Paedophilia continues to be a public and emotive topic in contemporary Britain which is capable of generating great and varying levels of interest, concern and condemnation. The child at risk charts these social responses and unravels their underlying dynamics through detailed empirical research and theoretical analysis. Anneke Meyer looks beyond the media and 'moral panics' for explanations of emotive social responses and the paradox pervading them (the paradox of increased regulation, of paedophiles and children, coinciding with continuing popular concern). Drawing on and developing a wide range of theoretical frameworks, the book identifies a number of dynamics which produce concern and renders regulation designed to reduce fears ineffective. These dynamics include the moral rhetoric of childhood and the exposition of the crisis of neo-liberalism and conceptualisations of 'the paedophile' as a dangerous pervert. As a result the book points beyond its immediate subject and furthers understanding in the areas of risk, childhood and governance, as well as collective concerns and emotions. It will be essential reading in sociology, media studies and for those interested in media representation and governance. ;

A ground breaking new book that considers all Siddal poems with reference to female and primarily male counterparts, adding substantially to knowledge of her work as a writer, and their shared contemporary concerns. Dante Rossetti, Swinburne, Tennyson, Ruskin and Keats were either known to her or a source of influence on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with which she was associated, and certain of their texts are compared with hers to discuss interplay between erotic and spiritual love, the ballad tradition, nineteenth-century feminism, and the Romantic concept of the conjoined physical and spectral body. Siddal's artwork is used to introduce each chapter, while other Pre-Raphaelite paintings illuminate the texts and further the inter-disciplinary philosophy of the Brotherhood. This important and stimulating book focuses on the intrinsic merit of Siddal's poetics whilst advocating a research method that could have multiple applications elsewhere.

Education in the British Empire, 1830-1910

Many missionary societies established mission schools in the nineteenth century in the British Empire as a means to convert non-Europeans to Christianity. Although the details, differed in various colonial contexts, the driving ideology behind mission schools was that Christian morality was highest form of civilisation needed for non-Europeans to be useful members of colonies under British rule. This comprehensive survey of multi-colonial sites over the long time span clearly describes the missionary paradox that to draw in pupils they needed to provide secular education, but that secular education was seen to lead both to a moral crisis and to anti-British sentiments.

Der Begriff des phänomenologischen Strukturalismus erscheint auf den ersten Blick als außerordentlich paradox, waren und sind es doch in erster Linie die existentialistisch orientierten Phänomenologen, die den Strukturalismus und seine angebliche Verleugnung des Subjekts bekämpfen, wie umgekehrt die Strukturalisten den Phänomenologen mit Ablehnung begegnen. Holenstein kann aber zeigen, daß im Werk des Linguisten Roman Jakobson beide Strömungen konvergieren, daß in ihm der bis heute die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung beherrschende Widerspruch von Diachronie und Synchronie, Geschichte und Struktur, Dynamik und Statik produktiv aufgehoben ist. Für Jakobsons Linguistik ist charakteristisch, daß in ihr alle Aspekte, Schichten, und Bezugspunkte der Sprache eine Behandlung finden, die ihre innere Autonomie und ihre Interdependenz, ihre strukturellen Beziehungen und ihren zeitlichen Ort gleichermaßen respektiert. Dies sichert ihr eine Bedeutung weit über die traditionellen Grenzen der Sprachwissenschaft hinaus. Holensteins souveräne Interpretation arbeitet denn auch den transdisziplinären Aspekt des Werks von Jakobson überaus plastisch und eindringlich heraus.

‘Mayan-women’ in Guatemala on the eve of ‘peace’

How do people seek security in relation to their sense of 'who they are'? How can one make sense of insecurity at the intersection of competing identity claims? Based on the voices of Mayan women, Stern critically re-considers the connections between security, subjectivity and identity. By engaging in a careful reading of how Mayan women 'speak' security in relation to the different contexts that inform their lives, she explores the multiplicity of both identity and security, and questions the main story of security imbedded in the modern 'paradox of sovereignty.' Her provocative analysis thus raises vital questions about what might constitute 'security', and the 'insecurity' that is its inevitable supplement. Her study also offers an innovative methodology that bridges many different disciplines and substantively develops the method of 'reading' politics as a 'textual practice'. It will be essential reading for students of security, identity politics, feminism, and Latin American studies.
