        Graham Swift

        by Daniel Lea, Susan Williams

        This book offers an accessible critical introduction to the work of Graham Swift, one of Britain's most significant contemporary authors. Through detailed readings of his novels and short stories from 'The Sweet Shop Owner' (1980) to 'The Light of Day' (2003), Daniel Lea lucidly addresses the key themes of history, loss, masculinity and ethical redemption, to present a fresh approach to Swift. This study proposes that one of the side-effects of modernity has been the destruction of traditional pathways of self and collective belief, leading to a loss of understanding between individuals about their duties to each other and to society. Swift's writing returns repeatedly to the question of what we can believe in when all the established markers of identity - family, community, gender, profession, history - have become destabilised. Lea suggests that Swift increasingly moves towards a notion of redemption through a lived ethical practice as the only means of finding solace in a world lacking a central symbolic authority. ;

        War Train

        by Donald Willerton

        To Mogi Franklin, it simply seemed like a better summer job than stocking supermarket shelves in Bluff, Utah. But the opportunity to help with his sister Jennifer's architectural assessment of the newly refurbished, once-grand-and-glorious hotel and restaurant in Las Vegas, New Mexico, turned out to be much more―the kind of brain-testing mystery he loved and excelled at, along with a heavy serving of adventure and danger.The mystery was more than seventy-five years old: the robbery of a local bank by two gunmen who'd walked out the door with thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills and then simply vanished. The link with the present-day hotel suddenly appeared in an unexpected find hidden in the “ton of junk” from an unknown attic room uncovered during the building's reconstruction. There among the old clothes, books, papers, and other remnants from the early days of World War II, Mogi finds a clue, then another and then more, leading far back in the hotel's unique history.As articles in a sensationalistic local newspaper seem to tie the clues together―and lead as well to false trails and blind alleys―Mogi digs deeper into the fascinating history of the Castañeda Hotel and its storied Harvey House restaurant to unravel the untold tale linking the robbery to a mother's love for the twin sons she was never able to give enough to. Dusty Bob

        A cultural history of dustmen, 1780–1870

        by Brian Maidment

        Why did dustmen exercise an extended hold over the imagination of many Regency and Victorian artists and writers, including George Cruikshank, Henry Mayhew, Charles Dickens as well as numerous little known dramatists, caricaturists, print makers, journalists and novelists? This book, the first study of the cultural representation of the dust trade, provides many varied answers to this question by showing the ways in which London dustmen were associated with ideas of contamination, dirt, noise, violence, wealth, consumerism and threat. Drawing on an extraordinary range of sources, including plays, novels, reportage and, especially, visual culture, Dusty Bob describes the ways in which dustmen were perceived and mythologised in the first seventy years of the nineteenth century. Although Dusty Bob centrally comprises a detailed and original piece of research of interest to scholars and advanced students of Victorian culture, it has been written with a broader readership in mind. ;

        Rethinking Norman Italy

        Studies in honour of Graham A. Loud

        by Joanna Drell, Paul Oldfield

        This volume on Norman Italy (southern Italy and Sicily, c. 1000-1200) honours and reflects the pioneering scholarship of Graham A. Loud. An international group of scholars reassesses and recasts the paradigm by which Norman Italy has been conventionally understood, addressing varied subjects across four key themes: historiographies, identities and communities, religion and Church, and conquest. The chapters revise and refine our understanding of Norman Italy in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, demonstrating that it was not just a parochial Norman or Mediterranean entity but also an integral player in the medieval mainstream.

        John and Yoni

        Twin brothers - two religions - two nations - one soul!

        by Mike Carmel

        John and Yoni - Twin brothers - two religions - two nations - one soul! Mike Carmel The result of an illicit tempestuous affair between a young psychology student and her married lecturer in 1979, twin brothers John and Yoni are involuntarily separated during their first month of life and raised in different adopting families. John grows up in Liverpool, England, in the Roman Catholic faith. Yoni grows up in Ra'anana, Israel, in the Jewish faith. At age 21, they meet up for the first time. Both are devout believers, each in his own religious conviction, and an interesting process of mutual discovery follows as their diverse cultural paths merge. What follows is a captivating, stimulating, inquisitive, amusing, and occasionally conflicting story, which often verges on the bizarre. Then, one of them tragically ends his life as a victim of a suicide bombing, and the other twin is left to endure the harsh process of reinterpreting his personal identity, once again alone in the world. Mike Carmel was born in 1956 in Liverpool, and studied economics at Liverpool University and at Brunel University in London. Although the author had an Anglican upbringing, in 1980 he decided to convert to Judaism. He consequently maintains a deep respect for both religions. Working in the hi-tech sector, Mike has been living in Israel for the past 25 years. He served in the Israel Defense Forces as a medic, and has also worked in several educational capacities in both countries. Mike married his Israeli wife in 1981, and they have 3 children. His daughter, to whom the book has been dedicated, was seriously injured  her army service by a suicide bomber in 2003.
