Das Leben der Wiera Gran

Warschau, 1941/42. Tagsüber kümmert sie sich um ihre kranke Mutter, abends ist sie der Star des Ghettos. Wunderschön und geheimnisvoll, so erleben die Besucher die 25-jährige Sängerin allabendlich auf der Bühne des Café Sztuka, wo sie zumeist von Władysław Szpilman am Klavier begleitet wird, von dem Mann, den Polanski in seinem Film »Der Pianist« weltberühmt machen sollte. Kurz nach den ersten Deportationen flieht Wiera Gran aus dem Ghetto und überlebt den Holocaust. Nach dem Krieg kehrt sie nach Warschau zurück, doch Szpilman beschuldigt sie der Kollaboration mit den Nazis. Obwohl Wiera Gran von diesem Vorwurf freigesprochen wird, bleibt das Stigma an ihr haften. Wo sie auch auftritt, in der Carnegie Hall oder in Israel, allein oder mit Charles Aznavour, immer wieder wird sie mit einer Vergangenheit, die nicht die ihre ist, konfrontiert. Vereinsamt, verbittert und vergessen stirbt Wiera Gran 2007 in Paris. Agata Tuszyńska konnte das Vertrauen der Sängerin gewinnen und mit ihr sprechen. Geschrieben hat sie ein Buch über den Lebenskampf einer Frau, ein hartes und gleichsam warmherziges Plädoyer gegen die Grausamkeit des Schicksals.

A richly illustrated book about the fauna of the Baltic Sea for preschool and early school children. The fairy tales - although full of anthropomorphization and imaginary elements - smuggle many facts about the history, threats and ecology of the Baltic Sea. They have great educational potential and fill the gap in books for children related to the Baltic Sea. The author takes the children on a journey into the depths of the Baltic Sea. They will find out how it was created, meet many of its inhabitants and overhear what they are talking about when nobody is watching. They will also learn that many human behaviors affect the life of the sea, which should be remembered, for example, when relaxing on the seaside beaches. The story is presented in a friendly form of short fairy tales, in which the author skillfully weave information about the species of creatures inhabiting the Baltic Sea - their appearance, biology and habits, as well as how we can make their life near people easier and safer. The fairy tales are complemented by a small atlas at the end, with the help of which we will get to know our heroes even better. As the author writes: (...) “The book Fairy Tales from the Baltic Depth is the result of my passion for nature, cultivated since childhood, as well as the need to make up and tell fairy tales. I gained my love and respect for nature from my family home where I discovered the names of species, watched, admired and tried to understand. It didn't get over it with my age, nature still delights me, amazes me and makes me discover its secrets. The deep ecology trend with the theory of biocentrism is a great inspiration for me, I like to look at the world from the perspective where we - humans are not the most important, but just as important as other creatures. "

Liliana Segre’s testimony and her political message are shared in this essay by Giuseppe Civati that reports her words and her teachings, on the occasion of her appointment as lifetime Italian Senator by Italian President Sergio Mattarella.Segre was expelled from school in 1938. She tried to flee Italy as an asylum seeker but was denied protection and was sent back. On January 30th, 1944 she was deported to Auschwitz with her father Alberto, who deceased in the concentration camp. In the last thirty years she has been promoting an extraordinary campaign against indifference and against racism in any form or aspect.Her undisputed, strong and clear words are a message for girls and boys, her «ideal grandchildren»: we must never lose our rights and respect for people.

Marta is a normal 13-year-old girl. She lives in Betulia, a minuscule country where nothing exciting ever happens. She likes normal things for her age (like the band Euphoria and going out with her friends) and politics has always seemed like a total bore to her until one day, in a fight with her arch rival at school, she decides to run for class president. Hector Ruffian, Jr. is the son of the sinister and corrupt President Ruffian. But the election for class president is at the same time as the national presidential election, and a misunderstanding leads the inhabitants of Betulia, fed up with the same old politicians, to vote in mass for Marta as the country's first president. Girl power!!! Marta is in shock. Her as president?! But Betulia's laws are very clear on this point: No president can step down without having served for at least 100 days. Being president is tough, but Marta has two huge allies: Agatha (best friend and Minister of Science and Sparkly Things) and Jeremy, her friend who loves cooking (even though everyone tells him that cooking is for girls). Even though being president won't get her out of having to wear the school uniform! A novel that breaks cliches, switches up roles, and keeps you laughing.

"To those who think Europe matters, and even more so, to those who don’t”… Michael Tracy’s “Memoirs” recount his experiences from boyhood in wartime Scotland, through hi life in “public school” and university, to postings in various international organisations and a senior position within the European Union in Brussels; then to involvement in Russia and other Central/European countries in the 1990s. The book concludes with an assessment of current issues facing both the EU and Russia; also Britain in its relations with the EU. . . . . . Michael Tracy grew up in Scotland during the war of 193945. After gaining scholarships to Fettes College in Edinburgh, then to Cambridge University (studying Modern Languages, then Economics), he worked in international organisations and for ten years was a Director in the Council Secretariat of the European Union. He also pursued an academic career, writing on agricultural policy and economics and lecturing in various European universities, including Wye College in England and the College of Europe in Bruges. In Moscow in 1991 he witnessed at close quarters the collapse of the Soviet Union, and subsequently was involved in a new institute in St. Petersburg. Subsequently he had advisory and teaching roles in the countries of Central/Eastern Europe during their transition to market economies and accession to the European Union. His final chapter assesses the issues currently facing both the European Union and Russia. Taking the story up to May 2010, it discusses the prospects for the eurozone, and the implications of Britain’s new coalition government for Britain’s relations with the EU (a subject which he has followed from the outset in the late 1950s). This is not a history: it is a personal, lively and often humorous account of Michael Tracy’s experiences, in which personal contacts figure largely. Nor is it a tract for or against the European Union; on the other hand, it sheds a more human light on proceedings in “Brussels”. Graham Dalton of the University of Aberdeen admires the depth of knowledge at the heart of Michael Tracy’s memoir and concludes: “His thoughts on Europe are wellfounded, rounded and are to be taken seriously.” Michael Tracy has been President of the British Agricultural Economics Society and is an honorary member of the Académie d’Agriculture de France. His other main works are: Government and Agriculture in Western Europe, 18801988 (3rd edn. 1989); Food and Agriculture in a Market Economy – an introduction to theory, practice and policy (1993); and in retirement: The World of the Edwardian Child, as seen in Arthur Mee’s Children’s Encyclopædia 19081910 (2008). c After retirement, Michael continues to live mainly in Belgium, where he and his wife have a “hobby farm” with pedigree sheep. He also spends time in an Andalucian mountain village. His main hobby in both places is as an amateur pianist, is making music with friends.
