Author Biography
Trained at the Slade School of Fine Art and at the Courtauld Institute of Art under Anthony Blunt, Philippa Abrahams is an artist, an art conservator, a museum education consultant and teacher, and an expert on historic materials and painting and drawing techniques. She has made a speciality of trying to understand by doing rather than theorizing. She has contributed to several television and radio programmes, advising on techniques and materials and demonstrating the working methods of artists including Michelangelo, Titian, Seurat and Whistler. In her first book, Beneath the Surface: The Making of Paintings (Frances Lincoln, 2007), Philippa Abrahams explored the story of the techniques and materials of Western art.
