        Ukraїner. Ukrainian Insider 2

by Bogdan Logvynenko (idea), Daria Titarova, Kseniya Chykunova (texts)

Our team continues to study Ukraine, the results of which we share with you. This book is a story of the Ukrainian land, told by the Ukrainian people and filmed by the Ukraїner team. It was not enough to travel around all regions of Ukraine just one time to get to know it. Therefore, during 2019-2021, we drove the second expedition circle and brought even more stories about our incredible country and its inhabitants. Like all Ukraїner materials, these are stories of real people and the places they take care of, with dialogues and without directing. Traveling around the country, we want to capture it for every Ukrainian and for the whole world. And with the beginning of the annexation war started by Russia, this book has another important goal: to show Ukraine as it was before February 24, to keep it in our memory so that after the victory it could be rebuilt, and made even better.

        Von Anderswo und anderen Orten

        by Anselm Pahnke, Sönke Schmidt

Allein in Afrika" weiter. Ground Floor

Where do you have to go to find yourself?

by Camilla Costa (writer) / Guilherme Athayde (illustrator)

Starting from the question “Where do you have to go to find yourself”, GROUND FLOOR is a gorgeously illustrated book that reflects on the act of moving and leaving a home. The illustrations by Gui Athayde depict a person, or a body, in transition, with sparse poetic text by Camilla Costa, print in both English and Portuguese. Here physical movement is grounded by internal stasis; or longing for a home that once was. The illustrations consume the pages in blues and reds, or sometimes get stripped back to leave only the text hand lettered and running parallel in both languages. MEET THE AUTHOR: Guy Athayde will be signning books during the Frankfurt Buchmesse:21.10.2023 | 16:00 - 16:40 h CEST@ Booth 4.1/B85

        Acqua Alta

The adventures of a little tourist in the fantastic Venezia, a silent comic book

        by Nik Neves (author)

Acqua Alta is a silent comic book created during a trip to Venice, where the author Nik Neves drew the places he wandered through. There, he imagined a little girl in the scenes, living adventures that can be enjoyed by kids, their parents and everybody that likes Venice and getting lost while traveling. The little character detaches herself from her tourist group and wanders through less touristic places in The Floating City: the "Calle della Morte," a mysterious palace, cruise ships, a dead dove in the center of the Campo. The second edition of Acqua Alta will premiere at the International Frankfurt Book Fair. It includes a presentation in portuguese/english by the author, is printed in two special colors (petrol green and brick red) on special paper, has patterned endpapers, handmade bookbinding and carton cover.

        Asia

        Sketched Journeys

        by Salvatore Santuccio

Through the colors captured live by the author, the book is a journey from Istanbul to Beijing that becomes a path of knowledge of a still far and brand new world. Asia is a lived experience impressed on paper with drawings soaked with the smell of spices, the smog of thousands cars, the sandy wind of the desert, or the Nepalese incense smokes. And the scene is made lively and moving by the people, whose clothes, kindness and traditions hide years of history.

        Hammaming in the Sham

A Journey Through the Turkish Baths of Damascus, Aleppo and Beyond

        by Richard Boggs

Legend has it that Damascus once had 365 hammams or 'Turkish baths': one for each day of the year. Originally part of an ancient Roman tradition, hammams were absorbed by Islam to such an extent that many became almost annexes to nearby mosques. For centuries, hammams were an integral part of community life, with some 50 hammams surviving in Damascus until the 1950s. Since then, however, with the onslaught of modernization programmes and home bathrooms, many have been demolished; fewer than 20 Damascene working hammams survive today. In Hammaming in the Sham, Richard Boggs travels the length and breadth of modern Syria, documenting the traditions of bathing in Damascus, Aleppo and elsewhere, and his encounters with Syrians as they bathe. In his portrayal of life in the hammams he reveals how these ancient institutions cater for both body and soul, and through his conversations with the bathers within, he provides insights into the grass roots of contemporary Syrian society. Approximately 100 colour photographs accompany the text, portraying the traditional neighbourhoods of Damascus and Aleppo, and the almost religious feel of the hammams. The author's intimate portraits of the baths' employees and bathers show a unique side of Syria rarely exposed to the outside world.

        Spanish Peaks

        Land & Legends

by Conger Beasley Jr , Barbara Sparks

The Spanish Peaks stand alone some distance from the main cordillera of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, south of Pueblo, Colorado. The towering twin mountains have served as beacons for Native Americans, Spaniards, trappers, traders, travellers on the Santa Fe trail, miners, and homesteaders. "Spanish Peaks" shares the legends the mountains have inspired and tells of the peoples drawn to the peaks' shelter. Author Conger Beasley Jr and photographer Barbara Sparks portray the people who struggle to sustain their lives here and document traditional events such as the Ute Bear Dance and Holy Week among the penitentes of Huerfano Church. Beasley's vivid writing and Sparks's photographs offer tribute to a rugged, mysterious place.
