On an outing to the Grunewald they find a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy, who they call Ronny. Auntie Eva explains to them that Ronny is an expensive pedigree dog and that they need to find her proper owner. Together with Philip and their friend Mark, Elli and Idi track down a gang of thieves, who steal dogs for illegal dog races. Should it not be easy to put a stop to that for two talented witches? Not if the boss of the thieves is a witch herself. A witch, who, just like Elli, can violate the code of honour without losing her power. Together the children find out, that the dog thieving boss is Gerlinde Sauter the twin sister of Elli’s terrible teacher Gesine Sauter. Gerlinde refuses to give Ronny’s mum, Re, back to Elli. It comes to a final showdown between these two powerful witches, before Elli and Idi can return Re to her lawful owner, who lets them keep Ronny as a sign of his gratitude.

She lives with her mother Matea and her Aunt Eva in Berlin. Her mother and her aunt are twin sisters, and Elli has always lived with them. She does not know her father. Preparing for a school trip to Hamburg she comes across his name in the family book. He is called Thomas Fechner and he lives in Waldmeister Street in Hamburg. Together with her best friend Philip she decides to find him: Operation Woodruff (Waldmeister) is born. But rather than finding her father, she meets a girl her age. When Idi visits Elli in Berlin, Matea recognizes her daughter at once and she tells them the long-kept secret. Elli and Idi are twin sisters like Matea and Eva. They stem from an old family of witches and Matea and Thomas separated them as babies, because they wanted them to grow up as normal children. Both parents acknowledge that this was a mistake. Two make Magic – The Ghastly Grannies

by Sibylle Luig (Text) – Ulrike Barth-Musil (Illustrationen)

Synopsis Two Make Magic is the story of the twin sisters Elli and Idi, who come from an old family of witches. All twin sisters in the Schick family have magical powers - but only when they are together. Together, they control the elements. Elli’s best Element is the air, Idi’s favourite element is the water. Two Make Magic tells the story of two girls, who are powerful as long as they stick together. A story of sisterhood, friendship and family with a magic touch.   Volume 2 Elli and Idi have just turned 11. Idi is about to move to Berlin with her father, when Thomas suggests that Elli should come and visit Idi in her old home. Elli travels to Hamburg with her grandmother Matilda and her twin sister Esther. The two suddenly reappeared in Berlin after having shunned Eva and Matea for ten years, because they had separated the baby witches. The grannies claim they want to help Elli and Idi become real witches, but all they really do is selfish hocus pocus: At Idi’s swimming contest in Hamburg they make her swim way too fast and Idi thinks Elli used her magical powers. She is furious and tells Elli to leave her alone. Thomas too is very angry and says that he will have to rethink moving to Berlin, if the grannies continue to interfere with their lives. Elli is devastated. If that is how the ghastly grannies are going to behave, she will have to get rid of them. Her best friend Philip is there to help her with the new operation. They trick Matilda and Esther into acting against the code of honour of witches, which leads to them losing their magical powers and Idi can safely move to Berlin.
