        The Moscow Factor: US Policy toward Sovereign Ukraine and the Kremlin

        24 February 2022 was not the beginning of Russia's war on Ukraine. Back in 2014, Russia illegally annexed Crimea from Ukraine, bolstered a separatist conflict in the Donbas region, and attacked Ukraine with units of its regular army and special forces. In each instance of Russian aggression, the U.S. response has often been criticized as inadequate, insufficient, or hesitant. The Moscow Factor: U.S. Policy toward Sovereign Ukraine and the Kremlin is a unique study that examines four key Ukraine-related policy decisions across two Republican and two Democratic U.S. administrations. Author Eugene M. Fishel asks whether, how, and under what circumstances Washington has considered Ukraine’s status as a sovereign nation in its decision-making regarding relations with Moscow. This study situates the stance of the United States toward Ukraine in the broader context of international relations. It fills an important lacuna in existing scholarship and policy discourse by focusing on the complex trilateral—rather than simply bilateral—dynamics among the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia, in 1991–2016. This book brings together for the first time documentary evidence and declassified materials dealing with policy deliberation, retrospective articles authored by former policymakers, and formal memoirs by erstwhile senior officials. The study is also supplemented by open-ended interviews with former and returning officials.

The play showcases strong female characters who excel at rebuking the outlandish courtship of various suitors. Shirley's comic setting, London's Hyde Park, offers ample opportunity for witty dialogue. This is the first critical edition of the play, including a wide-ranging introduction and extensive commentary and textual notes. Paying special attention to the culture of Caroline London and its stage, the volume unpicks Shirley's politics of courtship and consent while also underlining the play's dynamics of class and power. A detailed performance history traces productions from 1632, across the Restoration to the present day, including that of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1987. A textual history of the play's first quarto determines how it was printed and what relationship Hyde Park has to other texts by Shirley.

Deren zentrale Begriffe sowie die Beziehungen zwischen ihnen werden präzisiert und auf ihren Geltungs- und Anwendungsbereich hin überprüft; die Begriffe der Klasse, der Arbeitsteilung, des Klassenkampfes, der produktiven und unproduktiven Arbeit als klassenanalytisches Unterscheidungskriterium, der Ausbeutung, des Klassenbewußtseins u. a. Im dritten Teil schließlich (Kapitel 8-15) wendet er sein Konzept der Klassenstruktur auf die gegenwärtigen Entwicklungen in kapitalistischen (USA, Großbritannien, Frankreich, Japan) und staatssozialistischen Gesellschaften (UdSSR, Polen, CSSR, Jugoslawien) an. Eine differenzierte Untersuchung der »unterschiedlichen« sozioökonomischen, politischen und kulturellen Situation in den jeweiligen Ländern führt schließlich zu einer Kritik an der sogenannten Konvergenztheorie.
