András Szabad wächst in einer ungarischen Kleinstadt auf, innig geliebt von seiner Mutter, einer Bibliothekarin. 1956 wird sein Vater wegen Teilnahme am Aufstand verhaftet. Als er nach drei Jahren völlig gebrochen nach Hause kommt, stirbt die Mutter – das Ende einer Kindheit. Mit dem Vater zieht er nach Budapest, und András entdeckt das Fotografieren. Als er Jahrzehnte später vom Unfalltod Évas erfährt, einer nach Amerika emigrierten Pianistin, mit der ihn eine Amour fou verband, beginnt er sein Leben niederzuschreiben – kurze Episoden, gestochen scharfe Dialoge, wie in einem Kammerspiel. Eine unheimliche Kälte und Einsamkeit durchweht diesen Künstlerroman, der um die Frage kreist, woher die Gewalt und die Verletzlichkeit kommen, die András in sich spürt. »Schöner hat lange niemand mehr von der Düsternis erzählt«, schrieb die FR über Attila Bartis und seinen Roman Die Ruhe. »Unerklärlich die atemberaubende Stilsicherheit« (ZEIT) des jungen Autors, seine »Leichtigkeit im Umgang mit der Last der Geschichte« (NZZ). Fünfzehn Jahre hat Attila Bartis an seinem nächsten Roman gearbeitet: Das Ende ist sein opus magnum: ein Werk, das mit unerbittlicher Genauigkeit von erotischer Abhängigkeit, Lüge und Erpressung erzählt.

Bordering intimacy explores the interconnected role of borders and dominant forms of family intimacy in the governance of postcolonial states. Combining a historical investigation with postcolonial, decolonial and black feminist theory, the book reveals how the border policies of the British and other European empires have been reinvented for the twenty-first century through appeals to protect and sustain 'family life' - appeals that serve to justify and obfuscate the continued organisation of racialised violence. The book examines the continuity of colonial rule in numerous areas of contemporary government, including family visa regimes, the policing of 'sham marriages', counterterror strategies, deprivation of citizenship, policing tactics and integration policy.

The book presents ethnographic and phenomenological discussions of people's changing lives as they cross borders, how people transgress and reshape moral boundaries of proper gender and kinship behaviour, and moral economies of intimacy and sexuality. It also focuses on migrants' navigation of social and financial services in their destination countries, putting questions about rights and limitations on citizenship at the core.

Samuel Beckett schrieb 1945 bis 1946 seine drei Erzählungen ›Der Ausgestoßene‹, ›Das Beruhigungsmittel‹ und ›Das Ende‹. Beckett hat jetzt eine vierte Erzählung, die ebenfalls 1945 entstand, zur Veröffentlichung freigegeben. Ihr erzählerischer Hintergrund ist der Weg eines Liebhabers vom Grabe des Vaters in den vorübergehenden Ehestand mit einer Prostituierten; die Beziehung ist nicht von Dauer. Das Thema ›Erste Liebe‹ wird zum Thema einer vehementen Befreiung. Becketts Erzählungen sind leichter zugänglich als seine Romane, zu denen sie sich verhalten wie ein Bruchstück zum Ganzen. Auch die Erzählung ›Erste Liebe‹ führt ein in die typische Gestaltenwelt seines Werkes.

In the wake of #MeToo in India and South Africa

Both India and South Africa have shared the infamy of being labelled the world's 'rape capitals', with high levels of everyday gender-based and sexual violence. At the same time, both boast long histories of resisting such violence and its location in wider cultures of patriarchy, settler colonialism and class and caste privilege. Through the lens of the #MeToo moment, the book tracks histories of feminist organising in both countries, while also revealing how newer strategies extended or limited these struggles. Intimacy and injury is a timely mapping of a shifting political field around gender-based violence in the global south. In proposing comparative, interdisciplinary, ethnographically rich and analytically astute reflections on #MeToo, it provides new and potentially transformative directions to scholarly debates this book builds transnational feminist knowledge and solidarity in and across the global south.
