        ‘Chords of freedom’

Commemoration, ritual and British transatlantic slavery

        by J. R. Oldfield

        How should we as Britons remember transatlantic slavery? How has slavery been remembered in the past? 'Chords of freedom' sets out to answer these questions and, in doing so, traces the way in which British transatlantic slavery has been absorbed into the nation's collective memory. By combining two current historiographical preoccupations - the construction of public memory and British transatlantic slavery - this fascinating book focuses on the way in which the British traditionally have been taught to view transatlantic slavery through the moral triumph of abolition. The author traces the construction of this national history through a number of case studies, including visual images, literary memorials (the competing accounts of the anti-slavery movement produced by Thomas Clarkson and Robert and Samuel Wilberforce), monument-memorials, galleries and museums, and commemorative rituals from the nineteenth century to the present day. A separate chapter also considers how Britain's example in abolishing first the slave trade (1807) and then colonial slavery (1833-34) impacted on the rituals of the American anti-slavery movement, and served as a convenient symbol of the potential of freedom in the British West Indies. 'Chords of freedom' offers valuable new insights into the way in which a 'culture of abolition' took root in Britain, and how our views of transatlantic slavery and figures like William Wilberforce have been revised and amended to reflect the changing demands of a series of 'present days'. Its cross-disciplinary approach will appeal to a broad spectrum of specialists, as well as to undergraduates and postgraduates. ;

Mit Illustrationen von Leech, Stanfiels, Stone u.a

by Charles Dickens, Marcus Stone, John Leech, Stanfield Clarkson

A Christmas Carol (1843), gehörte dabei zu seinem festen Leseprogramm. Charles Dickens starb am 9. Juni 1870 in Kent.

        Molecular Variability of Fungal Pathogens

by Edited by Paul Dennis Bridge, Yvonne Couteaudier, John Clarkson

This volume contains a series of contributions from established European researchers which consider aspects of molecular variability in fungal pathogens. Chapters are derived from a workshop held in Evian, France, in September 1997, supported by the EU Concerted Action Air 3-CT94-2448. The volume is divided into three sections. The first includes contributions which consider and review the major mechanisms involved, the second details specific studies on variability in populations of different fungal pathogens, and the third includes contributions on methods for interpreting such variability. The workshop was intended to bring together methods and understanding from a wide range of fungal pathogens, and this is reflected in the volume where individual contributions include case studies and reviews of populations of fungi pathogenic on insects and nematodes as well as plant and human pathogens. The combination of mechanisms, characterisation and interpretation across a wide range of applied mycology makes this a significant general text for those working on molecular characterisation. The broad spectrum of topics provides a multidisciplinary reference source within mycology and the book will be suitable for postgraduate students and research scientists in applied mycology, including plant pathology, medical mycology and biological control.

The Great Train Robber whose partnership with Pablo Escobar turned Britain on to cocaine

        by Wensley Clarkson

This is the extraordinary story of how Charlie Wilson – renowned as one of the leaders of the Great Train Robbery gang – turned his back on so-called traditional crime to become the underworld’s original narco by masterminding a multi-billion dollar drugs network in partnership with the original cocaine cowboy, Pablo Escobar. Today, Wilson is infamous for helping turn cocaine into the Western World’s number one recreational drug of choice. Secret Narco unravels the bullet riddled story of South Londoner Wilson’s cocaine empire and his forays into the deadliest killing fields of all: South America. Meticulously researched, Secret Narco features interviews with many of Wilson’s friends, family members and enemies on both sides of the law enforcement divide, as well as associates of Pablo Escobar. Secret Narco examines in detail the final, tragic circumstances behind Wilson and Escobar’s bloody deaths and how their twisted ‘partnership’ proved that gangsters never rest in peace. Wensley Clarkson has investigated numerous crimes across the world for the past thirty years. His books – published in more than thirty countries – have sold two million copies. He has also written movie and TV screenplays and made numerous documentaries in the UK, US and Spain. His most recent major project is Florida-based TV series Boca Grande which he created, developed and wrote with BAFTA award-winning Peaky Blinders director David Caffrey.

Off-Road with Clarkson, Hammond & May

Behind the Scenes of Their 'Rock and Roll' World Tour

        by Phillipa Sage

For over 12 years Phillipa Sage worked alongside Clarkson, Hammond and May as their PA, gofer, and fixer where she saw the boys at their best and, hilariously, at their worst. A closet petrol head, Phillipa started working in the motor industry on live events over 20 years ago and first worked with Jeremy Clarkson and Andy Wilman (formerly Top Gear and now the Grand Tour’s Executive Producer) in 1997.  She proved to be a loyal, trusted friend and colleague to all the presenters—from back in the beginning with Tiff Needell and Quentin Wilson—to the now infamous trio of Clarkson, Hammond and May, and became a key member of what became known as ‘The Bubble’, the exclusive, dysfunctional working family that toured the world.  With an enormous budget, they travelled like rock stars—with super cars, yachts, private jets, helicopters, and five-star wining and dining—taking their unique brand of motoring madness to 18 countries, 31 cities and to over 2 million fans in arenas and at festivals from New Zealand to Norway. Supported by a large crew and their personal entourage, Clarkson, Hammond and May, when not performing in their extraordinary, high octane, live action, motoring theatre, indulged in extravagant holidays. They and their ‘Bubble’ family relaxed in luxury resorts or private houses entertaining themselves with pool parties, drinking, heli-sightseeing, drinking, private motorboat cruises, drinking, jet skiing, sailing, drinking and eating, and drinking. In Off-Road with Clarkson, Hammond & May, Phillipa shares the tour highs, lows and laughter of three incredibly talented, stupid and naughty boys.

The A Z of Being British

        by Brian Titrage

As its cover suggests, The A to Z of Being British is an acerbic take on the state of modern Britain. Funny, insightful and eversoslightly nonPC, the book is split into 70 alphabetic sections. It covers a range of topics from the generic (e.g. democracy) to the specific (e.g. Jeremy Clarkson) and from the perennial (e.g. Wimbledon) to the very topical (e.g. banks). I’m very fair in my criticism, being equally disgusted with everyone and everything that gets a mention. That hasn’t stopped some from taking offence, however, so be warned – this is not a book for the fainthearted or the deeply patriotic. There are many good, kind, hardworking people of integrity in Britain, but my book isn;t about them. Instead, I wrote it for them. Or to be more precise I wrote it for me, but with them in mind. Not all good, kind, hardworking people of Britain will welcome it. Some already haven’t. That came as no surprise, because not everyone takes a balanced view. Patriotism distorts, just as power corrupts. My book isn’t fair either. It’s a caricature, Britain seen grotesque in the cruellest of funfair mirrors, a counterbalance to all those people who lead our Government and our industries who aren’t kind people of integrity, and who are doing very nicely thank you out of screwing the nation while telling us that Britain is still Great. Well, it isn’t, and The A to Z of Being British explains in the clearest possible terms why. It's catharsis. Enjoy!

by Joy Cowley (author), Giselle Clarkson (illustrator)

The tiny woman makes a coat of leaves with the help of friends in this vibrant rhyming tale. The trees, geese, porcupine, horse and plants all share something so the tiny woman can snip, snip, snip and stitch, stitch, stitch a coat to keep herself warm. Resourcefulness and friendship are at the heart of this simple rhythmic poem by one of the world’s best children’s writers. Buoyant and satisfying to read aloud, this small book will leave the reader snug as a bug.

        Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Plants

by Vanitha Jain & P. Ananda Kumar

Nitrogen fertilizers are necessary to enhance agricultural production and to sustain food security. However, their inefficient use accrues from inherent limitations of the crop plants as well as the manner in which N fertilizers are formulated, applied and managed. The main aim of the book is to assess the various aspects of the fate of fertilizer N in context of the overall N inputs to agricultural systems, with a view to enhance the efficiency of nitrogen use and reduce the negative impacts on environment. The cross cutting issues relate to improvement in nitrogen use by emerging technologies (genetic enhancement, QTL mapping), meeting N needs by understanding its interactions with other nutrients, and mitigation of nitrogen losses caused by environmental factors and management practices. Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Plants develops links between basic and applied research and practical crop production by addressing a wide range of topics relating to nitrogen use efficiency, and to plant and crop responses to applications of nitrogen via fertilizers, including nitrogen acquisition and reduction, molecular approaches, nitrate induction and signaling; and nitrogen use under abiotic stresses. Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Plants is an invaluable classroom aid for academics working in plant physiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular breeding and agronomy, and an essential professional resource for researchers working in plant and crop systems as it provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary description of problems related to the efficient use of nitrogen in agriculture.
