        Terry Gilliam

        by Peter Marks, Brian McFarlane, Neil Sinyard

        Terry Gilliam presents a sustained examination of one of cinema's most challenging and lauded auteurs, proposing fresh ways of seeing Gilliam that go beyond reductive readings of him as a gifted but manic fantasist. Analysing Gilliam's work over nearly four decades, from the brilliant anarchy of his Monty Python animations through the nightmarish masterpiece Brazil to the provocative Gothic horror of Tideland, it critically examines the variety and richness of Gilliam's sometimes troubled but always provocative output. The book situates Gilliam within the competing cultural contexts of the British, European and American film industries, examining his regular struggles against aesthetic and commercial pressures. He emerges as a passionate, immensely creative director, whose work encompasses a dizzying array of material: anarchic satire, childhood and adult fantasy, dystopia, romantic comedy, surrealism, road movie, fairy tale and the Gothic. The book charts how Gilliam interweaves these genres and forms to create magical interfaces between reality and the illuminating, frightening but liberating worlds of the imagination. Scrutinising the neglected importance of literature and adaptation in Gilliam's career, this study also observes him through the lenses of auteurism, genre, performance, design and national culture, explaining how someone born in Minnesota and raised in California came to be one of British television and film's most compelling figures. ;

        Sechs moderne Theaterstücke

        by Inge Greiffenhagen

        Sechs moderne Theaterstücke Brian Friel Väter und Christopher HamptonGefährliche Liebschaften Bodo Kirchhoff Die verdammte Marie Felix Mitterer Stigma Marco Antonio de la Parra Solo für Carlos und Sigmund Bernard-Marie Koltès In der Einsamkeit der Baumwollfelder Beiträge von Michael Fröhling, Ernst Grohotolsky, Peter Iden, Walter Methlagl, Marco Antonio de la Parra und Michael Raab Brian Friel: Vater und Söhne „Väter“, das ist die Generation liberaler Aristokraten des 19. Jahrhunderts, die das Elend der Leibeigenen sehen, aber zu radikalen Konsequenzen außerstande sind. Ihre „Söhne“, rebellische Studenten, die sich selbst Nihilisten nennen, stellen dagegen alles in Frage: „Die Welt muss neu geschaffen werden.“Brian Friel, der bedeutendste irische Dramatiker der Gegenwart, hat den Roman von I. Turgenjew zu einem Gesellschaftsstück umgearbeitet, das zeigt, wie über alle Zeiten der Generationskonflikt aktuell geblieben ist. Christopher Hampton: Gefährliche Liebschaften Den berühmten Briefroman von Choderlos de Laclos, der ein grelles Sittenbild der mondänen Gesellschaft des Ancien régime gezeichnet hat, ist von Christopher Hampton in ein brillantes Konversationsstück verwandelt worden. Von New York bis London, an der Royal Shakespear Company, wurde das Stück mit überwältigendem Erfolg gespielt und mit den begehrtesten Theaterpreisen ausgezeichnet. Bodo Kirchhoff: Die verdammte Marie Ein wenig erfolgreicher Dramatiker hat auf einem Empfang die Adresse einer Geldverleiherin aufgeschnappt. Dort wird er unfreiwilliger Zeuge einer Verhandlung; es geht um harte Politik, um ein Geschäft. Mit geliehenem Geld will die Stadt ein Bordellhochhaus bauen. Der junge Dramatiker, so scheint es, ist einer Skandalstory auf der Spur. Bernard-Marie Koltès: In der Einsamkeit der Baumwollfelder Dealer und Opfer, sie existieren gleichsam die Regeln des Warenverkehrs. Wer zuerst sagt, was er will, hat verloren. Die Waffen der beiden Männer sind Wörter, es entsteht ein kunstvoll verknotetes Sprachgeflecht voller Anspielungen und Doppelbödigkeiten. Felix Mitterer: Stigma Eine Passion nennt Mitterer die 17 Stationen seines Stückes. Die Bauernmagd Moi leidet aus verzweifelter Liebe zu Jesus dessen Passion nach. Die Dorfbewohner verehren sie als Heilige, sie kämpft bis zu ihrem Tod gegen die menschenverachtende und engstirnige Einstellung der klerikalen Gemeinde. Marco Antonio de la Parra: Solo für Carlos und Sigmund Carlos und Sigmund sind zwei Exhibitionisten wie aus dem Bilderbuch, die einander das streitig machen, das vornehmste Mädchengymnasium Santiagos. So scheint es jedenfalls. Aber ist Carlos wirklich ein Exhibitionist, oder ist er ein Spitzel, der Sigmund aushorchen soll und für wen? Und warum können beide die Namen der Minister, die gerade das Gymnasium besuchen, auswendig hersagen? Oder sind sie nur einfach ganz normale Verrückte?

        Anglo–German relations during the Labour governments 1964–70

        NATO strategy, détente and European integration

        by Terry Macintyre

        Speaking at West Point in 1962, Dean Acheson observed that Britain had lost an empire and had still to find a new role. This book explains why, in the following years, as Britain's Labour government contemplated withdrawal from east of Suez, ministers came to see that Britain's future role would be as a force within Europe. To this end, and in order to gain entry into the European Economic Community, a close relationship with the Federal Republic of Germany would be essential. This account of Anglo-German relations during the 1960s reveals fascinating insights into how both governments reacted to a series of complex issues and why, despite differences which might have led to strains, a good understanding was maintained. Terry Macintyre's innovative approach brings together material covering NATO strategy, détente and European integration, making the volume fascinating and essential reading for students and enthusiasts of contemporary British and German political history. This book makes an important contribution to what we know about Cold War history, and should help to redefine some of the views about the relationship between Britain and Germany during the 1960s. ;

        On the uses of history in recent Irish writing

        by Bernhard Klein

        This book offers a critical reassessment of the uses of history in contemporary Irish literature and culture. It argues that in much recent Irish writing, history is approached not as the proverbial 'nightmare' from which Joyce's Stephen Dedalus tried to awake, but as a rich, imaginative resource. Drawing on recent debates in Irish literary and cultural criticism, On the uses of history in recent Irish writing explores the varied, creative, and often critically challenging forms of rewriting Ireland's troubled past in contemporary prose, drama and poetry. Individual chapters focus on literary treatments of the Tudor reconquest, the Famine, the Northern Irish Troubles and other key events in Irish history, highlighting in a series of close readings the unique forms of historical thought enabled by different literary forms and genres. Canonical works by authors such as Seamus Heaney, Derek Mahon, Tom Paulin, Brian Friel, Stewart Parker and Frank McGuinness are considered alongside lesser known writers and texts, placing each in their wider social, cultural and historical contexts. ;

        Reich mir die Hand

        Buch der Freundschaft und Versöhnung. Texte und Bilder

        by Simone Frieling, Simone Frieling

        Die Hand ist das erste und wichtigste Werkzeug des Menschen; ohne sie wäre kein Fortschritt möglich. Nicht nur bei der Arbeit ist die Hand unverzichtbar. Wir brauchen sie fast noch nötiger im sozialen Miteinander. Sie beschützt den Schwächeren, sie versöhnt die Feinde, und sie segnet die Gläubigen. Für den Künstler ist die Hand mehr als ein Werkzeug. Er benutzt sie und macht sie gleichzeitig zum Objekt seiner Kunst. Ein Buch zum Lesen und zum Betrachten, mit Texten von Rilke und Hesse, Shakespeare und Lichtenberg, Neruda und Ted Hughes, Lasker-Schüler und Bachmann sowie mit Bildern von Michelangelo und Dürer, Füssli und Runge, van Gogh, Max Ernst und vielen anderen.
