Surrealism, Englishness and documentary photography

In his previous book City Gorged with Dreams (2002), Ian Walker challenged established ideas about Surrealist photography by emphasising the key role played by documentary photographs in Parisian Surrealism. Now Walker turns his attention to the arrival of Surrealism in England in 1936. Examining for the first time the surprising relationship between Surrealism and English documentary photography and film, the book shows that some of the most interesting work of the period was made in the ambiguous spaces between them. One of the key themes in this book is the relationship between the 'homely' and the 'exotic', in the innovative mix of poetry and ethnography in Mass-Observation for example, or the shadowed England constructed in the work of Bill Brandt. Based on extensive archival research, interviews and visits to sites where the photographs were made, this book is rich in detailed analysis yet written in an accessible and often witty style. ;

With the emergence of neo-liberalism in the 1980s as the dominant domestic and international political-economic orthodoxy, labour as both a social category and political movement tended to be written off or ignored by academics, politicians and commentators. However, at a time when the world's working class is growing faster than at any previous time in history and neo-liberalism is widely challenged, this orthodoxy is clearly inadequate. The spread of global production means that to ignore labour, its organisations, interests and politics, is to ignore one of the key components of that process. Labour organisations have not gone away and neither has the state: their relationship remains as significant as ever. The strategic relationship between trade unions and social movements, nationally and internationally, has also developed markedly, especially in the south. New patterns of resistance are emerging to challenge global capital and those who assert that globalisation is irresistible. ;

Samuel Beckett zeigt in Katastrophe, wie ein Gefangener in Szene gesetzt wird. Ihm gelingt zweierlei: die Katastrophe des Gefangenen zu zeigen und zugleich die ›Katastrophe‹ dessen, der dieses Elend darzustellen versucht. Edward Bond nennt sein neues Stück »Sommer« im Untertitel ein ›europäisches‹ Stück und sagt, er schreibe nicht über einen Deutschen (der in dem Stück von den Greueln der Vergangenheit berichtet, als beschreibe er einen Sonntagsausflug), sondern er schreibe über das Böse als etwas ganz Banales. C.P. Taylor versteht sein Stück »so gut, so schlecht« über den Nazi-Professor Halder als Frage nach seiner eigenen (unserer) Rolle hinsichtlich der ›Friedensverbrechen‹ der westlichen Welt gegenüber der Dritten Welt. Martin Walser untersucht, ob Abhängigkeit und Selbstverwirklichung notwendig ein Widerspruch sind. Zeitlich näher ist uns Rotter, den Thomas Brasch in seinem gleichnamigen Stück beschreibt. Wie soll man einen neuen Staat aufbauen, wenn die Menschen dieselben geblieben sind? Das Irland O'Caseys, wie weit ist das? Viel näher, als man denken könnte. Das, was in der Routine des Alltags zur Selbstverständlichkeit geworden ist, bricht unvermutet heftig aus: der bigotte Katholizismus des Stadtrats Reiligan und der ihn unterstützenden Geistlichkeit, der primitive Antikommunismus.

This sourcebook collects together for the first time in English the major documents relating to the life and contemporary reputation of Joan of Arc. Also known as La Pucelle, she led a French Army against the English in 1429, arguably turning the course of the war in favour of the French king Charles VII. The fact that she achieved all of this when just a seventeen-year-old peasant girl highlights the magnitude of her achievements and also opens up other ways of looking at her story. For many, Joan represents the voice of ordinary people in the fifteenth century; the victims of high politics and warfare that devastated France. Her story ended tragically in 1431 when she was put on trial for heresy and sorcery by an ecclesiastical court and was burned at the stake. This book shows how the trial, which was organised by her enemies, provides an important window into late medieval attitudes towards religion and gender, as Joan was effectively persecuted by the established Church for her supposedly non-conformist views on spirituality and the role of women. Presented within a contextual and critical framework, this book encourages scholars and students to rethink this remarkable story. It will be invaluable reading for those working in the fields of medieval society and heresy, as well as the Hundred Years' War. ;
