        A Vision of Battlements

        by Anthony Burgess

        by Andrew Biswell, Paul Wake

A Vision of Battlements is the first novel by the writer and composer Anthony Burgess, who was born in Manchester in 1917. Set in Gibraltar during the Second World War, the book follows the fortunes of Richard Ennis, an army sergeant and incipient composer who dreams of composing great music and building a new cultural world after the end of the war. Following the example of his literary hero, James Joyce, Burgess takes the structure of his book from Virgil's Aeneid. The result is, like Joyce's Ulysses, a comic rewriting of a classical epic, whose critique of the Army and the postwar settlement is sharp and assured. The Irwell Edition is the first publication of Burgess's forgotten masterpiece since 1965. This new edition includes an introduction and notes by Andrew Biswell, author of a prize-winning biography of Anthony Burgess.

        The Eyelid

        by S. D. Chrostowska

In the near future, sleep has been banned. Our unemployed, dream-prone narrator finds himself following Chevauchet, a diplomat from Onirica, a foreign republic of dreams, to resist the prohibition. On a mission to combat the state-sponsored drugging of citizens with uppers for greater productivity, they traverse an eerie landscape in an everlasting autumn, able to see inside other people’s nightmares and dreams. When Chevauchet, the old radical, disappears, our narrator must take up Chevauchet’s dictum that ‘daydreaming is directly subversive’ and forge ahead on his own.   In slippery, exhilarating, and erudite prose, The Eyelid revels in the camaraderie of free thinking that can only happen on the lam, aiming to rescue a species that can no longer dream.

        ¡Qué ojos tan curiosos tienes!

        Ciencia para verte mejor

        by Carnevale, Romina; Vetere, Paola

"People get an idea of what the world is like through our senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. Thanks to sight we can locate ourselves in space, estimate how far away objects are, know how things look, enjoy landscapes... and much more. To see we use our eyes, which are the only organs of the body that allow us to do so. How do you see what you see? Do all animals see what you see? Do they see because they have eyes or do they see in other ways? Find out with your own eyes!"

      • Among Tigers

        by Amer Fahry

It was all nothing compared to the problem I faced again; Nobody talks to me, so I was isolated from everyone, and this isolation increased when I was banned from using the mobile phone to the extent that I could not call my mother to broadcast my concerns. I was dumbfounded for a moment, as if my body and mind were somewhere else, and I was overwhelmed with great sadness. Outside, it was very nice, and the kids were outside except for me.   I had the impression that I was having the best moments of my existence, the times of my youth, that period that goes by so fast and mercilessly. My breath was cut off, my throat dried up, my temperature rose, and tears began to overwhelm my eyelids, so I tried to prevent them from appearing. Nothing could have calmed me, the time for serving sweets and complimenting smiles had passed. Only my mother's affection could make me better.

The essentials that should always be on hand for good food and good sex are spelled out clearly in the introduction and the photographs are helpful, sometimes erotic and suggestive, but never prescriptive or pornographic. The food part is for thoughtful cooks; people who want to cook good food, well prepared from good ingredients. From simple dishes to the more complicated; scrambled eggs in the microwave or asparagus soup with poached eggs and pancetta for breakfast, to barbequed salmon, or ray wings in saffron milk sauce for dinner. It is about good, interesting cooking; some is quick and easy, some takes longer and is more complicated.Even those 'ordinary' fall backs chili con carne and spaghetti Bolognaise are enthusiatically included as well as the 'different' aubergine and dolcelatti sandwich, and mussels poached in cider with chorizo thyme and leek. The sex part is for thoughtful lovers, which both partners will enjoy. Women might want to select their favourite sexipes for their partners to read through prior to sex or lovemaking. Men might want their partners to read through some of the light ‘bondage’ sexipes in the ‘Tied’ section to show them that it is not all about pain, sadism, and weirdness, and to ley them know what will be happening. By following the sexipes men will also be able to show they can do bondage in an erotic and loving way, not to mention use their fingers and tongues more effectively!

        Cyclogeography

Journeys of a London Bicycle Courier

        by Jon Day

Cyclogeography is an essay about the bicycle in the cultural imagination and a portrait of London seen from the saddle. The bicycle enables us to feel a landscape, rather than just see it, and in the great tradition of the psychogeographers, Day attempts to depart from the map and reclaim the streets of the city. Informed by several grinding years spent as a bicycle courier, Day lifts the lid on the solitary life of the courier. Travelling the unmapped byways, short-cuts and edgelands of the city, couriers are the declining, invisible workforce of the city. The parcels they deliver – either commonplace or illicit – keep the city – and capitalism - running.

Handed a Foreign Office posting to Belgrade, James Moor gives up his season ticket and looks for a new Serbian team to support. Being a veteran of the Congo and Helmand Province war zones stands him in good stead for what follows. Having chosen Partizan over Red Star, James enters a scene awash with nationalism, xenophobia and conspiracy theories. He lifts the lid on Serbian fan culture, Partizan's internal disputes, violence between the club's own Grobari (Undertakers) supporters as well as with their hated local rivals.
