        Carol Reed

        by Peter William Evans, Brian McFarlane, Neil Sinyard

        Carol Reed is one of the truly outstanding directors of British cinema, and one whose work is long overdue for reconsideration. This major study ranges over Reed's entire career, combining observation of general trends and patterns with detailed analysis of twenty films, both acknowledged masterpieces and lesser-known works. Evans avoids a simplistic auteurist approach, placing the films in their autobiographical, socio-political and cultural contexts and relating these to the analysis of Reed's art. The critical approach combines psychoanalysis, gender theory, and the analysis of form. Archival research is also relied on to clarify Reed's relations with his creative team, financial backers and others. Films examined include Bank Holiday, A Girl Must Live, Odd Man Out, The Fallen Idol, The Third Man, Night Train to Munich, The Way Ahead, Outcast of the Islands, Trapeze and Oliver!. ;

        Martin Chuzzlewit

        Mit Illustrationen von Phiz

        by Charles Dickens, Phiz

        Charles Dickens wurde am 7. Februar 1812 in Landport, England als zweites von acht Kindern geboren. Er wuchs in ärmlichen Familienverhältnissen auf und lernte schon früh die Erfahrung von Hunger und Not kennen, als der Vater in Schuldhaft kam. Charles mußte für die Versorgung der Familie aufkommen und arbeitete, wie zahlreiche andere Kinder auch, in einer Lagerhalle und als Hilfsarbeiter in einer Fabrik. Nachdem die widrigsten Zeiten überstanden waren, setzte er mit vierzehn Jahren seinen Schulbesuch fort und arbeitete später als Schreiber bei einem Rechtsanwalt und als Zeitungsjournalist. Mit seiner Skizzensammlung Sketches by Boz (1836) und The Pickwick Papers (1837) hatte Dickens überraschend Erfolg und wurde schnell zu einem der bekanntesten Autoren Englands. Später erlangte er auch große Bekanntheit in den USA. Dickens erste Romane erschienen alle als Fortsetzungsgeschichten in Zeitungen, so auch eines seiner bekanntesten Werke, Oliver Twist (1837). Dickens war Herausgeber der Tageszeitung Daily News und der Zeitschrift Household Words. Neben der Schriftstellerei verdiente er sich sein Geld mit Lese- und Vortragsreisen in England und den USA. A Christmas Carol (1843), gehörte dabei zu seinem festen Leseprogramm. Charles Dickens starb am 9. Juni 1870 in Kent.

        Die politische Ontologie Martin Heideggers

        by Pierre Bourdieu, Bernd Schwibs

        Über das Verhältnis Martin Heideggers und dessen Philosophie zum Nationalsozialismus ist viel diskutiert worden. Das vorliegende Buch von Pierre Bourdieu ist ein Beitrag zu dieser Debatte – jedoch nicht durch den Nachweis philosophieexterner Bezüge zwischen NS-Politik und den Handlungen dieses Philosophen. Bourdieu geht es vielmehr um die Rekonstruktion sowohl der verschiedenen Varianten der Weltanschauung der »konservativen Revolutionäre« als auch der intellektuellen und sozialen Logik des philosophischen Feldes, auf dem sich die Überführung der völkischen Gesinnung in die existentielle Philosophie vollzieht. Erst dann kann man die politische Ontologie Martin Heideggers verstehen und bewerten.

        The Winter's Tale

        by Judith Dunbar, Jim Bulman, Carol Chillington Rutter

        This illuminating study of The Winter's Tale in performance in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries contributes to understanding the growth during that time of high critical esteem forwhat is now one of Shakespeare's frequently performed plays. Writing about performance as a richly collaborative living art, the author learns from and gives voice to the work of actors, directors, designers and other theatre professionals whose labor and interpretive discoveries have made it possible for audiences to experience the play's multiple potentialities in the theatre. She does this in part by citing from her interviews with directors like Trevor Nunn and Peter Hall and with actors engaged in some of the most significant twentieth-century productions of The Winter's Tale. Dunbar connects her scholarly research, including fresh use of materials in theatrical archives, to her direct experience of those productions she has able to see in performance and, at times, to see develop in rehearsal. Her in-depth analysis of selected significant twentieth-century productions, including cross-cultural productions of The Winter's Tale by the Royal Dramatic Theatre of Sweden (directed by Ingmar Bergman), and the Maly Drama Theatre of Europe, in St. Petersburg (directed by Declan Donnellan), explores how theatre artists have approached the play's most crucial theatrical and interpretive challenges. The book's last chapter, by distinguishedtheatre scholar and performance critic Carol Chillington Rutter, contributes a richly layered and highly engaging comparative analysis of eight of the most important recent British productions of the play. Dunbar makes a significant contribution to understanding The Winter's Tale which will be of great interest to scholars, teachers, and students of Shakespeare, to theatre lovers, and to all involved in productions of the play. ;

        Martin Walser liest »Die Verteidigung der Kindheit«

        Tonband-Kassette. 45 Minuten

        by Martin Walser

        Die Verteidigung der Kindheit. Ein Liebesroman also. Da die Welt für große Liebe nicht eingerichtet ist, bringt eine solche Liebe den Liebenden nicht das, was man Glück nennt. Schon gar nicht, wenn diese Liebe die eines Sohnes zu seiner Mutter ist. Alfred Dorn wehrt sich gegen das Leben, weil es zum Tod führt, gegen das Erwachsensein. Erwachsen werden, das hieße zugeben, daß man nicht geworden ist, was man werden wollte. Er war ja fast ein Wunderkind. Diese Liebes-Geschichte hört auch nach dem Tod der Mutter nicht auf. Jetzt muß Alfred Dorn erst recht die Kindheit verteidigen gegen Gegenwart und Zukunft, er will alles so festhalten, wie es wirklich gewesen ist. Er will retten: Sätze, Träume, Tage, Jahre; alles, was das Inferno des 13. Februar 1945 in Dresden übriggelassen hat; und alles, was die Mutter noch berührt hat, wird zum Heiligtum. Und weil dieser Roman einer großen Liebe von 1929 bis 1987 in Deutschland spielt und von Dresden über Leipzig nach Berlin und nach Wiesbaden führt, wird er unwillkürlich auch ein deutsches Epos dieser Zeit.

        Tyrants of Sicily by Hugo Falcandus

        by Graham Loud, Thomas Wiedemann

        This book is our principal source for the history of the Kingdom of Sicily in the troubled years between the death of its founder, King Roger, in February 1154 and the spring of 1169. It covers the reign of Roger's son, King William I, known to later centuries as 'the Bad', and the minority of the latter's son, William II 'the Good'. The book illustrates the revival of classical learning during the twelfth-century renaissance. It presents a vivid and compelling picture of royal tyranny, rebellion and factional dispute at court. Sicily had historically been ruled by tyrants, and that the rule of the new Norman kings could be seen, for a variety of reasons, as a revival of that classical tyranny. A more balanced view of Sicilian history of the period 1153-1169 has been provided as an appendix to the translation in the section of the contemporary world chronicle ascribed to Archbishop Romuald II of Salerno, who died in April 1181. In particular the chronicle of Romuald enables us to see how the papal schism of 1159 and the simultaneous dispute between the German Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and the north Italian cities affected the destiny of the kingdom of Sicily. In contrast to the shadowy figure of Hugo Falcandus, the putative author of the principal narrative of mid-twelfth-century Sicilian history, Romuald II, Archbishop of Salerno 1153-1181, is well-documented.

        African Seed Enterprises

        Sowing the Seeds of Food Security

        by Edited by Paul Van Mele, J W Bentley, Robert G Guéi

        In most developing countries, good quality seed is hard to obtain and farmers struggle to save seed from one year to the next. Instead, they increasingly turn to public or private enterprises that multiply, store and distribute seed. African Seed Enterprises takes a people-centred look at the companies, public agencies and family farms that are taking on this role and making a difference to food security across Africa. Case studies are arranged by country, and each chapter includes a profile of the agricultural and policy environment that surrounds these enterprises and affects their development. Each case is unique and presents its own set of lessons, and as a whole, this wide range of experiences is a rich source of data and ideas for future enterprise, offering valuable insights for policy makers, academics and non-governmental organizations throughout the world.
