An ethnography of militancy, emotions and violence

The battles between Athenian anarchists and the Greek state have received a high degree of media attention recently. But away from the intensity of street protests militants implement anarchist practices whose outcomes are far less visible. They feed the hungry and poor, protect migrants from fascist beatings and try to carve out an autonomous political, social and cultural space. Activists within the movement share politics centred on hostility to the capitalist state and all forms of domination, hierarchy and discrimination. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork among Athenian anarchists and anti-authoritarians, Anarchy in Athens unravels the internal complexities within this milieu and provides a better understanding of the forces that give the space its shape.

Chr. im Athener Dionysostheater die Medea des Euripides zum ersten Mal gespielt wird, erleben die Zuschauer ein Zeitstück, ein Stück über die gesellschaftliche Position der Frau und über das Zusammenleben mit Ausländern, sie sehen auf der Bühne ihre Welt, ihre Gefühle, ihr tägliches Leben.Ausgehend von seiner Neuübersetzung der Tragödie des Euripides, illustriert Hubert Ortkemper in Exkursen sowohl den mythologischen Hintergrund der Tragödie als auch den zeitgeschichtlichen Kontext eine informative und unterhaltsame Einführung in das Leben in Athen im Jahr 431 v. Chr., dem Höhepunkt der griechischen Kultur.

Beginnend mit dem Sitznachbarn auf dem Hinflug, seinen Schilderungen von schnellen Booten und gescheiterten Ehen, erzählen ihre Bekanntschaften von Ängsten, Begierden, Versäumnissen und Lieblingstheorien. In der erstickenden Hitze und dem Lärm der Stadt erschaffen diese verschiedenen Stimmen ein komplexes Tableau menschlichen Lebens. Und dabei wird, zunächst in Umrissen, zugleich das Bild einer Frau – der Schriftstellerin – kenntlich, die zu lernen beginnt, einem einschneidenden Verlust zu begegnen.
