        The World of the North

Between Ragnarok and welfare utopia: A cultural-historical deconstruction

        by Bernd Henningsen

        — Analysis of how we view Europe's North and how this image emerged — An outsider's perspective on Nordic societies and their self image — Serves as an introduction into Northern European culture and society Our image of Northern Europe has been shaped by projections and desires in the long history of encounters: berserkers and war atrocities, bad weather, beautiful nature, stable political systems, social welfare, equality and prosperity, peacefulness, low corruption, hygge and Bullerby – all this is part of the Nordic narrative. But what about the religious, linguistic and ethnic homogeneity, what about the muchvaunted Nordic cooperation? How do politics "work" in the North? Why are Northern Europeans the happiest people?

Joining up in the Second World War

Enlistment, masculinity and the memory of the Great War

        by Joel Morley

This book connects the First and Second World Wars. It uses oral histories and Mass Observation material to explore men's attitudes to Second World War enlistment and the relationship they perceived between military service and masculinity, and how these were influenced by understandings of the First World War. Locating the cultural legacy of First World War in the subjectivities of men who participated in the Second World War demonstrates the breadth of sources that informed men's understandings of the First World War in interwar Britain. Its cultural legacy was omnipresent and diverse, and informed young men's attitudes and service preferences, but it reinforced Edwardian conceptions of wartime masculinity as often as it undermined them. Two decades after the First World War ended, they remained resilient in the subjective understandings of men who grew up in the Great War's shadow.

        Worst Seller

        by Bighead Horse

“Your biggest problem,” shouts a sadistic instructor at a confused group of writers, “is that you’re too mass-market!” The first story in Bighead Horse’s How to Write a Worstseller tells of an unusual workshop whose participants learn how to curb their sales appeal. This book generates from this story and fictionalises a writing contest with prize of 30 million RMB. The stories touch upon a rich range of topics and display a diverse spectrum of styles, while the author is concealed in the elaborated stories and hidden behind the different writer identities. This collection of stories demonstrates the author's command of writing novels in different styles and themes.

The second half of your life - a manual

Tips and strategies for successful ageing

        by Dr. Petra Kiedaisch

In the middle of our lives, the cards are reshuffled: marriages are divorced, careers are questioned, friendships are ended, questions of meaning are asked, bodies change - and not just hormonally. At the same time, children leave home and parents become carers. From the age of 45, the majority of our population is at the centre of a second upheaval that affects all facets of our lives and leaves us at a loss in many ways. Not only in our daily lives, but also when it comes to planning for our own old age. This guide is designed to help us find our way. It presents the most important information from all areas relevant to a good life after 45. Leading experts from the fields of medicine, nutrition, philosophy, theology, psychology, care, law and finance give recommendations on what to look out for and what tools are needed to get through these challenging years unscathed. Useful checklists round off the articles. The book shows us the unique opportunity to see these challenges not as a crisis but as a source of strength. Not only can we come through this period of our lives healthy and happy, but we can also shape it so that the next age threshold is no longer frightening. During the second phase of adolescence, we lay the foundations for whether and how we will grow older. Be it in terms of health or living together with family and friends. A Vision of Battlements

        by Anthony Burgess

        by Andrew Biswell, Paul Wake

A Vision of Battlements is the first novel by the writer and composer Anthony Burgess, who was born in Manchester in 1917. Set in Gibraltar during the Second World War, the book follows the fortunes of Richard Ennis, an army sergeant and incipient composer who dreams of composing great music and building a new cultural world after the end of the war. Following the example of his literary hero, James Joyce, Burgess takes the structure of his book from Virgil's Aeneid. The result is, like Joyce's Ulysses, a comic rewriting of a classical epic, whose critique of the Army and the postwar settlement is sharp and assured. The Irwell Edition is the first publication of Burgess's forgotten masterpiece since 1965. This new edition includes an introduction and notes by Andrew Biswell, author of a prize-winning biography of Anthony Burgess.

        In good taste

How Britain’s middle classes found their style

        by Ben Highmore, Christopher Breward

In postwar Britain, journalists and politicians prophesised that the class system would not survive a consumer culture where everyone had TVs and washing machines, and where more and more people owned their own homes. They were to be proved entirely wrong. In good taste charts how class culture, rather than being destroyed by mass consumption, was remade from flat-pack furniture, Mediterranean cuisine and lifestyle magazines. Novelists, cartoonists and playwrights satirised the tastes of the emerging middle classes, and sociologists claimed that an entire population was suffering from status anxiety, but underneath it all, a world was being constructed out of duvets, quiches and mayonnaise, easy chairs from Habitat, white emulsion paint and ubiquitous well-scrubbed, second-hand pine kitchen tables. This was less a world of symbolic goods and more an intimate environment alive with new feelings and attitudes.

The Beauty of Traditional Chinese Make-up

        by Ya Li, Shiyu Chen

Based on ancient Chinese documents, images and cultural relics, combined with mass pictures, this book traces the aesthetic changes of ancient Chinese makeup. The authors are committed to making up for the lack of makeup images, trying to restore some makeups that can be only found in historical records without pictures. Therefore, they initiated the ancient Chinese makeup restoration project, inviting makeup artists, photographers and models to work together to restore the full spectrum of Chinese women's makeup. The book not only reveals key turning points of women's makeup in nearly three thousand years, but also presents the changes in women's status and aesthetic trends in ancient Chinese society.

        Forest Hydrology

        Processes, Management and Assessment

by Leon Bren, Devendra Amatya, Thomas Williams, Carmen de Jong, Ge Sun

Forests cover about a third of the world's land surface area. They represent a distinct biotic community, provide a living for many millions of people, and provide fresh water to sustain communities. Forests capture part of the precipitation and pass the remainder into the soil. Some of this is then passed back to the atmosphere along with some to streams as a regulated outflow. Forest cover is generally the preferred land-use for clean water supplies, recreation, tourism, and other ecosystem benefits around the world. In many cases the value of the water exceeds the value of other forest products. The discipline "forest hydrology" was developed in the 19th and 20th Century with the aim of putting such water cycling processes into a scientific framework incorporating forest watershed management. The 21st Century has seen proliferations of new technologies that have changed society, our living environment, and this discipline. Forests are also facing unprecedented threats from land conversion, fire, drought, and the changing climate. The discipline of forest hydrology must address these issues with innovation and new ideas. The 2nd Edition of Forest Hydrology: - Presents advances of understanding of key forest hydrologic processes (particularly evapotranspiration) - Presents cutting-edge thinking and assessments in global forest hydrology, including state-of-the-art modelling and methodologies - Presents innovative findings about the impacts of forest fires on the rate of catchment formation and how past fires have led to the catchments we take for granted - Describes the latest challenges facing forest hydrology, such as increased occurrences of disturbance due to extreme precipitation and floods, drought, disease, fire, and their association with climate change - Reviews the latest perceptions of the value of forested catchments compared to alternatives such as desalination plants - Is written by an internationally renowned team of scientists, engineers, and forest managers to give a well-rounded view of the subject This book is essential reading for graduate students, professionals, land managers, practitioners, and researchers with a good understanding of the basic principles of hydrology and hydrologic processes.
