Cartageo’s handicraftsmen has been recreating antique prints whose accuracy to the originals results in exquisite and prestigious artistic creations. These beautiful and interesting subjects are important for the historical and geographical information they offer. They embrace various historical periods in which man’s evolution has enabled him to widen his horizons by learning more and more about the surrounding environment, its representation and measurements. These works also have a remarkable aesthetic effect making them perfect for homes and offices where they may be admired and be the subject of interesting conversation. The accuracy in the production of these works is not simply a slogan. The handmade realization employs the same techniques used in the past for printing and mounting. The printing of the subjects employs the use of copper plates upon a manual press thus producing one of the main characteristics of our work: engraving. The final result allows you to feel with your fingers the texture of the material, follow the lines, writings and figures that make up the actual work. The high quality product is made even more precious because of the choice in the paper we use: it is 100% pure cotton paper, (the same that was used centuries ago), and it is mounted on pure cotton canvas. This process allows the works to be folded easily and thus can be better preserved. The mounting on canvas is followed by an aging process which using only natural substances. The “trimming” you find on the borders is the last touch giving at the maps the antique look. Upon request the works can be enriched even more by watercoloring done by masters in the field. Each subject is accompanied by a thorough historical background that facilitates the reading of the map as well as transmiting historical and cultural aspects of a given context. Cartageo’s catalog includes approximately 180 subjects spanning from the 16th to the 18th centuries, as well as some examples nearer our own times. It includes, however, even more antique subjects like the “Tavola Peutingeriana” dating back to Roman times, circa 350A.D.. The stylistic differences varying from one epoch to the next are clear: one of the most evident is the tendency to represent a given subject with greater precision, or more realistic precision, thanks to the progress made over the centuries in the developing and perfecting of instruments of measure. Other differences can be found in the decorations adorning the maps or other subjects. From 1500 until 1700 there was in fact an evolution resulting in the progressive inclusion of scroll ornaments and ornamental figures in order to embellish the works and give them a stronger visual effect. After the 19th century there was instead a reversal of this trend: a return to the essentials and a refinement in technique. There are not only “temporal” or stylistic differences, but geographic ones depending on the depicted subject (world maps or planispheres, continents, countries, regions, cities, etc.). I soggetti, belli ed interessanti dal punto di vista storico e geografico, abbracciano gran parte dei secoli della storia dell’uomo ed illustrano l’evolversi delle sue conoscenze nell’ambito della descrizione e della misura del mondo in cui vive. Si tratta di pezzi, inoltre, di notevole impatto estetico, da apporre nelle case e negli uffici come veri e propri oggetti di arredamento, in grado di farsi ammirare e di poter fornire stimolanti spunti di conversazione. La fedeltà ai soggetti non è un semplice slogan, ma una precisa scelta di stile: la realizzazione delle opere segue dunque le medesime tecniche del passato, sia per quel che riguarda le fasi di stampa e montaggio dei pezzi, che per quanto concerne i materiali utilizzati. La stampa dei soggetti viene eseguita mediante l’utilizzo di lastre di rame e di un torchio a mano che conferisce ai prodotti una dello loro principali ed inconfondibili qualità: l’incisione. Queste opere risulteranno sensibili al tatto, e permetteranno alle vostre dita di seguirne le linee, le trame e le figure che le compongono. Il tutto è impreziosito dall’uso di carta di puro cotone quale era quella di allora, ed è unito al montaggio su tela di puro cotone, anch’essa nel pieno rispetto del modus operandi del passato, che permette ai soggetti una facile ripiegatura, trasportabilità ed una migliore conservazione (montaggio con geometria a “stacchi”). Il montaggio su tela è accompagnato dal processo d’invecchiamento, ottenuto mediante l’impiego di sostanze vegetali. La “rifilatura” finale completa esteticamente il processo. Resta poi, a seconda delle richieste, la possibilità di addolcire il prodotto monocolore così ottenuto tramite la coloritura ad acquerello, realizzata rigorosamente a mano da maestri del settore. Ogni soggetto, infine, è corredato da un’esauriente memoria storica che agevola la lettura della mappa e la pone nel contesto storico-culturale che le appartiene, non mancando peraltro di fornire argomentazioni interessanti e spunti curiosi. Il catalogo di Cartageo annovera circa 180 soggetti, ed abbraccia secoli quali il 1500, il 1600, il 1700, fino a giungere ad epoche più vicine alla nostra. Non mancano tuttavia soggetti più antichi, ne fa fede la “Tavola Peutingeriana” di epoca romana, risalente al 350 dopo Cristo. Le differenze stilistiche esistenti tra le varie epoche sono evidenti: la caratteristica che più salta agli occhi è la tendenza ad una sempre maggiore precisione del rappresentato (nel senso di corrispondenza al vero) col procedere del tempo, cosa del resto ovvia visto l’inesorabile avanzare del progresso che ha permesso di usufruire di strumenti di misura sempre più precisi. Differenze sono ravvisabili anche nelle decorazioni: dal 1500 fino al 1700 si ha, in generale, una evoluzione che ha portato ad un progressivo aumento delle decorazioni a livello dei cartigli e delle figure ornamentali, in una sempre più spinta ricerca dell’effetto estetico. A partire dal XIX secolo si è assistito, invece, al processo inverso: un ritorno sempre più pronunciato all’essenzialità, parallelamente ad una maggior finezza tecnica. Non si hanno però soltanto differenze “temporali” e stilistiche: questi soggetti presentano anche differenze di carattere geografico, a seconda dell’area che rappresentano (planisferi, continenti, nazioni, regioni, città ecc.). Né mancano altre tipologie di soggetti, quali le vedute di città e le raffigurazioni di scene di passata mondanità o di carattere religioso.
