        Thinking towards humanity

        Themes from Norman Geras

        by David Aaronovitch, Stephen de Wijze, Ophelia Benson, Eve Gerrard, Gideon Calder

        How should we respond to the inhumanity that suffused the twentieth Century and continues in the present one? Has there been an adequate treatment of this issue by the political left? Questions such as these are treated in this, the first scholarly book to combine academic and blogging approaches to some of the major political issues of the day. It does this by focusing on the work of Norman Geras - Marxist, political philosopher and blogger - and developing the central themes of his work such as crimes against humanity, the Holocaust, Marxism, and the means/ends problem in politics. It contains contributions by famous political philosophers such as Michael Walzer, Hillel Steiner and David McLennan, and bloggers and journalists such as David Aaronovitch, Nick Cohen and Ophelia Benson. The book contains a unique response by Geras in which he draws together the various themes it covers. It will be of interest to all who are concerned with these pressing political issues of our time. The book will be particularly relevant for those with an academic or general interest in politics, philosophy, sociology, genocide studies, applied ethics, international relations and law. It will also be of interest to bloggers and all those who regard new technology as having significant implications for public debate on these issues. ;

        Kilroy was here

        Ein immerwährender Kalender

        by Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Kat Menschik

        Zum Lesen, Verwerfen, Mitschreiben und Selbstdichten. Mit einer kurzen Geschichte vom geheimnisvollen Leben Kilroys und einem Daumenkino von Kat Menschik. Zur Aufmunterung des Denkens: ein Dreizeiler für jeden Tag »Der schlichte Dreizeiler / entwaffnet die Ungeduld / durch seine Kürze.« Kilroys Dreizeiler reichen für ein ganzes Jahr. Obwohl das japanische Wort haiku soviel bedeutet wie »lustiger Vers«, können es die hier präsentierten Dreizeiler nicht mit dieser ehrwürdigen Tradition aufnehmen; denn Kilroy hält es mit dem einfachen Kreidestrich. Das Graffito zieht er dem Tweet, dem Blog und dem Chat vor. Man kann seine Dreizeiler also in die Tasche stecken. Sie handeln von allem, was der Fall ist, beispielsweise von einem Frosch oder von der Europäischen Zentralbank. Wem der zu einem jeden Jahrestag gebotene Dreizeiler aber nicht gefällt, der kann ihn einfach durchstreichen und einen anderen verfassen. Denn in Kilroys kleinem Buch gibt es nicht nur unter jedem Jahrestag Platz für Notizen, sondern auch genügend Freiraum für neue, selbsterfundene Dreizeiler. Eine kurze Geschichte Kilroys und wie er sich in jede FAZ-Ausgabe des Jahres 2014 zu schmuggeln verstand, lässt den »Immerwährenden« denn doch ein gutes Ende nehmen. Und sollte noch immer jemand an Kilroys Existenz zweifeln, so wird ihn Kat Menschiks Daumenkino davon überzeugen, dass er quicklebendig ist.

        Wie viele Köpfe Wissen produzieren

        by Cass R. Sunstein, Robin Celikates, Eva Engels

        Die Produktion und Verbreitung von Informationen und Wissen ist heute nicht mehr nur die Sache weniger hochspezialisierter Experten und exklusiver Kreise, sondern vielmehr ein kollektives Unternehmen. Viele Köpfe auf der ganzen Welt – Sachverständige wie Laien – arbeiten von heimischen Rechnern aus über Wikis, Blogs und Open-Source-Projekte gemeinsam am Wissenskorpus der Menschheit, der dann über das Internet fast jedermann zur Verfügung steht. Fluch oder Segen? Werden wir durch die Überflutung mit ungesicherten Informationen zu Schafen einer digitalen Herde, die einfach das glauben, was viele für richtig halten, und nicht, was wirklich richtig ist? Oder verwirklicht sich hier gerade eine Utopie: alles zu wissen, was jeder von uns weiß? Cass R. Sunstein exponiert sich in seinem neuen Buch als entschiedener Infotopist. Traditionelle geschlossene Expertenzirkel, so zeigt er, werden häufig zu »Informationskokons«, aus denen heraus nicht selten Entscheidungen mit fatalen Folgen getroffen werden – etwa jene, die zur Rechtfertigung des Irak-Krieges, zum Zusammenbruch von Enron und zum Absturz des Space Shuttle Columbia geführt haben. Die neuen Formen kollektiven Wissenserwerbs unterliegen hingegen einem Prozeß, in dem Informationen fortlaufend und öffentlich ausgetauscht, aktualisiert und kritisiert werden. Anhand zahlreicher schlagender Beispiele und mit theoretischer Prägnanz erarbeitet Sunstein Regeln für eine Kommunikation im offenen Wissensnetzwerk, mit denen sich diese Diskussionsprozesse so gestalten lassen, daß wir zu mehr und vor allem exakterem Wissen kommen, an dem wir im infotopischen Idealfall alle partizipieren können.

        Journey in Trumplandia: The Rise of Populism in America

        by Tiberiu Dianu

        The book is a collection of essays about the transformation of America, which has turned from a united nation to one more divided than ever. Some pundits predict that, if things don’t change, another civil war could occur. Have we reached a point of no return? Hopefully, America is mature enough to learn from its mistakes and avoid further scars along its evolving history. "Trumplandia is a welcome addition toward understanding current events, Washington’s international policy, and the present American society; a society polarized and divided as it has not been since the Civil War.” NICHOLAS DIMA, Ph.D., Adjunct Professor and Research Associate, Nelson Institute, James Madison University, Virginia. "The book is fascinating. It provides background to, and insights into [the] current and past political history as well as offering a personal view... of the country and society. Presented in thematic form in chapters and sections, the insights offered provide a suggestive radiography...” Dr. DENNIS DELETANT, OBE, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University, Washington DC. "There has been this backsliding in... what a truly functioning rule-of-law state is, that has proper separation of co-equal powers, which, if you don’t keep working on that, you backslide. And I am even worried about that here, in the United States right now, about backsliding.” OBIE MOORE, Esq., OLM Advisors LLC, Washington DC “Indeed, Trumplandia should be a welcome addition to any scholar, student or layman’s library, especially in its international edition. If anyone loses sleep over its challenging assertions, then it will have been well worth it.” ERNESTO MORALES HIZON, Ph.D. Candidate in American and Comparative Politics at Claremont Graduate University, Member, Integrated Bar of the Philippines ABOUT THE AUTHOR: TIBERIU DIANU has practiced law in Romania (as a corporate lawyer, judge, senior counselor at the Ministry of Justice, university professor and senior legal researcher), and in the United States (as a legal expert for the judiciary). He published several books and a host of articles in law, politics, and post-communist societies. Tiberiu currently lives and works in Washington, DC.
