Nach Geist und Natur. Eine notwendige Einheit hat Gregory Bateson an dem vorliegenden Buch gearbeitet, das er zu Lebzeiten aber nicht mehr zum Abschluß bringen konnte und das von seiner Tochter Mary Catherine fertiggestellt wurde.Ausgehend von dem, was wir über die biologische Welt wissen, sowie davon, was wir über das »Erkennen« zu begreifen vermögen, möchte Bateson erklären, was unter »dem Heiligen« zu verstehen sein könnte. Neben dem »Heiligen« spielen zwei weitere »integrative Erfahrungsdimensionen« eine wichtige Rolle: die des »ästhetischen« und die des »Bewußtseins«. Es ist diese Konstellation von Problemen, der man sich, so Bateson, widmen muß, wenn man zu einer Theorie des Handelns in der lebendigen Welt gelangen will – zu einer kybernetischen Ethik.

Michael D. Friedman's second edition of this stage history of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus adds an examination of twelve major theatrical productions and one film that appeared in the years 1989-2009. Friedman identifies four lines of descent in the recent performance history of the play: the stylised, realistic, darkly comic, and political approaches, which culminate in Julie Taymor's harrowing film Titus (1999). Aspects of Taymor's eclectic vision of ancient Rome under the grip of modern fascism were copied by several subsequent productions, making Titus the most characteristic, as well as the most influential, contemporary performance of the play. Friedman's work extends Alan Dessen's original study to include Taymor's film, along with chapters devoted to the efforts of international directors including Gregory Doran, Silviu Purcarete, and Yukio Ninagawa.

Und je größer der Abstand, nach Kilometern wie nach Jahren, umso mythischer erscheint der Ort. Rüdiger Esch, selbst Düsseldorfer und als Mitglied von »Die Krupps« Teil der Szene, beleuchtet deren Entwicklung von den Anfängen um 1970 bis zum Ende der analogen Phase um 1986. Model and Supermodel extends the discussion about the social and cultural significance of the model in British art and culture. A fascinating collection of essays and interviews, it examines the persistent mythology of the artist's model and some of the ambiguities involved in depicting the body. The volume begins with Martin Postle's survey of the profession of the model during the period c.1840-1940. Elizabeth Prettejohn considers the Pre-Raphaelite model and Alison Smith examines the lives of some nineteenth-century models who achieved fame and notoriety in their own right. Jane Desmarais looks at the model from a literary perspective and Reena Suleman presents the work of Edward Linley Sambourne. Michael Hatt's essay examines the aesthetic and ethical aspects of Tuke's use of boy models for his paintings of nude bathers, and William Vaughan reflects on the British figurative tradition from Sickert to Freud. Catherine Wood brings the volume up to date with her essay on the found model in contemporary art, and the volume concludes with two interviews with the artist, Peter Blake, and a life model, Susannah Gregory. The book offers a series of lively takes on the phenomenon of the artist's model.
