The craft of writing in sociology

Developing the argument in undergraduate essays and dissertations

        by Andrew Balmer, Anne Murcott

The craft of writing in sociology is an indispensable companion for students studying sociology and related disciplines, such as politics and human geography, as well as courses which draw upon sociological writing, such as nursing, social psychology or health studies. It demystifies the process of constructing coherent and powerful arguments, starting from an essay's opening paragraphs, building evidence and sequencing key points in the middle, through to pulling together a punchy conclusion. It gives a clear and helpful overview of the most important grammatical rules in English, and provides advice on how to solve common problems experienced in writing, including getting rid of waffle, overcoming writer's block and cutting an essay down to its required length. Using examples from essays written by sociology students at leading universities, the book shows what they have done well, what could be done better and how to improve their work using the techniques reviewed.

        El Camino by Miguel Delibes

        by Catherine Davies, Jeremy Squires

        Upon entering the Royal Spanish Academy in 1975, Miguel Delibes delivered an address which reclaimed El camino (1950) for the emerging Green movement. With a blend of hilarity, satire, pathos and tragedy, Delibes artfully explores the process of crossing boundaries in pursuit of maturity and social advancement, whilst also implying that real education is the unfolding of the human heart among friends and sweethearts within a shared social and natural space. This new annotated version of the text comprises an introductory essay discussing green issues, attitudes towards the Spanish peasantry under Franco, and the function of the novel's subtly orchestrated comedy. It also contains explanatory notes on the text, discussion topics and an extensive Spanish-English glossary. This edition is intended primarily for English-speaking students of Spanish literature and culture at school and university. ;

        by Dr. Bob Davis

Fifteen essays for anyone in any profession or academic level, Your Writing Well studies every aspect of the writing process, providing faster means to better products than do narrowly focused trade handbooks and academic texts. Not marketed for dummies, Your Writing Well assumes readers have the smarts to follow mature common-sense guidance, grasp examples, and thus compensate for their existing lack of knowledge of what to do, how and why to do it, and where. Informed not by needless prohibitions but by relaxed, reassuring balances of freedom and prudent regulation, Your Writing Well is a comprehensive cure for all writers’ ailments and deficiencies.

        Sweet Rosa

        by Kingsley Osei, David Asimeng

Sweet Rosa is a picture book which details the brave stance of a young African-American woman named Rosa Parks who refused to give up her seat to a white person on bus in 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama. Ms. Parks' actions led to the infamous Montgomery bus boycott and helped establish the civil rights movement led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  The bold and courageous act of Ms. Parks, Dr. King and thousands of boycotters and civil rights advocates eventually pushed the Supreme Court to declare segregation on buses unconstitutional, helping to put racial discrimination to rest. This book takes young readers on an historic, illustrious journey through this staple event and how it has forever shaped the racial outlook of equality for adults and children alike in today's society.

Korean Grammar in Use_Beginning (English ver.)

        by Ahn Jean-myung, Lee Kyung-ah, Han Hoo-young

This book is the culmination of educational know-how and systematic grammar organization acquired by the three authors from their experience actually teaching Korean to foreigners in the classroom. In focusing strictly on Korean grammar, this series represents a departure from most current integrated teaching materials, allowing foreign learners to more easily concentrate on grammar in their study of Korean. The authors have included real dialogues and illustrations to make the study of Korean more interesting, especially for those students who have heretofore felt Koran grammar to be difficult. Further, this series equally serves as a general Korean grammar reference that can be used by Korean language instructors both in Korea and abroad who regularly experience the difficulty of teaching Korean grammar first-hand. • Collects the introductory grammar points normally taught in Levels 1 and 2 at most universities affiliated and private language institutes. • Makes it easy for learners to locate those grammar patterns they find the most confusing by providing comparisons of patterns similar in meaning and usage. This way, learners can not only clarify the differences between similar patterns, but also study how they are used differently depending on the situation. • Lets the learner confirm the usage of target grammar points by illustrating how they are used in real conversation. The examples presented are not simply sentences constructed for the purpose of illustrating grammar, but rather examples of how the grammar points are actually used in real life. • Includes special sections on particularly tricky grammar points to allow learners to acquire a more accurate and natural-sounding command of Korean. Further, by presenting a variety of grammatical patterns along with both practice exercises and graphic illustrations, learners can approach the study of Korean grammar with renewed interest.

Easy-to-Read Chinese Short Stories, Book 1

by April Zhang and Jeff Pepper

This is the first book in the series that is for Chinese learners and by Chinese learners.   Early in 2021, Chinese learners worldwide were invited to participate in the first MSL Master Chinese Writing contest. Entries were limited to using 320 unique Chinese characters. Out of 82 submissions, 17 of them were ranked the highest in a public vote on Twitter. These top-ranked works are included in this book, a wonderful collection of very short stories, poems and a mini play.   The 17 authors were from eight different regions and countries. Some were younger; some older. Some were still studying in schools; some were working professionals. Some had not studied Chinese for long; Some had put in many years of time and effort. Most of them were learning Chinese in a non-Chinese speaking environment. Most of them were learning Chinese as a second or a third language. Despite all their differences, they shared the passion for Chinese and they were brought together in this Chinese Writing Contest. Together, they had created worlds that were full of love, desire and ambition.   From these entries, you’ll see that their Chinese language skills are varied. In their hands, the 320 characters were like a sheet of loose sand, some made a cute figurine; some made a magnificent castle; some made a powerful computer chip. Some writings were lyrical and simple, easy to understand; some used more literary language to present a complex picture. This unevenness, this natural spectrum often found in any Chinese classes, demonstrates necessary stages in learning progress. As a result, this book can be appreciated by both beginner students and advanced students.   Don’t consider this book as a magnum opus. Instead, appreciate the sparkling minds and original thoughts from all these burgeoning authors. Their writing careers did not stop at 320 Chinese characters. Some of them may shine in the literary world in the future. We’ll be glad to claim the credit that we have had the first glimpse.   Also, you may not like all 17 of them. That’s the way it is for everything. It’s like listening to radio. Different people prefer different songs. If you can be inspired by some, this book serves its purpose.   A sample story and a free audio book are available here:  https://www.mslmaster.com/index.php/chinese-textbooks/easy-to-read-series

Easy-to-Read Chinese Short Stories, Book 2

by April Zhang and Carlton Cash

This is the second book in the series that is for Chinese learners and by Chinese learners.   Since 2021, MSL Master has invited Chinese language learners worldwide to participate in an annual event, Chinese Writing Contest. Entries are limited to using 320 Chinese characters only.   In 2022, 58 entries were received. After a public vote on Twitter, the best 14 were included in this book.   These are interesting stories and moving poems. Family, friendship and love are the main themes. The presence of nature is prominent. An element of inexplicable phenomena is also felt.   The authors were from seven countries, Malaysia, China, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. The oldest one was 70 years old, while the youngest one only 13. They shared a passion for the Chinese language and the love of a good challenge!   Their abilities of moulding these 320 characters were varied. While some were skilful, others were still feeling their ways and trying inventive combinations. While some relied on literary language, others preferred using simple expressions to express deep meanings.   Because of its unique mixture of texts, this book has something for evereyone, regardless whether you are beginners or advanced Chinese language learners.   Free audio and a sample story are available here: https://www.mslmaster.com/index.php/chinese-textbooks/easy-to-read-series

        Advanced Learner`s Persian Dictionary

A New Teaching and Learning Aid

        by Sayyed Mostafa Assi, PhD

This corpus-based dictionary is designed as an aid for the advanced learners of Persian to master the meaning and usage of the most common words of contemporary Persian. The entries contain different types of information such as the formal and colloquial pronunciation of the headwords, their grammatical category, related derivations, collocations and idiomatic expressions. They are defined with simple and clear definitions using only 2800 words of basic Persian vocabulary, familiar to the advanced learners. Real examples extracted from a huge corpus (Persian Linguistic Database: PLDB) support the definitions and show how they are used in everyday language. Special graphical symbols readily show relative frequencies of the headwords which are often illustrated by pictures next to them and are occasionally referred to color illustrations in the appendix section. Several subject lists such as the limited defining vocabulary, common verbs with their infinitive, present and past stems, numbers, most frequent personal names for girls and boys, historical and geographical names are also included in the back matter as appendices.   The dictionary is published in printed and electronic format.

        Multilingual Perspectives on Translanguaging

        by Jeff MacSwan

This book brings together a broad, interdisciplinary group of leading scholars to critically assess a recent proposal within translanguaging theory called deconstructivism: the view that discrete or ‘named’ languages do not exist. Contributors explore important topics in relation to the deconstructivist turn in translanguaging, including epistemology, language ideology, bilingual linguistic competence, codeswitching, bilingual first language acquisition, the neurolinguistics of bilingualism, the significance of language naming to Indigenous language reclamation efforts, implications for bilingual education and language rights, and the effects of translanguaging on immersion programs for endangered languages. Contributing authors converge on support for a multilingual perspective on translanguaging which affirms the pedagogical and conceptual aims of translanguaging but rejects deconstructivism. The book makes a valuable contribution to the development of translanguaging theory and will be required reading for scholars and students interested in one of the most vibrant and vital debates in contemporary applied linguistics.

        Language Teachers Studying Abroad

        Identities, Emotions and Disruptions

        by Gary Barkhuizen

This book focuses on the study-abroad experiences of pre-service and in-service language teachers and language teacher educators. The diverse contributions to this volume provide readers with a deep understanding of what this mobility means for individuals and the language teaching and learning communities they encounter and return to post-sojourn. Considering the broad variability of study-abroad programs and arrangements, as well as the multidimensional, complex nature of study-abroad social, geographical and digital environments, the chapters discuss the teachers’ psychological experiences in cognitive, affective and social terms. Readers will discover the effect of mobility on identity, beliefs, practices, self-efficacy, agency, self-confidence, independence and personal growth, as well as how transitions across borders can result in feelings of self-doubt, anxiety and insecurity. This is essential reading for language teacher educators, mentors and supervisors, managers of study-abroad programs and researchers working in the fields of study abroad, international education and language teacher education.

        Korean Culture in 100 Keywords

by Cho Yong-hee, Han Yumi, Tcho Hye-young

The 100 keywords for this book have been selected through several rounds of surveys with the students at the Korean Cultural Center in Paris, France. The 100 facts address extensive sectors. The facts have been selected because they not only help French and global learners have an overall understanding of the state of Korea, but also represent the background knowledge necessary to study essential words and grammar in learning Korean from various aspects including culture, history, tradition and society. The 100 keywords thus chosen serve as the topic of each subject. This book has a total of 100 subjects, largely divided in six themes so that learners can easily search the subject they would like to know. The six themes are: Theme 1: Symbolic Icons (10 Subjects) Theme 2: Food, Clothing and Shelter (12 Subjects) Theme 3: Geography and Tourism (21 Subjects) Theme 4: Society & Daily Life (19 Subjects) Theme 5: History and Religion (20 Subjects) Theme 6: Arts and Culture (18 Subjects) Each subject consists of two pages. On the upper left side is a photo that can explain the subject at a glance. Under the photo is a Korean text that introduces contents that must be learned regarding the subject. In order to help the learning, two questions are added to check the learner’s understanding of the text. The answers are provided in the appendices at the end of this book. On the upper right side is the English translation of the Korean text. The translation will serve for learners to measure their level of Korean proficiency in terms of understanding; in addition, it will satisfy the need for Korean learners who have long wanted to have a bilingual textbook. On the bottom is the English translation of each Words and Expressions section to help readers understand the Korean text. Small photos that are relevant to each subject are added to provide greater enjoyment.
