        Against the Grain

        Agri-Environmental Reform In the United States and European Union

        by Clive Potter

        Agricultural policy has long been regarded as a driving force for rural environmental change in industrial countries. While the causes of recent habitat loss, landscape degradation, soil erosion and water pollution in the EU and US are undoubtedly complex, the most convincing explanations are still ones that are strongly policy driven. By the mid-1980s, environmentalists had come to the conclusion that a major change to farm support in favour of the environment was required if the environmental problems of modern agriculture were to be tackled at source.Against the Grain tells the story of the long campaign for agri-environmental reform which followed. The central argument of this timely book is that in order to appreciate the significance of the reforms themselves, and to predict where they are going, it is necessary to understand why they occurred and how they were accomplished. The book offers a unique comparative analysis of the greening process in the US and EU, connecting policy outcomes to the political battles which produced them. It reflects on what has been achieved in each case and seeks to identify what countries can learn from each other. With its fresh analysis of what promises to be an increasingly central component of rural policy, this book is essential reading for analysts and policy-makers as well as an important text for senior undergraduates and postgraduates in rural geography, agricultural and environmental economics and environmental studies.

        Brand New Ancients / Brandneue Klassiker

        Lyrik

        by Johanna Wange, Kae Tempest

        Die antiken Götter von heute leben im Südosten Londons. Sie heißen Kevin und Jane, Mary und Brian, Thomas und Clive – zwei Familien in benachbarten Häusern, Eheleute, die einander betrügen, Halbbrüder, die nichts voneinander wissen. Ihre Nöte, Hoffnungen und Enttäuschungen bringt Kae Tempest in dem preisgekrönten Langgedicht Brand New Ancients / Brandneue Klassiker zu Gehör. In den kleinen, prekären Leben findet Tempest die Kraft der alten Mythen wieder. Dem Zynismus und der Gleichgültigkeit der kapitalistischen Gesellschaft setzt Tempest Humanismus und Einfühlungsvermögen entgegen und die Wucht der literarischen Sprache.

        Modernism and empire

        Writing and British coloniality, 1890–1940

        by Howard Booth, Nigel Rigby

        This is the first book to explore the relationship between literary modernism and the British Empire. Contributors look at works from the traditional modernist canon as well as extending the range of work addresses - particularly emphasising texts from the Empire. A key issue raised is whether modernism sprang from a crisis in the colonial system, which it sought to extend, or whether the modern movement was a more sophisticated form of cultural imperialism. The chapters in Modernism and empire show the importance of empire to modernism. Patrick Williams theorises modernism and empire; Rod Edmond discusses theories of degeneration in imperial and modernist discourse; Helen Carr examines Imagism and empire; Elleke Boehmer compares Leonard Woolf and Yeats; Janet Montefiore writes on Kipling and Orwell, C.L. Innes explores Yeats, Joyce and their implied audiences; Maire Ni Fhlathuin writes on Patrick Pearse and modernism; John Nash considers newspapers, imperialism and Ulysses; Howard J. Booth addresses D.H. Lawrence and otherness; Nigel Rigby discusses Sylvia Townsend Warner and sexuality in the Pacific; Mark Williams explores Mansfield and Maori culture; Abdulrazak Gurnah looks at Karen Blixen, Elspeth Huxley and settler writing; and Bill Ashcroft and John Salter take an inter-disciplinary approach to Australia and 'Modernism's Empire'. ;

        Animal Abuse

        Helping Animals and People

        by Catherine Tiplady

        Animal abuse affects everybody working in animal-related industries, and constitutes a significant part of veterinary caseloads and animal shelter work. Based on the author's experience as a shelter worker and veterinarian, this book provides advice and assistance to those working with animal abuse. Beginning with definitions and types of abuse that occur worldwide in domestic, industry, leisure and cultural settings, the book goes on to detail current topics of debate such as foie gras production, pedigree dog breeding, links between animal abuse and domestic violence, and the fascinating subject of veterinary forensics - the scientific investigation of instances of animal abuse. The book's practical focus is developed through interviews with people in a variety of affected roles, international case studies, and discussion of the difficulties that arise; how they can be dealt with and the mental health impacts they can have on those involved. With contributions from world-renowned experts including Phil Arkow and David Bailey, and an introduction by Clive Phillips, Animal Abuse: Helping Animals and People provides practical advice and insights into issues surrounding this emotional subject.

        Anti-Europäer

        Breivik, Dugin, al-Suri & Co.

        by Claus Leggewie

        Die Griechenland-Krise und die mangelnde Handlungsbereitschaft im Umgang mit den Flüchtlingen haben nachdrücklich gezeigt, dass es um die Europäische Union derzeit nicht allzu gut bestellt ist. Parallel zu diesen internen Problemen mehren sich Stimmen unterschiedlichster Provenienz, die Europa attackieren und europäische Werte infrage stellen: Identitäre wie der Massenmörder Anders Breivik, Dschihadisten wie der Syrer Abu Musab al-Suri, »Eurasier« wie der Putin-Berater Alexander Dugin, illiberale Demokraten à la Viktor Orbán, aber auch einige Linkspopulisten am Rande von Syriza und Podemos. Claus Leggewie porträtiert Wortführer und politische Unternehmer, die unabhängig voneinander, aber oft in ungewollter Komplizenschaft die »Festung Europa« schleifen wollen. Er erklärt, woher sie kommen, welche Pläne sie verfolgen und welche Mächtigen sie unterstützen. Und er fordert dazu auf, sich endlich politisch mit ihnen auseinanderzusetzen.
