Only a once wanted underground activist, who later operated as a senior ex-Mossad agent, could have imagined this tantalizing plot. A group of European scientists and retired military personnel believe that western democracies and the United Nations are incapable of facing aggressive dictatorships. None of the imposed "sanctions" seem to impress the tyrants. The group members are horrified with the notion of a devastating nuclear disaster in a matter of two or three years that would claim the lives of hundreds of millions. They decide to take preventive action, and contend with this threat employing unusual and original methods, without the use of force or violence, propaganda or incitement, and yet with no less effective results. The group’s leader is a woman (a history professor at the Sorbonne in Paris), a retired admiral, a scientist and an ex-commando officer – all British. Professionals from various European countries join them in their cause, and together they reach amazing levels of technological sophistication though have to overcome unforeseen problems – or else the entire project would be jeopardized. David Shomron was born in Istanbul, where his parents had found refuge during the Communist Revolution in Russia, and immigrated with them in 1934 to Israel (then Palestine). The author has invested ten years in the underground movements before the State of Israel was established, and later served as a high ranking officer in the Mossad during more than twenty years. Subsequently, he headed for 13 Years a civilian security company as the C.E.O. of "BRINKS Israel Ltd.". In his 90's, David Shomron is a much sought-after lecturer on the time of the British Mandate. He has published four books – two on his life as an underground operator, and two novels – and continues to write to this day. David, now remarried, lives with his wife in Jerusalem. Simulating the marvellous presents important new research on Surrealism and the culture from which it arose. Offering fresh interpretations of Surrealist art and literature based around the theme of simulation, the book shows, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, that the notion of simulation arose in a number of discrete contexts, in relation to hysteria and war neuroses; more broadly it shadows the emergence of our concept of 'the unconscious'. Acknowledging simulation's relevance to Surrealism, this book argues, radically alters our understanding of the Surrealists' project and the terms in which one gauges its success or failure. It leads one to question the naïve assumption that automatic writing or drawing represent an authentic outpouring of the unconscious and gives renewed significance to a figure such as Salvador Dalí who embraced simulation and made it the basis of his art and aesthetic. Resonances are also explored with postmodern theory and art practice, around the themes of simulation and the simulacrum.It also points to one of the ways in which Surrealism chimes with a core preoccupation of contemporary art and theory. Written accessibly, and ranging across many of the core ideas of Surrealism, David Lomas balances coverage of both Surrealist art and literature, looking at such figures as Dalì, Eluard, Masson, Desnos, Brouillet, Picasso, Tanning and Janet, as well as Glenn Brown, Douglas Gordon and Sarah Lucas. This is the first introduction of its kind to an important cross-section of postcolonial African filmmakers from the 1950s to the present. Building on previous critical work in the field, this volume will bring together ideas from a range of disciplines - film studies, African cultural studies, and, in particular, postcolonial studies - in order to combine the in-depth analysis of individual films and bodies of work by individual directors with a sustained interrogation of these films in relation to important theoretical concepts. Structurally, the book is straightforward, though the aim is to incorporate diversity and complexity of approach within the overall simplicity of format. Chapters provide both an overview of the director's output to date, and the necessary background - personal or national, cultural or political - to enable readers to achieve a better understanding of the director's choice of subject matter, aesthetic or formal strategies, or ideological stance. They also offer a particular reading of one or more films, in which the authors aim to situate African cinema in relation to important critical and theoretical debates. This book thus constitutes a new departure in African film studies, recognising the maturity of the field, and the need for complex yet accessible approaches to it, which move beyond the purely descriptive while refusing to get bogged down in theoretical jargon. Consequently, the volume should be of interest not only to specialists but also to the general reader.
