        Horns Ende

        Roman

        by Christoph Hein

        Patty Pan Compote

        by Olha Kari

"Patty Pan Compote" is a series of reportage sketches and essays describing how a whole generation of Ukrainians lived amidst the chaos of declining Soviet Union. This book is about what it was like to live in the 90's, when "pineapple" compote was cooked from the patty pat and eggplant became the substitute for mushrooms, when everyone was gripped by a total knitting obsession due to the lack of clothes. People grew accustomed to stockpiling absolutely everything, and the first sanitary pads have just begun to change the lives of Ukrainian women. Based on her own recollections, the author tells how the punitive gastronomy of that time worked, how the pseudo-brotherly relations with other Soviet republics often manifested themselves and how Abkhazia hosted Ukrainian schoolchildren a few months before the war between Georgia and Abkhazia.

        Onkel J.

        Heimatkunde

        by Andreas Maier

        Schmerz Camp

        by Patty Kim Hamilton

        The Trump revolt

        by Edward Ashbee

This book considers the reasons for Donald Trump's surprise victory in the 2016 presidential election. It charts the prolonged campaign and the realigning processes that took place, analysing the ideas that defined the Trump platform, the electoral shifts in states regarded as solid 'firewalls' for the Democratic Party and the responses of Republican Party elites. Although he is subject to contradictory pressures, the book places Trump firmly within the right-wing populist tradition. However, it argues that the sentiments that drove his campaign were not only a response to economic fears, high levels of inequality and racial resentment - they were also shaped by the structural character of American governance, which fuels hostility towards Washington DC and the 'political class'. The book concludes by assessing the extent to which Trump's victory and parallel developments in Europe mark a reconfiguration of neoliberalism.

Journey in Trumplandia: The Rise of Populism in America

        by Tiberiu Dianu

The book is a collection of essays about the transformation of America, which has turned from a united nation to one more divided than ever. Some pundits predict that, if things don’t change, another civil war could occur. Have we reached a point of no return? Hopefully, America is mature enough to learn from its mistakes and avoid further scars along its evolving history. "Trumplandia is a welcome addition toward understanding current events, Washington’s international policy, and the present American society; a society polarized and divided as it has not been since the Civil War.” NICHOLAS DIMA, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor and Research Associate, Nelson Institute, James Madison University, Virginia. "The book is fascinating. It provides background to, and insights into [the] current and past political history as well as offering a personal view... of the country and society. Presented in thematic form in chapters and sections, the insights offered provide a suggestive radiography...” Dr. DENNIS DELETANT, OBE, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Washington DC. "There has been this backsliding in... what a truly functioning rule-of-law state is, that has proper separation of co-equal powers, which, if you don’t keep working on that, you backslide. And I am even worried about that here, in the United States right now, about backsliding.” OBIE MOORE, Esq., OLM Advisors LLC, Washington DC “Indeed, Trumplandia should be a welcome addition to any scholar, student or layman’s library, especially in its international edition. If anyone loses sleep over its challenging assertions, then it will have been well worth it.” ERNESTO MORALES HIZON, Ph.D. Candidate in American and Comparative Politics at Claremont Graduate University, Member, Integrated Bar of the Philippines ABOUT THE AUTHOR: TIBERIU DIANU has practiced law in Romania (as a corporate lawyer, judge, senior counselor at the Ministry of Justice, university professor and senior legal researcher), and in the United States (as a legal expert for the judiciary). He published several books and a host of articles in law, politics, and post-communist societies. Tiberiu currently lives and works in Washington, DC.

In der Sache J. Robert Oppenheimer

        Ein szenischer Bericht

        by Heinar Kipphardt

The French empire at War, 1940–1945

        by Martin Thomas

The French empire at war draws on original research in France and Britain to investigate the history of the divided French empire - the Vichy and the Free French empires - during the Second World War. What emerges is a fascinating story. While it is clear that both the Vichy and Free French colonial authorities were only rarely masters of their own destiny during the war, preservation of limited imperial control served them both in different ways. The Vichy government exploited the empire in an effort to withstand German-Italian pressure for concessions in metropolitan France and it was key to its claim to be more than the mouthpiece of a defeated nation. For Free France too, the empire acquired a political and symbolic importance which far outweighed its material significance to the Gaullist war effort. As the war progressed, the Vichy empire lost ground to that of the Free French, something which has often been attributed to the attraction of the Gaullist mystique and the spirit of resistance in the colonies. In this radical new interpretation, Thomas argues that it was neither of these. The course of the war itself, and the initiatives of the major combatant powers, played the greatest part in the rise of the Gaullist empire and the demise of Vichy colonial control.

        Hepatitis, Third Edition

by Alan Hecht, D.C. and Lyle W. Horn, Ph.D.

Hepatitis means an inflammation of the liver, but it also refers to a group of viral infections that affect the liver. There are several types of viral hepatitis, but the most common are A, B, and C. Viral hepatitis is spread through contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, or feces, though it may also result from alcohol and drug use or from other diseases. Acute hepatitis refers to the initial infection and can be mild or severe; chronic hepatitis refers to a serious condition in which the infection lasts six months or longer. Currently, vaccines are available for the prevention of hepatitis A and B viruses. This third edition of Hepatitis delves into the history, causes, and current treatments for this disease, giving valuable and up-to-date information to student researchers. Chapters include: Introduction to Hepatitis The Phases of Hepatitis Looking at the Liver Inflammation and Immune Response Hepatitis A Hepatitis B Hepatitis C.

        Thorold Dickinson

        A world of film

        by Philip Horne, Peter Swaab

        The films of Thorold Dickinson (1903-1984), now being rediscovered, engage with major issues including national identity, the post-colonial world, and political violence - and they also show a rare mastery of style, a thrilling eroticism, a preoccupation with the psychology of betrayal. But the director of Gaslight, The Next of Kin and The Queen of Spades was also an editor, documentarist, trade unionist, film producer (for the British Army and the UN), pioneering academic and controversialist. His adventurous and truly global involvement in film took him to Paris in the heyday of silent cinema in the 1920s, to Stalin's USSR in 1937, to the Spanish Civil War, to Africa, India, Israel and America. This book gives a lively, multi-angled account of Dickinson's works, life and times, conveying a sense of his own voice and fascinating character. It includes a richly detailed introduction, a film-by-film discussion of Dickinson with Scorsese, vivid personal memoirs of the director, a dossier of Dickinson's original writings and interviews from 1924 to 1973 (some never previously published), critical essays on all the feature films, and a ground-breaking reference section. The book draws on extensive archival research and close consultation with those who knew Dickinson well. Contributors include: Martin Scorsese, Gavin Millar, Lutz Becker, Charles Barr, Laura Marcus, Kevin Jackson, Kevin Gough-Yates, Ian Christie, Gregory Dart, Hillel Tryster, Janet Moat. ;
