Tourism Transformations in Protected Area Gateway Communities

by Susan L Slocum, Peter Wiltshier, John Basil Read IV, Dorothee Bohn, Andrea Zita Botelho, Kelly S. Bricker, Robert S. Bristow, Karina H. Casimiro, Rosa Suárez Chaparro, Ana Cristina Costa, Kynda R. Curtis, Margaret J. Daniels, Edieser Dela Santa, C. Michael Hall, Manuel Ramón Gonzalez Herrera, Russell M. Hicks, Julie Judkins, N. Qwynne Lackey, Natalya Lawrence, Gustavo C. X. M. P. Machado, Gianna Moscardo, Jake Powell, Sidnei Raimundo, Mary Anne Ramos-Tumanan, Milena Manhães Rodrigues, Chris Ryan, Renato de Oliveira dos Santos, Jessica A. Schottanes, Ole R. Sleipness, Maria Anunciação Ventura, Therez B. Walker

Gateway communities that neighbour parks and protected areas are impacted by tourism, while facing unique circumstances related to protected area management. Economic dependency remains a serious challenge for these communities, especially in a climate of neoliberalism, top-down policy environments, and park closures related to environmental degradation or government budgets. The collection of works in this edited book provide bottom-up, informed, and nuanced approaches to tourism management using local experiences from gateway communities and protected areas management emerging from a decade of guidelines, rulemaking, and exclusive decision-making. Global perspectives are presented and contextualized at the local level of gateway communities in an attempt to balance nature, community, and commerce, while supporting the triple bottom line of sustainable tourism. While anticipating a post-COVID 19 global shift, readers are encouraged to think through transformation and resiliency in regard to how the flux of supply vs demand alters gateway community perspectives on tourism. Specific features of this book include: · Focus on transformations, which provides insight into the complex and dynamic nature of gateway communities. · Multidisciplinary, multi-cultural insights into protected area management. · Applied and conceptual chapters from global perspectives.

        Michael Winterbottom

by Brian McFarlane, Deane Williams, Brian McFarlane, Neil Sinyard

This is the first book-length study of the most prolific and most critically acclaimed director working in British cinema today. Michael Winterbottom has also established himself, and his company, Revolution Films, as a dynamic force in world cinema. No other British director can claim such an impressive body of work in such a variety of genres, from road movie to literary adaptation, from musical to sex film, to stories of contemporary political significance. The authors of this book use a range of critical approaches to analyse the filmmaker's eclectic interests in cinema and the world at large. With this in mind, the realist elements of such films as Welcome to Sarajevo are examined in the light of a long history of cinema's dealings with realism, as far back as post-war Italian neo-realist filmmaking; whereas Jude and The claim are approached as both literary adaptations (a continuing strand in British cinema history) and examples of other reworked genres (the road movie, the western). This lively study of his work, written in a wholly accessible style, will engage all those who have followed his career as well as those with a wide-ranging interest in British cinema.

Searching for the Left in a fragmented world

        by Bishnupriya Dutt, Silvija Jestrovic

Through the lens of performance and politics, this collection zooms in on the context-specific dimensions, analogies, and micro-histories of the Left to better understand the larger picture. It proposes a search for the Left not from totalising Leftist ideological positions and partisan politics but from ethical dimensions through smaller-scale Left-leaning struggles; not from the political to the aesthetic, but from the potentiality of art to offer new political imagination and critique; not from the individual subordinated to the collective, but from the dialectics of subjectivity and collectivity. This is not an attempt at a sweeping global overview of Leftist cultures either, but a collection that brings together culture-specific and comparative perspectives. This book searches for fragments of and on the Left, past and present, through which to rethink and patch a fragmented world.

        Farm Business Management

        The Core Skills

by Peter L Nuthall, Michael L. Thompson, Patrick J. Skelly

Based on research carried out within the farming community and academic studies, this book assesses and explains the core skills needed to become a successful farm manager. Observation, anticipation of plan outcomes, and risk management are identified as key requirements, and each of these categories is broken down into isolated skills such as problem definition and visual observation, which are in turn dissected and analysed. Practical methods for acquiring or improving each skill are covered in detail, with practice exercises to engage the reader in active participation. This book is an essential resource for farm managers and students.

        Forestry, Second Edition

by Catherine L. Raven, Series Editor: William G. Hopkins

For centuries, forests have provided humans and wildlife with shelter and food, but as the need for more wood products from trees increases, so too does the danger of losing the source of our natural wealth. Left untouched, forests provide beauty and recreation that continue to improve our quality of life, and it is our responsibility to take care of that which takes care of us. Forestry, Second Edition explores the science of forestry, from the types of trees and shrubs grown for commercial and medicinal use, to the impact of trees on the environment and human society. This reference is a vital tool for students and teachers of the natural world.

        Verantwortung

        Philosophische Grundlagentexte

by Christoph Halbig, Jörg Löschke, Philipp Schwind
