Watch production in the twenty-first century is concentrated in three countries: Switzerland, Japan and China. The industry is dominated by a dozen or so large companies, including the Swatch Group, Richemont, LVMH, Seiko and Fossil. But a hundred years ago the picture was dramatically different. Over the course of a century, Great Britain, France, the United States and Russia saw the manufacture of watches disappear from their territory. At the same time, Hong Kong went from being a subcontractor of watch components to an intermediary between Chinese factories and the world market. Dragonflies are among the most familiar and popular of all insects, deeply embedded in human cultural history. They are iconic and tell us much about the environments in which we and they live. Their conservation is an important part of biodiversity conservation. One modern dragonfly species is listed as extinct, with many others currently threatened. It is now essential to increase conservation efforts towards saving these threatened species, with strategies now available for doing this. Recovery of dragonfly populations goes hand in hand with improvements to both freshwater conditions and bank vegetation quality. In contrast, some other dragonfly species have benefitted greatly from human transformation of the landscape, with artificial ponds in particular, increasing the population levels of many species. In turn, climate change is seeing many geographical range shifts. Dragonflies are variously sensitive to the health of freshwater systems, and the quality of vegetation along rivers and around ponds. Dragonflies are excellent indicators in these times of great concern over the quality of our freshwater supplies. Their wide range of sensitivities enables us to measure the extent to which freshwater ecosystems are either deteriorating or are improving when we undertake restoration. They enable us to gauge how well we are conserving freshwaters, whether ponds and lakes, streams or rivers. They are also good umbrellas for many other freshwater inhabitants, which altogether reflect the health of a freshwater system. Conservation of Dragonflies: Sentinels for Freshwater Conservation is for naturalists, citizen scientists, entomologists and conservation scientists, as well as practitioners and policy makers around the world.

Hans Christian Andersen (1805 - 1875) war ein reisefreudiger Mann. Im Frühjahr 1831 fuhr er durch Deutschland und hielt seine Eindrücke in einem Reisebuch fest. Es sind die Schönheiten der Gegend um Dresden, die ihn besonders entzückten, es war die freundliche Aufnahme »vortrefflicher Menschen«, die ihm guttat, und es war die geheimnisvolle Melancholie, die über der Sächsischen Schweiz liegt, die seiner Herzensstimmung entgegenkam. Der Reisebericht, der in der ersten deutschen Gesamtausgabe von 1847 erschien, war um zahlreiche politische, religiöse und persönliche Passagen gekürzt worden, Kürzungen, die spätere Ausgaben beibehielten. Hier liegt Andersens Reisebericht erstmals mit dem ungekürzten Text vor: in der vollständigen Fassung in Deutschland ein bislang fast unbekanntes Werk.

Seit den 70er Jahren arbeitet sie erfolgreich als bildende Künstlerin. Auslandsaufenthalte führten sie 1971 nach London und 1988 als Gast an das Istituto Svizzero in Rom. 1989 war sie Writer in Residence an der Washington University in St. Louis. 1994 hatte sie den Swiss Chair an der City University of New York inne. Seit 1988 war sie korrespondierendes Mitglied in der Deutschen Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung in Darmstadt. Erica Pedretti lebte mit ihrem Mann in La Neuveville am Bieler See. Sie zählt zu den herausragenden Persönlichkeiten der zeitgenössischen Schweizer Literatur. Am 14. Juli 2022 verstarb sie im Alter von 92 Jahren.

This book examines the development of the Irish community in Manchester, one of the most dynamic cities of nineteenth-century Britain. Based on research into a wide variety of local sources, it examines the process by which the Irish came to be blamed for all the ills of the Industrial Revolution and the ways in which they attempted to cope with a sometimes actively hostile environment. It discusses the nature and degree of residential segregation in one notable Irish district and the role of the Catholic Church as a source of spiritual comfort and the base for a dense network of mutual aid and social and cultural organisations. It also examines how the Irish community allied itself with local campaign groups and political parties and organised celebrations and processions that simultaneously expressed its evolving sense of Irishness but fitted in with local traditions and customs.
