Description
Abey Staughton is apprenticed to the 'guvnor', a wheelwright and carpenter in Nether Olston, a small village in rural Oxfordshire in the years before the First World War. The incidents in his daily life include falling asleep after haymaking and cider with Eva, who adores him, and Sally, who is serious about him, which leads to trouble; taking a turn as chariot-driver, to rescue Sally from a bull; and working with farm stock , timber and tools, as gradually he absorbs the skills of his trade, until the advent of war takes him away.

Reviews
‘Fortunately there are a few writers today who can capture the essence of country life as it used to be. Thomas Hudson has done just that. Hudson tells his leisurely tale with humour and detail that could only come from complete familiarity with the life he describes. The scent of freshly planed wood wafts from every page.’The Countryman
