Witches, townswomen, penitents. Her-stories from Gdansk
by Michal Slubowski
Description
How much do we know about the former Gdank women? Do we know the fate of Elżbieta Koopman-Heweliusz? Do we know who was called the Baltic Mermaid and who the penitents were?
The book reveals from the darkness of history the fate of many Gdańsk women: nuns, servants, scientists, prostitutes, artists, researchers and alleged witches. It also shows the background of the era related to work, health, social status and fashion.
The last chapter is devoted to contemporary Gdańsk women who, professionally or privately, care for the heritage of Gdańsk and create the identity of their city.

The strength of Michał Ślubowski's book lies in the choice of a herstoric perspective, which has so far been in vain in Gdańsk historiography. It presents the figures of selected women, more or less famous, who lived and died, worked and loved in old Gdańsk. It is also a history of manners, traditions and coping with adversities. Moreover, Ślubowski has an extraordinary skill of narration, telling stories about difficult times and often dramatic choices, thanks to which Witches ... are read in one breath. Such a successful publishing debut only whets the appetite for the next books by this author, which I will be waiting impatiently for.
