Youth policy, civil society and the modern Irish state

by Fred Powell, Martin Geoghegan, Margaret Scanlon, Katharina Swirak

This book, now available in paperback, explores the development of youth policy and youth work in Ireland from the mid-nineeenth century to the present day. Based on original research, funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS), it looks at the social construction of youth, the emergence of the early youth movements and the nature and scope of contemporary youth work. Key issues include: the shift from mainstream to targeted provision, the professionalisation of the sector and the increased partnership between the state and voluntary sector. A second major theme is the treatment of young people in industrial and reformatory schools, with particular reference to the findings of the Ryan Report on child abuse (2009). This is the only book which combines an exploration of the history and current scope of youth work and youth policy, and which is based on comprehensive original research. It will be essential reading for lecturers and students in youth work, social sciences, social history and related fields.

        Animal

        Poemas breves salvajes

by María José Ferrada, Ana Palmero

"Hidden in his horn he guards the secret of the jungle”. This might be as well the beginning of a novel, but it's an inspired riddle about wild animals. The illustrations in high varnish of this edition highlight the different skin textures of each animal and invites the reader to discover a new way of reading in a tactile and playful way.

Youth policy, civil society and the modern Irish state

by Fred Powell, Martin Geoghegan, Margaret Scanlon, Katharina Swirak

Should citizens be allowed to propose legislation? Should they even be allowed to recall politicians if they do not live up to their expectations? These questions and many others form the subject of this timely book. In addition to presenting an up to date review of the empirical literature, Direct democracy provides a survey of the political philosophers who have theorised about this subject. It is the central tenet in the book that the demand for direct democracy is a consequence of the demand for more consumer choices. Like consumers want individualised products, so voters want individualised and bespoke policies. Described by the BBC as "The world's leading expert on referendums", the author, Matt Qvortrup, draws on his experience as a political advisor to the US State Department, as well as his extensive academic knowledge of direct democracy.

        Antonia va al río

        by Diego Sanchez

The girl and Antonia have to go, and so does their family. But not just theirs, others’ families have to part. ¿Why? Something has happened, is not explicit in the book, but is clear they all have to leave. The kids have their pets and the adults all what they need to navigate, get across the jungle and find a new home. But as it’s usual in such contexts, when one has to migrate, one loses and one gain; and this is what this book is about. Dipacho uses his brush, his colors, and his narrative to offer a story lived by many but very little known in the flesh.

        Children’s rights in crisis

        Multidisciplinary, transnational, and comparative perspectives

by Salvador Santino F. Regilme Jr.

This book rigorously investigates the contemporary state of children's rights and the multifaceted challenges facing children, uncovering the complexities at their core. In 1989, the United Nations introduced the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), ratified by 196 nations, promising a world where children's rights would reign supreme. In practice, however, realising these rights proves intricate and often precarious. Policies may shine on paper, but their implementation grapples with the challenges posed by global governance structures, national strategies, and local factors. Over three decades since the CRC's inception, this book scrutinises the true efficacy of international commitments, shedding light on underexplored issues and revealing shortcomings in both discourse and actions. With diverse, interdisciplinary perspectives, it recognises the profound influence of global and transnational forces in generating outcomes that impact children's rights and welfare.

by María José Ferrada, Andrés López Martínez

Disappearances, ecological disasters and humanitarian crisis are most of the time less important topics in the news —or in our everyday life— compared to movie premieres or the result of football matches. The relevance of this matters, require our urgent reflection.

        The Nest of Magpies

        by Hai Fei

This is a very realistic original picture book. The author turns his attention to the northwest of China, where strong winds and sands dominate the sky, and tells a touching story that depicts the scene that "when the sand advances, humans retreat; when humans advance, the sand retreats." The hero of the book is a boy called Shawa, who is good friends with the magpies on a white poplar. He has been curious about the magpies' nest and wanted to know what it looks like inside, but he has never had a chance. Finally, his curiosity is satisfied after the white poplar is destroyed by a sandstorm and then falls. Surprisingly, there is water, the source of life, inside the nest where magpies fly away and their eggs are broken. Nature gives Shawa a life lesson with its double face of tenderness and grimness.   The book, with its concise and powerful narrative and liberal painting style, integrates paintings with texts, in which the scenery of the northwest, the mighty power of nature, and the simplicity and warmth of personal relationships have all been vividly expressed. It makes readers consider the relationship between humanity and nature from a small but large perspective: humans are both small and great in a harsh natural environment. Only by respecting nature and learning to live in harmony with nature can we have a peaceful and happy life. This book is a beautiful hymn to nature and humanity.

        Let's Hold Hands, Sister

by Oksana Lushchevska (Author), Anna Surgan (Illustrator)

Ten-year-old sisters Vita and Zlata share their dreams with each other: they would like to go to the forest, swim in the river, lie in the grass, and look at the clouds. They also want to learn some spells so that peace reigns on Earth, but magic exists only in fairy tales... This kind and gentle story tells that there is something more powerful in life than spells: being close to your loved ones and holding hands with them. And imagine being  friends with a funny poodle like Buka, that shows to everyone how to laugh and love! This book is a bright and honest reflection of children's confusion during one of life's harshest experiences: war. This warm play was written in the form of a dialogue to be recited. Thus the text can be read or acted out with children at home, in classes, in school theaters or theater groups. Readers can even stage a play online for relatives and friends who are not nearby!   From 9 to 12 years, 590 words Rightsholders: Nargis Gafurova and Anna Tiurina, crocus.publishers@gmail.com

13 keys to understanding yourself, your environment and your relationships

        by Anna Prosvetova

This is the story of all women facing problems of personal life, self-awareness, communication with others. It seems that today there shouldn`t be problems with obtaining certain knowledge by young people. In practice, this should mean that today's teenagers should grow up informed, and therefore not repeat the mistakes their parents made. So why, then, in the 21st century, the problems of teenagers have not disappeared anywhere? Why do girls and boys get into "bad" companies the same way? Why do underage girls still "suddenly" get pregnant? Why do modern children suffer from depression? Having mastered this book, your child will understand that he/she is an individual, will learn to respect himself/herself, will easily find the right friends, will be able to achieve his dreams and plan his own happy future. This publication is recommended not only to teenagers, but also to their parents, because practice shows that many adults would also learn about the Keys that unlock the door to the world of Happiness.
