Monarchy and visual culture in colonial Indonesia

Winner of the ASAA mid-career book prize in Asian Studies 2020 and joint winner of the 2020 Royal Studies Journal Book Prize Photographic subjects examines photography at royal celebrations during the reign of Queens Wilhelmina (1898-1948) and Juliana (1948-80), a period spanning the zenith and fall of Dutch rule in Indonesia. It is the first monograph in English on the Dutch monarchy and the Netherlands' modern empire in the age of mass and amateur photography. Photographs forged imperial networks, negotiated relations of recognition and subjecthood between Indonesians and Dutch authorities, and informed cultural modes of citizenship at a time of accelerated colonial expansion and major social change in the East Indies/Indonesia. This book advances methods in the uses of photographs for social and cultural history and provides a new interpretation of Queens Wilhelmina and Juliana as imperial monarchs.

The superfamily Chalcidoidea (the jewel wasps) are part of the insect order Hymenoptera. The superfamily comprises more than 27,000 known species, with an estimated total diversity of more than 500,000 species, meaning that the vast majority have yet to be discovered and described. Most of the species are parasitoids, attacking the egg, larval stage or pupal stage of their host, though many other life cycles are known including gall associates and fig pollinators. This landmark volume has been co-authored by world authorities on the systematics and biology of chalcidoid wasps. It provides an introduction to the superfamily, a review of chalcidoid morphology, an overview of the fossil record, a phylogenetic framework for the revised classification of the superfamily, an identification key for the 50 recognized families, and detailed treatments of the individual families. The book consolidates much recent research on the phylogenomics of Chalcidoidea and the fossil record. This research has resulted in substantial changes to their classification, and in a review of all families, the new family groups are presented to the general scientific public for the first time. The book is an historic milestone, presenting a reclassification of the superfamily and a synthesis of knowledge on all aspects of Chalcidoidea that will serve for generations to come. Individual chapters clarify the limits of families and subfamilies based on contemporary phylogenetic studies. These chapters provide for each family: diagnostic features and extensively illustrated details of their specialized morphology, summaries of their distribution and worldwide diversity, a history of their classification history and major workers, phylogenetic relationships, natural history, use in biological control and economic impact, fossil history, and fully illustrated identification keys to subfamilies or in some cases to genera. Additional chapters present best practices for collecting, rearing from hosts, and preservation, review digital resources currently available, explore the diversity of their natural history and their human impacts, such as their use and importance to biological and natural control of pest arthropods. Chapters by worldwide authorities explore the enormous biological diversity of chalcidoid wasps including consequences of their almost unbelievable miniaturization (the most extreme known in insects), relationships with endosymbionts, special aspects of genetics, genomics, evolutionary biology and development, and brief accounts of the most significant chalcidoid researchers that have passed. For many years to come this important book will serve the needs of hymenopterists and professional entomologists, taxonomists and systematists, entomologists working on parasitic wasps as biological control agents, and ecologists working on parasite-host interactions.

Love and anti-Judaism is a new examination of medieval romance for the questions it poses of the most significant events in Christian history. Providing new readings of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Orfeo, Sir Gowther and Sir Amadace, the book argues that romance explores depictions of love-and the sacrifices it may necessitate-in the Hebrew Bible, especially where they do not easily fit into interpretations asserting that this history must prefigure Christ and the crucifixion. An examination of anti-Judaism as a discourse of violence and desire that could be turned inwardly to expose the irresolution in Christianity, this book will provoke new investigations into the religious crises of medieval romance.

1970 erschien Arno Schmidts lang erwartetes Hauptwerk Zettel’s Traum. Leser staunten – das Buch hatte über 1300 Seiten im DIN-A3-Format, wog 10 Kilo und war eine Reproduktion von Schmidts Schreibmaschinen-Skript mit handschriftlichen Korrekturen und Einfügungen. Eine unorthodoxe Zeichensetzung und die Abkehr von allen Rechtschreibregeln verstärkten den Eindruck, dass Zettel’s Traum ein unlesbares Buch sei. Trotzdem (oder gerade deswegen) wurde es bald ein Kultbuch und verkaufte sich in fünfzig Jahren etwa 25.000 Mal. Wie viele dieser Exemplare tatsächlich gelesen worden sind, weiß freilich niemand. Das Lesebuch zu Arno Schmidts Zettel's Traum stellt einzelne Szenen aus dem großen Werk zusammen, das halb Roman, halb literarischer Essay zu Werk und Leben Edgar Allan Poes ist. In Gesprächen und »längeren Gedankenspielen« der Protagonisten wird die Vielfalt der sprachlichen Töne von Zettel’s Traum sichtbar. Es geht um gegenseitige Zuneigungen und wechselseitige Spannungen, um verräterische Träume und unterdrückte Wünsche. Um dem Erstleser den Einstieg zu erleichtern, wurden die Aufteilung in drei Spalten und die zahllosen Marginalien bei dieser Auswahl weggelassen. Sie versammelt Kostproben für neugierige Leser, die sich an das Original bislang nicht herangetraut haben.
