        Therapeutic landscapes

        A history of English hospital gardens since 1800

        by Clare Hickman

        Therapeutic landscapes uniquely brings together historical and contemporary debates on the use of the garden as a therapeutic space. Hickman narrates the story of the landscapes associated with psychiatric, general and specialist medical institutions and asks what did they look like, how were they used and how did this relate to medical concepts? It traces the history of these gardens from the grottos, Chinese galleries and summer houses of elite nineteenth-century lunatic asylums, through Florence Nightingale's championing of the Victorian pavilion hospital design with its courtyard gardens, and the open-air institutions of the Edwardian period with their revolving chalets. It concludes with a discussion of new hospital gardens being created by designers such as Dan Pearson in the twenty-first century. This book will be essential reading for those interested in the histories of place, space and material culture, and in particular medical historians, garden historians and historical geographers. ;

      • Photographic Compendium of the Oversea Kizil Grotto Murals

        海外克孜尔壁画复原影像集

        by Zhao Li

        The construction of the Kizil grottoes started in the third century and was completed between the eighth and ninth centuries. It represent the earliest group of Buddhist grottoes in China. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, archaeological expeditions to the historical Western Regions of China attracted many foreign expeditions. Foreign explorers came to Kizil one after another to visit and survey the grottoes. These expedition groups removed different numbers of murals and painted statues from their original locations. After twenty years of tireless efforts and with the support of both the Museum ofAsiatischeKunst and the Hermitage Museum, the Kucha Research Institute of Xinjiang has now acquired 465 high-resolution images of the Kizil Grotto murals from more than twenty museums in eight countries. Researchers at the Kucha Research Institutehave measured the murals and compared them with the traces left in the original grottoes, which have since been 3D scanned. Many of their original locations have been located. This book presents the images of the oversea murals to provide the reader with integrated visual information on the original appearance of the caves and their murals. We hope that this exhibition exemplifies the hybridity which so characterizes the cultural heritage of Xinjiang.
