Cartageo Antique maps - Hand made reproductions

World, Continents, States, Regions maps, City views and plans - Antique maps

        by Cartageo.com

Cartageo’s handicraftsmen  has been recreating antique prints whose accuracy to the originals results in exquisite and prestigious artistic creations. These beautiful and interesting subjects are important for the historical and geographical information they offer.  They embrace various historical periods in which man’s evolution has enabled him to widen his horizons by learning more and more about the surrounding environment, its representation and measurements. These works also have a remarkable aesthetic effect making them perfect for homes and offices where they may be admired  and be the subject of interesting conversation.  The accuracy in the production of these works is not simply a slogan. The handmade realization employs the same techniques used in the past for printing and mounting. The printing of the subjects employs the use of copper plates upon a manual press thus producing one of the main characteristics of our work: engraving. The final result allows you to feel with your fingers the texture of the material, follow the lines, writings and figures that make up the actual work. The high quality product is made even more precious because of the choice in the paper we use:  it is 100% pure cotton paper, (the same that was used centuries ago), and it is mounted on pure cotton canvas. This process allows the works to be folded easily and thus can be better preserved. The mounting on canvas is followed by an aging process which using only natural substances. The “trimming” you find on the borders is the last touch giving at the maps the antique look. Upon request the works can be enriched even more by watercoloring done by masters in the field. Each subject is accompanied by a thorough historical background that facilitates the reading of the map as well as transmiting historical and cultural aspects of a given context.     Cartageo’s catalog includes approximately 180 subjects spanning from the 16th to the 18th centuries, as well as some examples nearer our own times. It includes, however, even more antique subjects like the “Tavola Peutingeriana” dating back to Roman times, circa 350A.D.. The stylistic differences varying from one epoch to the next are clear:  one of the most evident is the tendency to represent a given subject with greater precision, or more realistic precision, thanks to the progress made over the centuries in the developing and perfecting of instruments of measure.  Other differences can be found in the decorations adorning the maps or other subjects.  From 1500 until 1700 there was in fact an evolution resulting in the progressive inclusion of scroll ornaments and ornamental figures in order to embellish the works and give them a stronger visual effect. After the 19th century there was instead a reversal of this trend: a return to the essentials and a refinement in technique.  There are not only “temporal” or stylistic differences, but geographic ones depending on the depicted subject (world maps or planispheres, continents, countries, regions, cities, etc.).  Cartageo also offers numerous other subjects that vary from panoramic city views to scenes of long ago pastimes to religious representations.         A short video of the maps making process https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HzCEYMtHmw      You can find the CATALOG 2020 of Cartageo Antique Maps Reproduction in the "VIEW CONTENT SAMPLE" (part 1) and in the "SUPPORTING INFORMATION" (part 2)      Cartageo produce and sell the maps.

        The Empress Emerald

        by J.G. Harlond

Leo Kazan is an orphan (or so he believes) and a talented linguist. He is also a thief, attracted like a magpie to anything that glitters. Leo becomes the protege of a high-ranking member of the British Raj who turns him into a spy. From an early age. Leo is involved in international espionage and diamond smuggling which takes him from India to Britain and Russia. But the most meaningful time in his life is when he meets an innocent English girl, Davina Dymond, in London. As the drums of war reverberate around the world for a second time, Leo begins to understand his personal history and realises the importance of his Indian background, and the true meaning of Home Rule. Davina, trapped in war-torn Spain, turns to crime to survive. Both must unshackle themselves from those who seek to manipulate them before they can find true happiness - and each other.

Firearms of the American West, Vol. 2, 1866-1894 (v. 2)

by Louis A Garavaglia , Charles G Worman

Prior to the building of the transcontinental railroad, the area between the Missouri River and the West coast was largely uninhabited by settlers, but as this vast area became accessible to them, and as they pushed westward, the problems of violence on the frontier increased. Bears, wolves, and Indians no longer posed the greatest threat to pioneers; white clashed with white, the lawful with the lawless. And, of course, firearms played a major role in this drama. This is the second volume of a two-part study of firearms in the nineteenth-century American West. It traces the development of the firearm from the close of the Civil War to the beginning of its modern era. Within this period, the authors have discussed all the important military and civilian firearms used in the settling of the West, as well as the guns favoured by Indians. Over five hundred photographs illustrate the weapons and the famous and now-forgotten men and women who used them.

Treasures and Curiosities from Britain's Country Houses

        by Elizabeth Drury (author)

This intriguing book, published incollaboration with the Historic Houses Association, brings together objects that are of special significance to the people who live and have lived in Britain’s country houses. Some are quite humble, of no value away from where they are kept and special in their own way; others are objects of extreme rarity and historical importance. They are treasured possessions, giving a glimpse of the people, their characters and tastes and interests, to whom they belonged. Each one has a connection to an individual or a family. Each one has a story to be told.  They come from historic houses all over Britain that are open to visitors and whose owners are members of the Historic Houses Association. They range from Tipoo Sahib’s hat at Belmont to the parrot (now stuffed) given by Disraeli to Lady Bradford at Weston Park. They include pieces of jewellery, letters, sporting paraphernalia, old black and white photographs, and children’s toys and fancy dress. Among the houses with connections to famous people are Stratfield Saye, Hampshire, bought for the Duke of Wellington by a grateful nation, and Deene Park, Northamptonshire, home of the Earl of Cardigan of the Charge of the Light Brigade. Other houses include: Abbotsford, Roxburghshire, built by the writer Sir Walter Scott; Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, seat of the dukes of Northumberland; Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, memorabilia from the Duke of Marlborough and Sir Winston Churchill; Bowood House, Wiltshire, where Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen; Burghley House, Lincolnshire, built for William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I; Capesthorne Hall, Cheshire, items associated with boxing and acting; Dalmeny House, South Queensferry, with its collection of Napoleonic items; Dorney Court, home for generations of the Palmer family; Kelmscott Manor, Oxfordshire, home of William Morris; Lennoxlove, East Lothian, with connections to Mary, Queen of Scots, and an important event in World War II.
