        Claude Simon

        Adventures in Words

        by Alastair B. Duncan

        Introducing novels by the Nobel Prize for Literature author, Claude Simon, this text gives emphasis to peaks in his literary achievement: "The Flanders Road" (1960), "The Georgics" (1981) and "The Acacia" (1989). Alastair Duncan traces the development and recurrence of major themes, such as war, time and memory, and the constantly renewed inventiveness of Simon's manner. Duncan illustrates and comments on the various critical approaches which have been made to the novels over the years, from phenomenological interpretations, through structuralism to the autobiographical and psychobiographical approaches of the 1980s and 1990s. The text includes a chapter on Simon's most recent works ("Le Jardin des Plantes" 1997 and "Le Tramway" 2001).

        Corona Chaos. Confessions from a pharmacist

        by Simon Krivec

        More than two years of pandemic is more than two years of corona clutter. Only a staggering level of helpfulness, improvisation and flexibility prevented the healthcare system from collapsing completely. In this highly topical book, pharmacist Simon Krivec tells of his incredible experiences and the stormy ups and downs of pandemic madness, missing masks and disinfectants, and the feeling of having been totally abandoned by a helpless state. We learn, for instance, of the short-term procurement of large quantities of ethanol and the transportation of the highly flammable substance, and just what lured the author – and 71,400 euros in cash – to visit the port of Neuss at night.

        Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex

        by Jeff Wallace, Ruth Evans, John Whale

        Acknowledged by many feminists as the single most important theoretical work of the twentieth century, Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex (1949) nevertheless occupies an anomalous place in the feminist 'canon'. Yet it has had an undeniable impact, not only on the development of critiques of sexual politics but on twentieth-century western thinking about the concept of 'woman' in general. This collection of six new essays by scholars from the disciplines of French, English literature, history, cultural criticism, feminist theory and philosophy makes a valuable contribution to the task of re-reading and reassessing this enormously influential text for a new generation of feminist readers, and also for cultural theorists, for whom the question of 'the feminine' is at the centre of key debates in philosophy and postmodernity. The contributors provide a significantly new rethinking of the place of The Second Sex in cultural history and of women and representation, the role of 'fictions' and the problem of ethical agency in the work of the leading intellectual woman of this age. ;

        T wie Tessa - Plötzlich Geheimagentin (Band 1)

        by Frauke Scheunemann

        T for Tessa - Suddenly Secret Agent (Vol. 1) T for Tessa and top secret! The first volume of a new secret agent series combines coolness, a touch of romance, and a ton of humor as Tessa trips into her first detective case. Together with her Mongolian gerbil Hector, a talking sidekick, Tessa soon turns into a real top-notch agent. Of course, she still retains her chaotic nature, which makes for a lot of situation comedy.   Extremely shy and clumsy – it’s no wonder Tessa would rather be someone else. Like a member of Gimme Four, for example, the super famous girl group at her school. Then the unimaginable happens: Tessa passes the audition and makes it into the band! But it’s not exactly what she thought it would be. The rehearsals are disrupted by sketchy fans, wild chases at night, and ruthless mafiosi. And Tessa’s new band mates seem to have other hobbies besides music. Or how else would you explain the weapons in the instrument cases?

        T wie Tessa - Codewort Lotusblüte (Band 2)

        by Frauke Scheunemann

        T for Tessa - Codeword Lotus Flower (Vol. 2) From Hamburg Harbour to Rotterdam - Tessa topsecret!Shooting training, karate, heart palpitations and band rehearsals - Tessa Neumann's comfortable life has finally come to an end since she "accidentally" became an agent of the internationally operating secret service R.I.N.G. Now she's out to put a stop to the masterminds of organized crime.And it’s Tessa's first mission to be involved from the very beginning! Quite stressful but usually absolutely okay, if not now of all times Timo Erhardt, the crush of her sleepless nights, would show interest in her. How can fate throw such lousy timing at her? Actually, Tessa would really like to take a break, but evil never sleeps, as we all know. The scene of the crime in this mission is the port of Hamburg. Here, the customs investigation has uncovered 16 tons of cocaine in the container of a cargo ship. A remarkable catch! But one thing soon becomes clear to Tessa, her band mates and the Mongolian gerbil Hector: the real culprits are not in Hamburg, but in Rotterdam. There a cat-and-mouse game begins, in which the girls have to show what they are made of. With their combined forces, they manage to lure the criminals into a trap so that the Dutch police can arrest them. But mousy Hector discovers that drugs are not the only commodity being smuggled across Europe via Rotterdam: In fact, one of the smugglers is also dealing in exotic animals, animals listed as Endangered Species, so they can't be imported. But be assured, Hector wouldn't be Hector if he didn't do everything he could to save the animals!

        Eine Dichtung für den Rundfunk. Mit einem Nachwort von Hans Mayer

        by Peter Huchel, Hans Mayer

        Peter Huchel (1903-1981), einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Lyriker nach 1945. Lange Jahre Chefredakteur der Zeitschrift »Sinn und Form«, 1962 aus ideologischen Gründen zum Rücktritt gezwungen, durfte er nach weiterhin anhaltenden Auseinandersetzungen mit dem DDR-Regime 1971 ausreisen. Der Wissenschaftler, Kulturkritiker und Schriftsteller wurde am 19. März 1907 in Köln geboren. Er studierte Jura, Geschichte und Philosophie in Köln, Bonn und Berlin. Als Jude verfolgt, war er von 1933 bis 1945 in der Emigration in Frankreich und in der Schweiz. Von 1948 bis 1963 lehrte er Geschichte der Nationalliteraturen an der Universität Leipzig. Zwischen 1965 und 1973 war er Professor für Deutsche Sprache und Literatur an der Technischen Universität Hannover. Danach lebte er als Honorarprofessor in Tübingen. 1935, im Exil, begann er mit den Vorarbeiten für sein großes Werk über Georg Büchner; ohne Zuspruch von Carl J. Burckhardt wäre das Opus magnum nicht beendet worden. 1972 erschien eine Neuausgabe im Suhrkamp Verlag. 40 Titel von ihm sind seitdem in »seinem« Verlag publiziert worden, darunter Bücher über Goethe und Brecht, Thomas Mann und Richard Wagner; der letzte in diesen Tagen: »Erinnerungen an Willy Brandt«. Bundeskanzler Schröder drückte darüber brieflich noch seine Hochachtung aus. Hans Mayer war ein Lehrer für uns Deutsche. Ein Wissenschaftler, der mitten im Stalinismus Autoren wie Kafka, Proust, Joyce und Bloch verteidigte, der, wo immer in der Welt er lehrte, Literatur befragte, ob sie geeignet sei, Humanität zu befördern. Ein Gelehrter zwischen den Fronten, dessen wichtigste Werke nicht zufällig den Unbotmäßigen und »Außenseitern« gelten. Seine Erinnerungen waren Erinnerungen eines »Deutschen auf Widerruf«. Die Beschwörungen eines anderen Deutschland bereiteten neuen Kräften wie Uwe Johnson den Weg. Hans Mayer ist Ehrenbürger der Städte Köln und Leipzig, Ehrendoktor der Universitäten in Brüssel, Wisconsin und Leipzig, Ehrenprofessor der Universität Peking, Träger des »Großen Verdienstkreuzes mit Stern und Schulterband der Bundesrepublik Deutschland«. Hans Mayer, Nestor der deutschen Literaturwissenschaft, starb am Sonnabend, dem 19. Mai 2001, im Alter von 94 Jahren in Tübingen.
