        Bovine Tuberculosis

by Mark Chambers, Stephen Gordon, Francisco Olea-Popelka, Paul Barrow

This book is contemporary, topical and global in its approach, and provides an essential, comprehensive treatise on bovine tuberculosis and the bacterium that causes it, Mycobacterium bovis. Bovine tuberculosis remains a major cause of economic loss in cattle industries worldwide, exacerbated in some countries by the presence of a substantial wildlife reservoir. It is a major zoonosis, causing human infection through consumption of unpasteurised milk or by close contact with infected animals. Following a systematic approach, expert international authors cover epidemiology and the global situation; microbial virulence and pathogenesis; host responses to the pathogen; and diagnosis and control of the disease. Aimed at researchers and practising veterinarians, this book is essential for those needing comprehensive information on the pathogen and disease, and offers a summary of key information learned from human tuberculosis research. It will be useful to those studying the infection and for those responsible for controlling the disease.

Tourism Case Studies Latin America Region

        by Thiago Allis, Sandro Carnicelli

Latin America is a complex mosaic of nations, people and landscapes, with unique cultural, scenic and economic resources but with no more than 6% of global international tourist arrivals (World Bank, 2019). The region hosts several top international destinations - such as the Caribbean islands and the sacred city of the Incas, Machu Picchu (Peru). Cities like São Paulo and Mexico City are internationally known for their Meetings Incentives Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector. Galapagos (Ecuador) and Fernando de Noronha (Brazil) are areas of significant ecological importance. However, even if some of the destinations are well known internationally, the region is still seen as an untouched source for tourism at global and regional scales. Moreover, the region is still underrepresented in international tourism literature and content for pedagogical and educational purposes still limited. This gap needs to be filled, to help inform tourism developments and to better educate the next generation. This can help shift students and practitioners away from an over-dependence on models and ideas developed and tested in different social and cultural settings that may not be appropriate for a Latin American context. Therefore, this book aims to bring together researchers, students, practitioners and other agents involved with research, teaching and the operation of tourism to share their research and work experiences in Latin America, in the form of case studies focusing on real-world examples.

In the stretch of emptyness where no one dwells, changing beings are born as drops, as enigmas, as suspension points... They take a little bit of light and then steal shade from darkness. Thus these puppets grow strong, stealthy, and alive in the multiple sceneries of their theatre.

Are We Pushing Animals to Their Biological Limits?

        Welfare and Ethical Implications

        by Temple Grandin, Martin Whiting

Stimulating and thought-provoking, this important new text looks at the welfare problems and philosophical and ethical issues that are caused by changes made to an animal's telos, behaviour and physiology, both positive and negative, to make them more productive or adapted for human uses. These changes may involve selective breeding for production, appearance traits, or competitive advantage in sport, transgenic animals or the use of pharmaceuticals or hormones to enhance production or performance. Changes may impose duties to care for these animals further and more intensely, or they may make the animal more robust. The book considers a wide range of animals, including farm animals, companion animals and laboratory animals. It reviews the ethics and welfare issues of animals that have been adapted for sport, as companions, in work, as ornaments, food sources, guarding and a whole host of other human functions. This important new book sparks debate and is essential reading for all those involved in animal welfare and ethics, including veterinarians, animal scientists, animal welfare scientists and ethologists.

Gazes for an emerging citizenship. Encounters and disagreements on the digital ambit

Encuentros y desencuentros en el escenario digital

by Rocío Abascal Mena, Claudia Pedraza Bucio

Today we inhabit a world that has been transformed by digital technologies, allowing effortless connection through social media and access to vast amounts of information. In this socio-cultural space, a form of citizenship emerges that displays its capacities and potentialities; that requires active participation in different moments of encounter and disagreement; that calls for dialogue, decision-making, the creation and consumption of information, and, above all, that aims to the configuration of critical subjects capable of transforming their reality: citizens who are also consumers: gamers, readers of news and people looking for love with their best profile picture. In the emergence of this citizenship, dialogical-discursive relationships arise in the context of mass self-communication, through daily, individual and collective interactions, in which fundamental rights are disputed, such as the rights to communicate, to information, to free expression, to privacy. This setting implies great challenges for the exercise of citizen life. The gaze of this book returns to the practices that in one way or another allow and demand to be assumed as a political subject from everyday life. Without intending to exhaust the contexts and contingencies of the digital, the text calls for interpretation, discussion and search for answers that allow us to understand the emerging citizenship, of which we are already participants, beyond our clicks.

Desde la universidad a la sociedad

        Selección de escritos / 2010 - 2015

        by Ignacio Sánchez D.

        by Ignacio Sánchez D.

by Laura Fonseca Durán, Diana Vernot, Tatiana Rojas Roa, Laura Giraldo Martínez, Edwin Corena Puentes, David J. Luquetta Cediel

This book is an initiative of the Regional Groups of Historical Memory (GRMH), which, together with the National Center for Historical Memory since 2013, generated proposals for the construction of historical memory in Colombia. The objective of the consolidation of the GRMH has been to recognize local research processes carried out by university professors to build bridges between the country's institutions and communities victimized in the framework of the internal armed conflict in Colombia.   Although the participatory social research bets are nourished by multiple edges, disciplines, and schools of thought, there are methodological peculiarities in the investigations that are formulated in the key of historical memory that, on this occasion, are transversal and are deepened in each chapter.
