Children's & YABoo! When My Sister Died
by Richa Jha and Gautam Benegal
When Noorie’s sister Zoya dies, everything in Noorie’s world becomes silent. She knows her sister has gone forever. But what’s with Mummy’s silly lies that Zoya will always be around, by their side? And what is she to do about Zoya’s best friend Dhara, who just won’t leave Noorie alone? Boo! When My Sister Died is a story about finding strength in love and loss. Gautam Benegal blends a playful watercolour and wash-style with a somber digital crosshatch to bring together warmth in the memories of the sisters’ togetherness and the intensity of Noorie’s grief. Richa Jha’s spare and simple text keeps the story poignant, believable, and full of hope.

The ArtsJune 2006Mourning becomes...
Post/memory and commemoration of the concentration camps of the South African War 1899–1902
by Elizabeth Stanley, Bertrand Taithe, Roger Cooter, Carolyn Steedman
This fascinating work challenges many of the accepted facts about the concentration camps run by the British during the South African War. The author demonstrates that much of what we have traditionally understood about these camps originates the testimony which was solicited, selected and published by key women activists within Boer proto-nationalist circles. Using detailed archival evidence, she shows that much of the history of the camps results from a deliberate imposition of 'post/memory' - a process by which what was 'remembered' was shaped and reshaped to support the development of a racialised nationalist framework. Many of the camps' occupants died from successive epidemics of measles, typhoid, enteritis and pneumonia rather than deliberate ill-treatment, yet the book shows how mourning for those who died was overridden by state commemorative activities concerned with promoting pan-Boer nationalist aspirations. The innovative and groundbreaking approach of the author invites the reader to step into and explore with her the commemorative sites passed by nationalist land acts, which still powerfully mark the South African landscape. ;

What happens when a mother dies? Death affects us in many ways, because of the absence and the emptiness it provokes. Sometimes the sadness is such that it makes us wonder through life aimlessly. Then we settle in nostalgia.

SELF REMEMBERING
The Path to Non-Judgmental Love
by Red Hawk
Self Remembering: The Path to Non-Judgmental Love is a companion piece to the author’s previous book Self Observation: The Awakening of Conscience, also from Hohm Press, which is fast becoming a classic. Taken together, they present the most detailed examination of the practice available in English. Red Hawk clearly points out that self remembering is only one half of a foundational spiritual practice called “self observation/self remembering.” Where other authors/teachers have gone wrong in the past is to take only one half of this practice and consider it the whole, entire unto itself. There has not been a book-length study on self remembering that examines the practice from the many angles that Red Hawk’s does. His chapters cover such diverse yet integrated topics as: the Removal of Self Importance; Kaya Sadhana or the wisdom of the body; and Separation Grief, i.e., addressing the terror of our current situation without denial or dramatics.

February 2018Rhythm of Heartbreak. Verdammte Liebe
by Schulz, Heike

General & world history2024The Sadness of Our Museums
Derivations of Modernity in Latin America
by Cecilia Bettoni
La tristeza de los museos is an essay that addresses the inevitable tensions between the importation of cultural models in Latin America and the slogan of the settlement of a project of modernity. The book analyzes these tensions based on the painting exhibition “From Manet to our days”, an official shipment of the French government that circulated between 1949 and 1950 through Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Peru, Chile and Uruguay, and places special emphasis on the dynamics and positioning of Latin American artistic circuits in the new cultural and geopolitical map that was beginning to take shape after World War II. Through diplomatic and press archives, correspondence and other sources, Cecilia Bettoni puts together an agile and meticulous account that contrasts the anachronism of the French strategy to recover its cultural dominance over Latin America and the skepticism of Latin American countries regarding the validity of that model, in a cultural, political and economic scenario significantly transformed by the American influence and by the legitimate desires of vanguard and autonomy that were emerging in the Southern Cone in the middle of the 20th century.
