo-Océan railroad and the human costs of empire. The untold story of one of the deadliest construction projects in history. Between 1921 and 1934, French colonial interests recruited -- most often by force -- more than 100,000 men, women, and children to build a 500-kilometer stretch of rail through forests and mountains from Congolese Brazzaville to the Atlantic Coast. By the time of its completion, tens of thousands of Africans were dead, killed by mistreatment, starvation, and disease. The book recounts the experiences of local communities in the face of this amoral colonial economic development, to consider why the railroad witnessed such extraordinary violence and suffering, and explores the excuses defenders of the project used to justify the loss of so many African lives.

The Magistracy at the Crossroads
by David Faulkner (Editor), Sally Dickinson (Editor)
Backed by the Magistrates’ Association and coincides with the 650th anniversary of JPs. Essential reading for criminal justice practitioners, this is a key text at a critical time for government and the courts and is supported by a substantial media campaign. A celebratory volume and collection piece. After 650 years justices of the peace find themselves at a crossroads. This book looks at the role of one of the UK’s oldest institutions in a rapidly changing world. Well-informed, thought-provoking and published at a critical time when government is looking to find ever more efficient and cost-effective ways to deliver justice, this book by leading commentators from the courts, universities, the media and the magistracy itself examines the options for the future. It looks at economic and other pressures as well as demands for new kinds of community justice and changing ideas about public and voluntary service. It’s sheer breadth, expertise and diversity of views means it will be in demand across the criminal justice system as the best word on the subject. What is the modern-day role of the magistracy and how might it better serve the citizens to whom it ultimately belongs? From an age-old institution as a bastion of democracy to the idea that there should be fresh avenues of engagement and a greater sense of a fairness and transparency, each of the distinguished contributors’ chapters adds to the considerable value of a highly innovative and readable work.

Dustoff 7-3
Saving Lives under Fire in Afghanistan
by Erik Sabiston
This book is for heroes. Dustoff 7-3 tells the true story of four unlikely heroes in the rugged mountains of Afghanistan, where medics are forced to descend on wires to reach the wounded and helicopter pilots must fight wind, weather, and enemy fire to pluck casualties from some of the world's most difficult combat arenas. Complete opposites thrown together, cut off, and outnumbered, Chief Warrant Officer Erik Sabiston and his flight crew answered the call in a race against time, not to take lives-but to save them. The concept of evacuating wounded soldiers by helicopter developed in the Korean War and became a staple during the war in Vietnam where heroic, unarmed chopper crews flew vital missions known to the grateful grunts on the ground as Dustoffs. The crew of Dustoff 7-3 carried on that heroic tradition, flying over a region that had seen scores of American casualties, known among veterans as the Valley of Death. At the end of Operation Hammer Down, they had rescued 14 soldiers, made three critical supply runs, recovered two soldiers killed in action, and nearly died. It took all of three days.

Run Between the Raindrops
Author's Preferred Edition
by Dale A. Dye
The blood-drenched Navy Corpsman had it right as he labored to keep yet another Marine alive on the mean street of Hue City: “Getting out of Hue alive is like trying to run between raindrops without getting wet.” Nearly half a century has passed since Marine veteran Dale Dye fought in Hue during the 1968 Tet Offensive. That brutal experience prompted him to write a searing, critically acclaimed novel about the surreal experiences of the battle to wrest control of Vietnam’s ancient Imperial capital from regiments of fanatical North Vietnamese Army soldiers. Now he’s taken a long second look at that fight and revised his original work into an even more powerful narrative of one of the Vietnam War’s most brutal battles. The story is told through the eyes of a veteran Marine Corps Combat Correspondent with the observational skills and off-beat attitude to relate what he sees from the close-quarter, house-to-house meat-grinder of the southside to the epic assault on the enemy-infested walls of the city’s medieval Citadel in a voice that reflects the Code of the Grunt: Just do it—or die trying. There it is.
