View Rights PortalMahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) is one of the best-known and most valuable tropical timbers currently traded internationally. Concern has increased over the exploitation of mahogany, particularly as most timber is currently derived from natural forests which are not managed sustainably. Such concerns have resulted in an increased research effort focusing on the ecology of the species in natural forest. The potential of mahogany plantations as an alternative source of timber has received relatively little attention. However, evidence suggests mahogany may be a viable plantation species in many countries. The successful development of such plantations could make a major contribution towards meeting future demands for mahogany timber, and thereby help to reduce pressures on natural forest. The main aim of this book is to produce a comprehensive account of mahogany silviculture, with a particular emphasis on plantations, by bringing together the findings of foresters and researchers from mahogany-growing countries around the world. There is a logical progression through the stages of seed collection, plantation establishment, maintenance, prediction of growth and yield, protection and management of both natural stands and plantations under suitable silvicultural systems. This book is an indispensable guide and reference for those involved in growing and managing mahogany and will also be valuable to ecologists and land managers as well as students of forestry.
Hemp is enjoying a worldwide resurgence. This unique book combines a review of the hemp pest and disease literature published over the past 50 years with up-to-date information on modern biological control techniques. Each pest and disease organism is presented in the same format, covering economic impact, geographical and host-plant range, plant symptoms, taxonomic description, life history, and differential diagnosis. Important cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical controls are highlighted with charts, illustrations and explicit instructions. Easy-to-use keys are included for rapid identification of the most common pests. Introductory chapters describe the general principles of plant protection, requirements for healthy plant growth, and taxonomy of parasites and pathogens.
This new, updated 3rd edition of The Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks examines the new challenges in sustaining oak forest ecosystems in a changing world. It is essential reading for forest ecologists, silviculturists, environmentalists and wildlife managers Oak forests are the result of extensive and frequently occurring disturbances that have occurred over hundreds of years such as exploitative timber harvesting, land clearing for agriculture, recurrent burning, and free-range livestock grazing. These disturbances, perhaps counterintuitively, have created conditions favorable for sustaining oaks. But today, as those disturbances have largely disappeared and as oak forests have matured, a new problem has arisen: the widespread failure of oaks to regenerate. Oak regeneration failures and other ecological issues have become increasingly problematic under the social and economic constraints of contemporary forest management. Moreover, emerging forces such as climate change now threaten to further alter the ecological dynamics of oak forests in unpredictable ways. · - Comprehensive text which examines the many problems associated with sustaining oak forests in a changing world · - Emphasizes a view of oak forests as responsive ecosystems · - Essential reading for forest ecologists, silviculturists, environmentalists and wildlife managers
Giardia and Cryptosporidium are both parasites of considerable global interest due to the gastrointestinal problems the organisms can cause in humans as well as domestic and wild animals. This book presents a comprehensive overview of recent research. Chapters discuss topics from taxonomy, nomenclature and evolution to molecular epidemiology, advances in diagnostics and zoonotic, human and animal health issues.
Zoonotic diseases constitute a public health problem throughout the world. Addressing a little-studied area of veterinary and medical science, this book covers viral, bacterial, protozoan and helminth parasites transmitted between humans and dogs, discussing population management, control disease agents and human-dog relationships. Fully updated throughout, this new edition also includes chapters on benefits of the human-dog relationship and non-infectious disease issues with dogs. It is a valuable resource for researchers and students of veterinary and human medicine, microbiology, parasitology and public health.
Forest fragmentation will inevitably continue over the coming years, especially in developing economies. This book provides a cutting edge review of the multi-disciplinary sciences related to studies of global forest fragmentation. It specifically addresses cross-cutting themes from both an ecological and a social sciences perspective. The ultimate goal of Global Forest Fragmentation is to provide a detailed scientific base to support future forest landscape management and planning to meet global environmental and societal needs.
