View Rights PortalThe large-scale destruction of tropical rain forests and the consequences of the loss of their rich, complex ecosystems is one of the most well-publicised, globally important environmental issues of the late twentieth century. The bulk of the remaining forest is to be found in the Amazon Basin, largely in Brazil and the rapid expansion of cattle ranching has been implicated as the main cause of irreversible deforestation in this part of South America over the last decade. This book brings together and critically assesses the economic, agronomic and environmental evidence for the benefits and costs of cattle ranching in the Amazon region. The ecology of the Amazon rain forest is described, along with methods of economic valuation of forests, agricultural systems in the Amazon, the history and underlying causes of its colonisation and the effects on land use, and the extent of deforestation. This leads on to a more detailed description of the cattle ranching systems employed in the Amazon, their economics and effects on the forest. In conclusion, the potential for sustainable cattle production in the Amazon is discussed. The product of considerable field research in Brazil by the author, this book presents a positive perspective on a highly controversial topic, in a uniquely systematic way and with far-reaching implications. It is an essential purchase for livestock economists, agronomists, foresters and environmentalists with an interest in South American and other tropical regions. It will also be a valuable source for advanced students of agronomy, animal science, agricultural economics and ecology.

Backed by Brazil's wealthy agribusiness groups, a growing evangelical movement, and an emboldened military and police force, Jair Bolsonaro took office in 2019. Driven by the former army captain's brand of controversial, aggressive rhetoric, the divisive presidential campaign saw fake news and misinformation shared with Bolsonaro's tens of millions of social media followers. Bolsonaro promised simple solutions to Brazil's rising violent crime, falling living standards and widespread corruption, but what has emerged is Latin America's most right-wing president since the military dictatorships of the 1970s. Famous for his racist, homophobic and sexist beliefs and his disregard for human rights, the so-called 'Trump of the Tropics' has established a reputation based on his polemical, sensationalist statements. Written by a journalist with decades of experience in the field, Beef, Bible and bullets is a compelling account of the origins of Brazil's unique brand of right-wing populism. Lapper offers the first major assessment of the Bolsonaro government and the growing tensions between extremist and moderate conservatives.
The life of Chico Mendes is the story of a humble rubber tapper who became an international hero because of his work to save the rain forest and improve the lives of those who have made a living caring for and working on it for generations. As a rubber tapper in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, Mendes saw firsthand the problems caused by cattle ranchers buying large plots of land and burning the forest for their own commercial needs. He dedicated his life to teaching the world what was happening to this treasured natural resource and leading his fellow rubber tappers in a movement to save the forest—and their livelihood. Chico Mendes, Updated Edition explores the life, work, and legacy of a dedicated hero in the conservation movement.
The loss of biological diversity has become an increased concern over recent years and is now enshrined in international conventions. Most biodiversity in fact occurs in the soil. Soil organisms (especially bacteria, fungi and soil invertebrates) play a major role in the formation of soil structure and are primary agents of decomposition and are drivers of nutrient cycling, and hence agricultural production. This book reviews soil biodiversity in one of the key biodiversity hotspots of the world, i.e. the Amazon and nearby regions of Brazil. It covers both the tropical savannah and rain forests . The work reported is based on a project "Conservation and Sustainable Management of Below-Ground Biodiversity", executed by TSBF-CIAT with co-financing from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implementation support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The book represents a major contribution to the literature and will interest those in biodiversity conservation, soil scienceand ecology and biodiversity conservation.
The cacao (Theobroma cacao) plant is an important Neo-Tropical species whose natural habitat is the Amazon basin. Over the last 30 years there has been a considerable geographical expansion in the availability of cacao genetic resources. As a result the plant has a rich genetic diversity that exists at two levels: that of the primitive populations in the area of original distribution of the species, and that of the derived cultivated populations. This book provides a comprehensive review of our current knowledge of the diversity of the species. It starts by examining the diversity and inheritance of the characteristics of primitive populations in the Amazonian and Caribbean regions. It then looks at the evolution of diversity within cultivated populations first in South America and around the Caribbean, and then beyond the Americas. The book describes the inter-relationships between populations based on morphological and molecular markers. It also examines the conservation of genetic resources and how these genetic resources can be utilized to produce new cultivars.
