      These Englands

      A conversation on national identity

      by Edited by Arthur Aughey

The term 'conversation' is one of today's jargon terms. This book explores in depth what conversation means in national terms. Its premise is that to be English is to participate in a conversation about the country's history, politics, culture and society. The conversation changes, of course, but there is also continuity which illustrates a distinct tradition. It is a conversation, the book argues, which requires the plural notion of these Englands rather than the singularity of this England. Englishness, then, is the tone, register and idiom of it subject matters, its anxieties and certainties, differences and commonalities. The book explores the English conversation through historical, political, literary and popular voices and tries to identify the character of contemporary Englishness.

The politics of constitutional nationalism in Northern Ireland, 1932–70

      Between grievance and reconciliation

      by Christopher Norton

In the changed political landscape of Northern Ireland, where all major political parties with a nationalist agenda are now reconciled to the use of peaceful and constitutional means to achieve their objectives, this book presents a timely analysis of the constitutional nationalist tradition in Northern Ireland in the period leading up to the outbreak of the Troubles. The first book on constitutional nationalism to appear in over a decade, this new and incisive work based on extensive primary sources and existing secondary literature, maps the history of the campaigns of nationalist parties and organisations to redress the grievances of Northern Ireland's Catholics and bring partition to an end. It offers a critical reappraisal of these campaigns and it assesses the outcomes and consequences of the political strategies pursued by an array of nationalist parties and groups.

      Small states in world politics

The story of small state survival, 1648-2016

      by Matthias Maass

What is the story behind the paradoxical survival of small and weak states in a world of great powers and crude power politics? And what explains the dramatic rise and fall in the number of states overtime, following no consistent trend and not showing an immediately obvious direction or pattern? The answers lie at the system-level: Small states survival is shaped by the international states system. Small state survival and proliferation is determined first and foremost by features of and dynamics created at the states system. As the states system changes and evolves the chances for small states to survive or proliferate change as well. In fact, a quantitive investigation confirms this, showing that over the course of more than 3½ centuries, the number of small states did fluctuate widely and at times dramatically.

      The state as master

Gender, state formation and commercialisation in urban Sweden, 1650–1780

      by Maria Ågren, Pamela Sharpe

We tend to think of state service as the typical male form of work. However, this notion does not do justice to the early history of states and their servants, and it obscures the role of women and gender entirely. Teasing out these entanglements, The state as master shows how early modern state formation was subsidized by ordinary people's work and how, at the same time, the changing relationship between state authorities and families shaped the understanding of work and gender. This book is both a fascinating story of the hardships of customs official families in small Swedish towns and an innovative analysis of state formation and its short- and long-term effects.

      The new nationalism

      by Sivamohan Valluvan

How does the current nationalist moment within British political culture, most acutely evidenced in the recent Brexit result, capture such a broad cross-section of constituencies, cutting across various political traditions and ideological divisions? Valluvan and Rhodes propose a Cultural Studies and sociology of racism-oriented theorisation of contemporary nationalist ascendancy which addresses this question head-on, by both mapping and theorising the ideological multiplicity that is central to the contemporary ascendancy of nationalist politics. This timely book, which comes immediately on the back of broader ructions of the post-Brexit and Trump context, sets out a highly original terrain of theorisation regarding contemporary nationalism. Its discussion of prominent public intellectuals, and platforms including periodicals, broadsheet editorials and think-tank reports, ensures this book will appeal to a general academic readership.
