        Worrier state

        Risk, anxiety and moral panic in South Africa

        by Nicky Falkof

        Risk, anxiety and moral panic are endemic to contemporary societies and media forms. How do these phenomena manifest in a place like South Africa, which features heightened insecurity, deep inequality and accelerated social change? What happens when cultures of fear intersect with pervasive systems of gender, race and class? Worrier state investigates four case studies in which fear and anxiety appear in radically different ways: the far right myth of 'white genocide'; so-called 'Satanist' murders of young women; an urban legend about township crime; and social theories about safety and goodness in the suburbs. Falkof foregrounds the significance of emotion as a socio-political force, emphasising South Africa's imbrication within globalised conditions of anxiety and thus its fundamental and often-ignored hypermodernity. The book offers a bold and creative perspective on the social roles of fear and emotion in South Africa and thus on everyday life in this complex place.

        Intimacy and injury

        In the wake of #MeToo in India and South Africa

        by Nicky Falkof, Srila Roy, Shilpa Phadke

        Both India and South Africa have shared the infamy of being labelled the world's 'rape capitals', with high levels of everyday gender-based and sexual violence. At the same time, both boast long histories of resisting such violence and its location in wider cultures of patriarchy, settler colonialism and class and caste privilege. Through the lens of the #MeToo moment, the book tracks histories of feminist organising in both countries, while also revealing how newer strategies extended or limited these struggles. Intimacy and injury is a timely mapping of a shifting political field around gender-based violence in the global south. In proposing comparative, interdisciplinary, ethnographically rich and analytically astute reflections on #MeToo, it provides new and potentially transformative directions to scholarly debates this book builds transnational feminist knowledge and solidarity in and across the global south.

        Birth controlled

        Selective reproduction and neoliberal eugenics in South Africa and India

        by Amrita Pande

        This book analyses the world of selective reproduction by a critical analysis of three modes of controlling birth, namely contraception, reproductive violence, and repro-genetic technologies. All population control policies target and vilify women (Black women in particular), and coerce them into subjecting their bodies to state and medical surveillance; Birth controlled argues that assisted reproductive technologies and repro-genetic technologies employ a similar and stratified burden of blame and responsibility based on gender, race, class and caste. The book draws on gender studies, sociology, medical anthropology, politics, science and technology studies, theology, public health and epidemiology to provides a critical, interdisciplinary and cutting-edge dialogue around the interconnected issues that shape reproductive politics in an ostensibly 'post-population control' era.

        Roy Ward Baker

        by Geoff Mayer, Brian McFarlane, Neil Sinyard

        This book traces the career of Roy Ward Baker, one of the great survivors of the British film and television industry. He directed the landmark British film Morning Departure (1949), worked at Twentieth Century Fox in Hollywood in the early 1950s where he directed Marilyn Monroe's 'breakthrough' film (Don't Bother to Knock), and followed this with a succession of fine films for Rank, culminating in the best version of the Titanic disaster, A Night to Remember in 1958. Yet within three years he was unable to secure a job in the British film industry and he moved to television series such as The Avengers, The Saint and Minder. Later Baker re-emerged as a major director of science-fiction (Quatermass and the Pit) and horror films (Asylum). Geoff Mayer provides an industrial and aesthetic context in which to understand the interrelationship between a skilled classical director and the transformation of the British film industry in the 1950s. ;

        Roman

        by Don Winslow, Chris Hirte

        Jack Wade war der Star der Abteilung für Brandstiftung des Orange County Sheriff Departments (Kalifornien), bis ihn eine angebliche Falschaussage die Karriere kostete. Dass sein Kollege Bentley die Finger im Spiel hatte, ist eine andere Geschichte. Für seinen neuen Arbeitgeber, die „California Fire & Life“, ermittelt er in einem Versicherungsfall: Das Anwesen des Immobilienmoguls Nicky Vale ist bis auf die Grundmauern abgebrannt – mitsamt seiner jungen Frau Pamela. Bis er herausfindet, dass Nicky Vale mitnichten der unbescholtene amerikanische Bürger ist, als der er sich ausgibt, wird die Sache so heiß, daß Jack Gefahr läuft, sich die Finger zu verbrennen. Russische Erpresser und abtrünnige KBG-Agenten, Antiquitätenhändler und Versicherungsbetrüger, vietnamesische Gangs und abgelegte Liebschaften – Jack Wade verstrickt sich in einem Dickicht aus Verschwörung, Korruption und Betrug, so sehr, dass er am Ende beschließt, Feuer mit Feuer zu bekämpfen.

        by Roy Jacobsen, Gabriele Haefs, Andreas Brunstermann

        Barrøy – so heißt die kleine Insel vor Norwegens atemberaubender Küste, auf der Ingrid aufwächst, fernab der übrigen Welt. Bis eines Tages der mörderische Weltkrieg den verschlafenen Ort einholt: Der Kriegsgefangene Alexander, ein Russe, findet nach einem tragischen Schiffsunglück Zuflucht auf der Insel. Ingrid verliebt sich in den schweigsamen Mann, doch ihre Liebe kann nur kurz währen, bis die deutschen Besatzer Alexander inhaftieren. Neun Monate später bekommt Ingrid eine Tochter. Der Krieg ist nun vorbei, das Land will nichts anderes als vergessen. Doch Ingrid kann Alexander nicht vergessen. Mit Kaja vor den Bauch gebunden, macht sie sich auf die Reise durch ein kriegserschüttertes Land, auf der Suche nach Alexander, ihrer großen Liebe. Roy Jacobsens Insel-Saga erzählt, auch vor dem Hintergrund deutscher Geschichte, mit außergewöhnlichem Sog vom Leben einer Familie in überwältigender Natur, von starken, eigenwilligen Frauen, von Schuld und Kollaboration.
