        Emotional monasticism

        Affective piety in the eleventh-century monastery of John of Fécamp

        Medievalists have long taught that highly emotional Christian devotion, often called 'affective piety', appeared in Europe after the twelfth century and was primarily practiced by communities of mendicants, lay people and women. Emotional monasticism challenges this view. The first study of affective piety in an eleventh-century monastic context, it traces the early history of affective devotion through the life and works of the earliest known writer of emotional prayers, John of Fécamp, abbot of the Norman monastery of Fécamp from 1028-78. Exposing the early medieval monastic roots of later medieval affective piety, the book casts a new light on the devotional life of monks in Europe before the twelfth century and redefines how medievalists should teach the history of Christianity.

        Shipwrecks, gory battle scenes, cross-dressing, toxic relationships, abduction, torture (psychological and physical), comical country bumpkins, and, of course, love and poetry -Sir Philip Sidney's witty pastoral romance The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia is the classic that has it all in terms of entertainment factors. Modern readers mostly know Arcadia in its complete 'old' version, but it is the New Arcadia (published in 1590) that was the most influential and most widely imitated literary text of the sixteenth century. While preserving the basic plot - a ruler attempts to escape an alarming oracle by moving his family to the countryside and engaging in shepherd-cosplay until the arrival of two foreign princes triggers a chain of events leading to the fulfilment of the oracle - this version adds further narrative strands and introduces ambitious revisions that showcase Sidney's stylistic brilliance as a prose writer.

        This book examines the rise and fall of the aristocratic Lacy family in England, Ireland, Wales and Normandy. This involves a unique analysis of medieval lordship in action, as well as a re-imagining of the role of English kingship in the western British Isles and a rewriting of seventy-five years of Anglo-Irish history. By viewing the political landscape of Britain and Ireland from the perspective of one aristocratic family, this book produces one of the first truly transnational studies of individual medieval aristocrats. This results in an in-depth investigation of aristocratic and English royal power over five reigns, including during the tumultuous period of King John and Magna Carta. By investigating how the Lacys sought to rule their lands in four distinct realms, this book also makes a major contribution to current debates on lordship and the foundations of medieval European society.

        Martha Gellhorn: The war writer in the field and in the text

        Martha Gellhorn was the doyenne of twentieth century war correspondence. Opinionated, honest and unafraid, she covered conflicts from the Spanish Civil War to Reagan's wars in Central America in the 1980s. Martha Gellhorn: the war writer in the field and in the text is the first critical study of her Second World War fiction and journalism. Often overlooked in accounts of war literature is the writer's precise position in relation to battle and his or her resultant standing in the text. Kate McLoughlin traces Gellhorn's daring attempts to access the war zone and her constructions of the woman war correspondent in her despatches, novels, short stories and play. Drawing on unpublished letters, close attention is given to Gellhorn's rivalry with Ernest Hemingway (the two were married from 1940 to 1945) over reaching the Normandy beaches on D-Day and its textual outcome in the pages of Collier's magazine. McLoughlin goes on to examine Gellhorn's increasingly negative portrayals of the glamorous female war reporter and to suggests why such disillusionment might have set in. ;

Diese hundert Gedichte eines rollenkundigen Spötters und sprachspielverliebten Dialektikers, die fast ausnahmslos um das Mit- und Gegeneinander von Liebe und Zurückweisung, Sehnsucht und Widerwillen, Leidenschaft und Bezähmung kreisen, sind eine Neuerscheinung in der Welt der Literatur. Sie gewinnen ihren Wert nicht durch die Zuschreibung an William Shakespeare. Umgekehrt: Ihre Qualität stützt die These, dass Edward de Vere ab 1593 unter dem Pseudonym William Shakespeare publizierte.

        Antonio and Mellida was the first play by John Marston performed by the newly revived Paul's Company in 1599. Marston sought to display a variety of talents, comic, tragic, satiric and historical, advertising his own dramatic skills and the prowess of the choristers of Paul's. The play is based on incidents in the reigns of Sforza, Francesco, Galeazzo and Lodovico, who were Dukes of Milan in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Marston displays a detailed knowledge of the dramatic works of Shakespeare, Seneca, Kyd and Nashe as well as the prose of Sidney, Erasmus, Montaigne, Florio and others. This edition relates the play to a wide variety of literary contexts. It also includes a comprehensive introduction, an analysis of staging, and full commentary. The text is based on a collation of all known copies of the 1602 Quarto and is presented in a thoroughly modernised format. ;

        Als Buch im Buch, versteckt in einer anonym publizierten literarischen Anthologie des Jahres 1573, erschien die erste englische Novelle, The Adventures of Master F. I., deren virtuose Dialoge zwischen Verspieltheit und Strenge, höfischem Frost und seelischem Fieber oszillieren. Im Raffinement der Darstellung, in der virtuosen Beiläufigkeit und poetischen Dichte sind die Aventiuren unvergleichlich. Das bald vom Markt verschwundene Buch erschien zwei Jahre später in »gereinigter« Version unter dem Namen des Soldatendichters George Gascoigne. In der historisch-philologischen Analyse des Nachworts entwickelt Kurt Kreiler eine Indizienkette, die auf die Autorschaft eines großen anderen schließen läßt. Danach heißt der Verfasser der Aventiuren Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford (1550 bis 1604), der von seinen Zeitgenossen als der »Beste im Fach Komödie« gerühmt wurde und in unserer Zeit als Anwärter auf die Autorschaft Shakespeares gilt. Der Übersetzung wurde die erste Ausgabe von 1573 zugrunde gelegt. Fortunatus Infoelix, ein galanter Ritter des 16. Jahrhunderts, weilt zu Gast in einem Schloß und verliebt sich in die Schwiegertochter des Hausherrn. Lady Elynor reizt den amourösen Belagerer durch die Doppeldeutigkeit ihres Widerstands. Die Zeremonien der Liebesverschwörung werden jäh unterbrochen, als eine zweite Frau den glücklichen Unglücklichen zum Tanz verführt. Wenn sie sich anderntags Master Infoelix als verständnisvolle Freundin andient, so nur deshalb, um sein »Liebesexperiment« geschickt zu steuern …
