        Fast Facts: Bladder Disorders

by Alex Slack, Diane K Newman, Alan J Wein

The term ‘bladder disorders’ encompasses a number of lower urinary tract dysfunctions and abnormalities that negatively affect quality of life. Some can cause considerable morbidity and even mortality. Three internationally recognized authors with different areas of expertise – a leading British urogynecologist, a chief of urology listed as one of America’s “Best Doctors”, and an American continence expert – have ensured that this second edition of Fast Facts: Bladder Disorders is internationally relevant to the non-specialist working within a multidisciplinary team. Based on robust evidence and clinical experience, and supported by superb illustrations, this fact-filled handbook covers everything you will need to recognize the symptoms and signs of a wide range of bladder disorders from urinary incontinence to hematuria to UTIs. It also provides an excellent overview of basic pathophysiology, and will help practitioners initiate screening and assessment and, where appropriate, treatment.

Targeted Therapies for Renal Cell Carcinoma

        by Ronald M Bukowski

Renal cell carcinoma accounts for approximately 3% of malignancies, and is the seventh leading cause of death in the USA. There has been significant progress in the understanding and management of this tumor over the past 10 years, and the emerging surgical and systemic therapy strategies have revolutionized its management. The focus of the current book is therapies for patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma, in particular, the recently emerged treatment modalities that target relevant biologic pathways.

Clinical Applications of Renin–Angiotensin System Inhibitors

        by Michel Burnier

Several newly identified components of the renin–angiotensin system have provided new insights into the role of the system in cardiovascular and renal physiology. The recent discovery of the renin and pro-renin receptor, the characterization of the ACE-2 enzyme and the identification of several angiotensin II receptors have opened new research avenues in the field. This book provides an overview of related therapeutic approaches such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, direct renin inhibition and explores therapies involving RAS blockers alone and in combination approaches. Separate chapters address the renin–angiotensin system in the context of the heart, kidney and brain. The last chapter of this book addresses new therapeutic strategies involving the renin–angiotensin system, such as agonists of the angiotensin II AT2 receptor or agonists of the ACE-2 enzyme. This book addresses current approaches and gives useful insight into the new approaches that are being uncovered as understanding of the system continues to improve.

        Contemporary Management of Overactive Bladder

        by Christopher Chapple

The five chapters in this book provide a review of the epidemiology of overactive bladder and an overview of patient evaluation and the existing guidelines. The book addresses lifestyle modification (often ignored by clinicians), therapeutic options and current ‘gold standard’ pharmacotherapy (namely antimuscarinics). There is also a focus on second-line treatments for patients who fail to respond to lifestyle changes and pharmacotherapy, such as sacral nerve stimulation and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation. The book provides a very practical overview of available approaches and contrasts the pros and cons of therapy, highlighting cost–benefit issues.

Polycystic Kidney Disease: from Bench to Bedside

by Vincent H Gattone, Robert L Bacallao

Recent years have seen advances in our understanding the molecular cell biology, signaling and pathogenesis of one of the most common life-threatening genetic diseases – polycystic kidney disease (PKD). This multichapter work from international experts opens with chapters exploring the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive PKD. There follows a series of chapters reflecting clinical presentations and complications of PKD, including areas such as pain management and PKD-associated hypertension. This through work concludes with coverage of clinical trials and preclinical studies underway and represents an important reference work reflecting the state-of-the-art in understanding and treating these challenging conditions.

Novel Insights into Urinary Tract Infections and their Management

        by Tetsuro Matsumoto

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common diseases that have a considerable impact on the quality of life of patients, and high social and economic burden. However, more evidence on basic and clinical aspects of UTIs is still needed, and big challenges remain – notably the increase in antimicrobial-resistant strains that are causative agents for UTIs, and where appropriate use of antimicrobial agents has a crucial role. The seven chapters of this book tackle key issues in UTI management, such as problems in diagnosis, new diagnostic approaches and management in pediatric UTIs, and the new concept of proper use of antimicrobials.

        Fast Facts: Prostate Cancer

by Roger S Kirby, Manish I. Patel

Prostate cancer is unusual among solid tumors in that the majority of affected men die with, rather than of, the disease. This presents many challenges to healthcare professionals and patients in terms of deciding if, when and how to intervene in order to control tumor growth and spread, thereby extending survival but without compromising quality of life. This is the ninth edition of Fast Facts: Prostate Cancer since 1996, testament to the rapid changes in the field and the steadily improving outlook for patients. This new edition provides many key updates: - the Gleason grade grouping, which has valuable prognostic value - nomograms to evaluate risk - our rapidly expanding understanding of the genetics and underlying pathogenesis of prostate cancer and the development of genomic tests to help identify those at greatest risk of developing clinically significant disease - the continuing debate about the role of PSA in the screening, detection and monitoring of prostate cancer - advances in imaging techniques, particularly multiparametric MRI, which is improving the accuracy of biopsy and reducing the numbers of negative biopsies - the roles of drugs, surgery and radiotherapy in the treatment of prostate cancer at different stages, and our ever-improving understanding of when and how best to intervene, aided by improving understanding of the risk factors for disease progression. Primarily intended for primary care providers, specialist nurses, junior doctors and allied healthcare professionals, this highly readable resource provides a comprehensive overview of prostate cancer, enabling fully informed discussions with patients about this complex disease.
