        Bertrand Tavernier

        by Lynn Anthony Higgins, Diana Holmes, Robert Ingram

        Bertrand Tavernier is widely recognized as the leading French filmmaker of his generation. Both a consummate artist and a controversial public figure, he is a passionate advocate for social causes and also a tireless defender of world cinema in general and the French cinematic heritage in particular. Lynn Higgins' book offers a guided tour through Tavernier's oeuvre, taking into account both its prodigious diversity and its unifying themes. It explores his use of genre and adaptation, his work with actors and his affection for characters, his treatment of France's colonial history, his explorations of the powers of art and the complexities of intergenerational relations, both among fictional characters and within French cinema history. This is the most comprehensive and up-to-date scholarly book about Tavernier. Original and lively, sophisticated and engaging, the book will appeal to anyone interested in film studies, gender studies, and French cultural studies including academics, students, cinema enthusiasts, and Tavernier fans. ;

        Bertrand Blier

        by Sue Harris

        The most complete study of Blier's work to date, Harris traces the director's career from the early 1960s until the present. Outlines the forms, themes and style which dominate in Blier's work, and challenges the many labels that have been used to describe both the corpus of films and the man himself. Provides an original and controversial discussion of Blier's alleged 'misogyny', and invites the reader to understand the scatological and corporeal aspects of Blier's filmmaking in terms of long-established traditions of popular dramatic culture. Brings to light the comic mechanisms underpinning Blier's films and identifies strategies which navigate through one of the most entertaining and disconcerting bodies of work of recent years. The first book on Blier published in English.

        Wittgenstein im Kontext der analytischen Philosophie

        by Peter M. S. Hacker, Peter M. S. Hacker, Joachim Schulte

        Von Wittgensteins Werk Philosophische Untersuchungen ausgehend, richtet Hacker den Blick zunächst zurück, um den Kontext der Entstehung dieser epochemachenden Schrift zu schildern, und anschließend nach vorn, um die Wirkung von Wittgensteins Werk zu erkünden. Der Rückblick beginnt mit der Zeit der Jahrhundertwende, den Schriften des deutschen Logikers Gottlob Frege einerseits und den Arbeiten der englischen Philosophen Bertrand Russell und G. E. Moore andererseits. Damit wird zugleich der für Wittgensteins Denken bestimmende geistesgeschichtliche Rahmen abgesteckt: die Welt der in Logik und Begriffsanalyse avanciertesten Denker der deutschen wie der britischen Kultur. Hackers vergleichende Betrachtung konzentriert sich sodann auf die Entwicklung des wissenschaftstheoretisch und logisch orientierten Wiener Kreises (Schlick, Carnap, Neurath u. a.) und der eher an erkenntnistheoretischen und psychologischen Themen interessierten Cambridge-Philosophie der Vorkriegszeit. Im Anschluß an eine darauf folgende mustergültige Darstellung der Philosophischen Untersuchungen zeichnet Hacker den Weg der neueren analytischen Philosophie nach und behandelt dabei Autoren wie Quine, Dummett und Davidson, die in der gegenwärtigen Diskussion den Ton angeben.

        8 BILLION REASONS POPULATION MATTERS

        The Defining Issue of the 21st Century

        by Valorie M. Allen

        The world is about to hit a population level of EIGHT BILLION people on one small planet. Through Allen’s analysis of the situation, the realization sets in that the fights by environmental and world aid groups are all for naught as every gain is soon overwhelmed by the pressures of more growth. Our planet's greatest threat is of too many people depleting the Earth's resources and contributing to climate change. Allen offers a thorough analysis of our environmental, social, political, and economic crises; then offers a treasure trove of solutions and success stories that we can all take to heart.

        Popular imperialism and the military, 1850-1950

        by John M. MacKenzie

        Colonial war played a vital part in transforming the reputation of the military and placing it on a standing equal to that of the navy. The book is concerned with the interactive culture of colonial warfare, with the representation of the military in popular media at home, and how these images affected attitudes towards war itself and wider intellectual and institutional forces. It sets out to relate the changing image of the military to these fundamental facts. For the dominant people they were an atavistic form of war, shorn of guilt by Social Darwinian and racial ideas, and rendered less dangerous by the increasing technological gap between Europe and the world. Attempts to justify and understand war were naturally important to dominant people, for the extension of imperial power was seldom a peaceful process. The entertainment value of war in the British imperial experience does seem to have taken new and more intensive forms from roughly the middle of the nineteenth century. Themes such as the delusive seduction of martial music, the sketch of the music hall song, powerful mythic texts of popular imperialism, and heroic myths of empire are discussed extensively. The first important British war correspondent was William Howard Russell (1820-1907) of The Times, in the Crimea. The 1870s saw a dramatic change in the representation of the officer in British battle painting. Up to that point it was the officer's courage, tactical wisdom and social prestige that were put on display.
