        Neue Totentänze

        Holzstiche von Karl-Georg Hirsch

by Herbert Kästner, Volker Braun, Peter Gosse, Kerstin Hensel, Richard Pietraß, Hubert Schirneck, Kathrin Schmidt

This includes not only direct effects through contact with the species via bites, wounds and disease, but also indirect effects caused by changes induced in ecosystems by invasive species, such as more water hyacinth increasing mosquito levels and thereby the potential for malaria. Covering a wide range of case studies from different taxa (animals and plants), and giving an overview of the diverse impacts of invasive species on health in developed and developing countries, the book is a significant contribution that will help in prioritizing approaches to controlling invasive species and mitigating their health effects. It covers invasive plants, marine species, spiders and other arachnids, ticks and dust mites, insects, mosquitos and other diptera, freshwater species (invertebrates and fishes), amphibians and reptiles, birds and mammals. Key Features Collects together the major health impacts for the first time Covers animal and plant invasive species Examines issues in developed and developing countries The broad spectrum of the analyzed case studies will ensure the appeal of the book to a wide public, including researchers of biological invasions, doctors, policy-makers and managers, and students of invasive species in ecology, animal and plant biology and public health medicine.

      • Memento mori

        by Tiitu Takalo

An autobiographical graphic novel about life, art, the search of happiness, and surviving a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 38.   In Memento mori, Tiitu Takalo, one of the greatest graphic novelists from Finland, describes her sudden and unexpected cerebral hemorrhage and the long process of recovery. It is a dramatic story about a life turned upside down overnight: a ruptured cerebral aneurysm, the days spent in an intensive care unit, and the long road to recovery which leads the artist to reflect on her current and past life.   Far more than a story of survival, Memento Mori is a philosophical and psychological journey told with exceptional honesty and compassion. It is a sublime graphic novel from a master of the medium and, ultimately, a celebration of life.

Remembering death daily helps us manage the chaos of this world, work towards an earthly holiness in view of the next life, and grow closer to God. It’s a means of perfecting your character by cultivating detachment and considering the soul’s immortality.

What Does This Look Like In The Classroom?

Bridging The Gap Between Research And Practice

by Carl Hendrick (Author, Editor), Robin Macpherson (Author, Editor), Oliver Caviglioli (Illustrator)

Educators around the world are uniting behind the need for the profession to have access to more high-quality research and evidence to do their job more effectively. But every year thousands of research papers are published, some of which contradict each other. How can busy teachers know which research is worth investing time in reading and understanding? And how easily is that academic research translated into excellent practice in the classroom? In this thorough, enlightening and comprehensive book, Carl Hendrick and Robin Macpherson ask 18 of today's leading educational thinkers to distill the most up-to-date research into effective classroom practice in 10 of the most important areas of teaching. The result is a fascinating manual that will benefit every single teacher in every single school, in all four corners of the globe. Contributors: Assessment, marking & feedback: Dylan Wiliam & Daisy Christodoulou; Behaviour: Tom Bennett & Jill Berry; Classroom talk and questioning: Martin Robinson & Doug Lemov; Learning myths: David Didau & Pedro de Bruyckere; Motivation: Nick Rose & Lucy Crehan; Psychology and memory: Paul Kirschner & Yana Weinstein; SEN: Jarlath O Brien & Maggie Snowling; Technology: Jose Picardo & Neelam Parmar; Reading and literacy: Alex Quigley & Dianne Murphy
