        Arena Publishing is one of the major publishing companies for children’s and young adult fiction in Germany. Founded in 1949 by Georg Popp, its place of business has been Würzburg ever since. Georg Popp had been the head of the company for thirty years. Since 1979, Arena Publishing has been a part of the Westermann Publishing Group situated in Braunschweig. Ever since the company’s establishment, the name Arena has been standing for knowledge and entertainment, for sophisticated, informative, and simultaneously thrilling children’s and young adult fiction. As the first publisher in Germany, Arena launched a paperback series for children and young adults in 1958. The publishing house receives the German Children’s Literature Award for Otfried Preußler’s “Krabat” in 1972, as well as for “The Long March of Lucas B.” by Willi Fährmann in 1981. In 1981, Arena pioneered in developing a pedagogically thought-out, multilevel concept for learning to read, which is today known as “Bookbear First Readers Collection”. Since 1987, the children’s and young adult fiction programme of Zurich publishing company Benziger belongs to Arena.In 2000, Arena took over Ensslin Publishing, a publisher founded in 1818 with a programme steeped in tradition.Arena started its own audiobook programme in 2006 labelled “Arena audio”. With about 2,000 available titles, Arena Publishing nowadays keeps a diverse range for infants, children, and young adults on hand.Arena is a partner of the picture book prize “Der Meefisch”.

        Arepas colombianas: técnicas profesionales de cocina

        Sweet, salty or with a neutral flavor, arepas, an essential food in the diet of Colombians, are the protagonists in this book, which compiles the preparation techniques of 60 different types of arepas.   From a dough that is assembled in different ways, either freehand, with a cutter, stuffed with double dough, stuffed with double arepa, cooked on the grill, slabs, pots, ovens or fried, the arepas that are prepared in the different areas of the country are arracacha, rice, corn, fermented corn, peeled and threshed corn; yam, potato, banana, wheat and cassava. Round in shape and variable in size, arepas, too, vary according to the secondary ingredients that are added, such as milk, butter, cheese, pork fat, egg, meat or pea.   Easy to prepare, hot or cold, arepas are delicious at any time of the day; with coffee or chocolate, they always go well.

The third volume, which gathers the original work of the 93 biographies with their 79 illustrated recipes, is still under development and is expected to be published in July 2020. This volume will also include five Venezuelan songs on MP3 format, from several Venezuelan musicians, and 60 panoramic 360º photographs.

        This book first came out in 1954 and it’s considered one of the pioneers in trying to paint a picture of our cuisine. The second volume boasts the other 63, and 49 remaining recipes, prepared by several Venezuelan chefs that are in exile. It wasn’t possible to write down the recipes for all biographies, since some include entries about the tabaco del guácharo, coffee, white rum, and pollo cañero (a type of toad eaten in the Orinoco Delta), among others. The new edition of Geografía gastronómica venezolana also includes a photographic journey with panoramic images from emblematic Venezuelan locations.

        CELIA, THE GIRL WHO SANG WITH HER HANDS

        Celia is a girl like many others her age, but she has something special: she can speak with her hands and hear with her eyes, because her ears don’t function - she is deaf. The story is told through the letters that the girl writes to her mother. Celia arrived in Santiago de Chile to live with her aunt and uncle, while her family remains in Colombia. She writes to her mother about her difficult experiences at school, where no one knows how to speak in sign language. However, thanks to the commitment of the director, she achieves important changes in the school, which is enriched by opening up to the world of deaf people and getting to know, through her, the culture of another country. The book has two attached resources, which help to bring deaf and hearing children closer together: a manual of the alphabet of the Chilean sign language included in the book, as well as a video that shows the pages in the sign language transcription and the reading version in off on the publisher’s website.
