Die total normalen Abenteuer von Odette Germaine

        by Franziska Lagemann, Kristina Kister

        Loquat

        Botany, Production and Uses

by Sisir Mitra, A Aytekin Polat, Manuel Agustí, Josep Armengol, Maria Luisa Badenes, Manuel Blasco, Julián Cuevas González, Vittorio Farina, Elisa González-Dominguez, Qigao Guo, Liang Guolu, Juan José Hueso, Yuanyuan Jiang, Francisco Legaz, Hailan Lin, Shoukai Lin, Dahe Lin, Shunquan Lin, Shiwei Ma, Belén Martínez-Alcántara, Amparo Martínez-Fuentes, Carlos Mesejo, Julia Morales, Ana Quiñones, Carmina Reig, Esteban Soler, Jincheng Wu, Bisha Wu, Xianghui Yang, Peng Ze, Lifen Zhang

Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) is a subtropical evergreen fruit tree indigenous to China. Records show it has been cultivated in China for over 2000 years. From this beginning, loquat has spread to more than 30 countries around the world. Grown in various regions of Asia, the Mediterranean and across the Americas, loquats suit both temperate and subtropical areas, sharing the same environmental conditions as citrus. Loquat is an increasingly commercial crop in some Asian and European countries with a good amount of international trade. Recent research has focused on improving crop yields and quality. Over 100 different varieties have been developed to meet both growers' and consumers' demands. These developments have contributed to a better understanding of the crop environment, plant growth and physiology of tree and fruit development with implications for both breeding and cultivation. This book is to be the first to provide a comprehensive coverage of the history, physiology, culture and marketing of loquat throughout the world.

        Representing Aztec Ritual

Performance, Text, and Image in the Work of Sahagun

        by Eloise Quinones Keber

Arriving in Mexico less than a decade after the Spanish conquest of 1521, the Franciscan missionary Bernardino de Sahagún not only laboured to supplant native religion with Christianity, he also gathered voluminous information on virtually every aspect of Aztec (Nahua) life in contact-period Mexico. His pioneering ethnographic work relied on interviews with Nahua elders and the assistance of a younger generation of bicultural, missionary-trained Nahuas. Sahagún's remarkably detailed descriptions of Aztec ceremonial life offer the most extensive account of a non-Western ritual system recorded before modern times. This book uses Sahagún's corpus as a starting point to focus on ritual performance, a key element in the functioning of the Aztec world. With topics ranging from the ritual use of sand and paper to the sacrifice of women, contributors explore how Aztec rites were represented in the images and texts of documents compiled under colonial rule and the implications of this European filter for our understanding of these ceremonies. Incorporating diverse disciplinary perspectives, contributors include Davíd Carrasco, Philip P. Arnold, Kay Read, H. B. Nicholson, Eduardo Matos Moctezuma, Guilhem Olivier, Doris Heyden, and Eloise Quiñones Keber.

        Fanning the Sacred Flame

Mesoamerican Studies in Honor of H.B. Nicholson

by Matthew A Boxt (Editor) , Brian D Dillon (Editor)

This book contains twenty-two original papers in tribute to H B "Nick" Nicholson, a pioneer of Mesoamerican research. His intellectual legacy is recognised by Mesoamerican archaeologists, art historians, ethnohistorians, and ethnographers -- students, colleagues, and friends who derived inspiration and encouragement from him throughout their own careers. Each chapter, which presents original research inspired by Nicholson, pays tribute to the teacher, writer, lecturer, friend, and mentor who became a legend within his own lifetime. Covering all of Mesoamerica across all time periods, contributors include Patricia R Anawalt, Alfredo López Austin, Anthony Aveni, Robert M Carmack, David C Grove, Richard D Hansen, Leonardo López Luján, Kevin Terraciano, and more. Eloise Qui-ones Keber provides a thorough biographical sketch, detailing Nicholson's academic and professional journey. Publication supported, in part, by The Patterson Foundation and several private donors.

        Rediscovering Northwest Denver

Its History, Its People, Its Landmarks

        by Ruth Eloise Wiberg

Now in its fifth printing, this book features a rare treasury of Victorian and turn-of-the-century buildings and the people who first came to Northwest Denver. The area's pure air, great views, and clean water were great attractions. The book describes the area's incorporated suburbs of the 1800's, the farms, the early amusement parks, all of which became part of Denver around the turn of the century. REDISCOVERING NORTHWEST DENVER is a chatty, enjoyable read that tells of the tycoons and entrepreneurs whose fine Victorian homes still dot the area, and of the immigrants from various European cultures who clung together for comfort in the face of prejudice. It includes maps, photographs, past and present street names, a bibliography, index, and suggested tours. Northwest Denver today is typified by traditions, beauty, and pride, all of which the author captures in this ever-popular book.

        The Purpose Handbook

        by Skinner

The goal of this book is simple: to help young people live with a sense of purpose. Part-manual, part-manifesto, this book is not a quick fix for happiness; it’s not a five-day plan promising a fast result. Instead, it’s a companion, a personal guide to navigating the reader’s own sense of purpose as it evolves throughout their life. Born on an East London council estate, having studied at Cambridge and Oxford, and now an author, teacher, and entrepreneur, Eloise Skinner - over-achieving, formerly purposeless millennial - is well-placed to write on this topic. Over seven years she undertook a personal purpose-finding project, and now, having crafted and tailored her own life to reflect her values, identity and sense of purpose, she shares the lessons she learned in this book.

      • Forensic Anthropology and Violations of International Humanitarian Law (The Case of the Former Yugoslavia)

(El caso de la antigua Yugoslavia)

        by Edixon Quiñones Reyes

In 1989, Slobodan Milosevic, president of the Yugoslav Communist League, implemented a constitutional reform in which he deprived the republic of Montenegro and the autonomous provinces of Kosovo and Vojvodina of the vote in the confederation's Congress; in response, the republics of Slovenia and Croatia declared independence in 1991, followed by Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1992; in the same year, in the autonomous province of Kosovo, Kosovar Albanians proclaimed independence and formed a parallel government. Seeking to maintain territorial control by force, Milosevic launched war campaigns against Slovenia and Croatia in 1991, Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1992 and Kosovo in 1996, in which violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) were committed. In order to prosecute those responsible for violations of IHL in Yugoslavia, the UN established the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in 1993. As part of the Tribunal's investigations, forensic anthropology played a key role in the collection of much of the evidence that was used to prosecute those involved. This book recounts the dissolution of the Yugoslav confederation; it gives an account of the origin and competencies of the ICTY and presents a synthesis of the forensic anthropological work carried out between 1996 and 2002, emphasizing three forensic operations in which the author participated in 2001.
