Fünf lange Poeme – die berühmten Gedichte Sonnenstein, Weiß, Nachtstück von San Ildefenso, Noch einmal durchwacht und Charta des Glaubens – hat Octavio Paz gegen Ende seines Lebens in einem Band zusammengestellt und mit pointiert kurzen Gedichten, »winzigen Irrlichtern«, eingefaßt und kontrastiert. Entstanden ist ein Ganzes, das die Gestalt eines Fächers oder fünfarmigen Deltas bildet.In dieser Komposition zeigt sich, daß Octavio Paz mit seinen langen Gedichten eine von Walt Whitman über Ezra Pound und Pablo Neruda führende Tradition der Moderne produktiv fortführte: die des hymnischen Gedichts, Anrufung des Lebens, Evokation des erfüllten Augenblicks. Tropical coastal deltas represent one of the most diverse and rapidly changing biophysical regions in the developing world. These deltas are home to large populated areas, are significant centres of agricultural production and industrial development, and contain fragile ecosystems that are now facing new threats as a result of expected sea-level rises associated with global warming. Focusing on the developing countries of Asia, Africa and South America, chapters explore the diverse livelihoods of people in these areas and the impact of land-water management on the environment. New techniques and methodologies are explored in land and water management to try and solve the conflicts between rice-based agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries and the environment in tropical delta regions. The Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta has newly emerged 'char' islands, resulting from the deposition of sediment, which are very vulnerable, socially, institutionally and environmentally. Modern taxonomic treatments of the grass family (Poaceae, Gramineae) recognize about 10,000 species and as many as 785 genera. This book provides detailed descriptions of these genera, in alphabetical sequence, the descriptions having been generated by computer from a taxonomic data bank. One of the authors has been engaged for some twenty years in compiling data and observations on grass genera, in order to investigate classificatory questions and to explore taxonomic applications of computer methods. The other has worked for a similar time on computer key-making, and has developed the DELTA system for comprehensive representation and manipulation of taxonomic descriptions. They have devised a grass generic character list to cover all aspects of variation in glasses. In this book this list comprises 496 characters, dealing with nomenclature, general morphology, leaf anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, haploid and 2cDNA values, fruit and embryo structure, seeding form, cytology, intergeneric hybrids, phytogeography and distribution, ecology, pathogens, classification and economic aspects. The work is undoubtedly a definitive work, essential for all those with a serious research interest in grasses.
This book is a product of the international VIDE (Virus Identification Data Exchange) project, which uses the DELTA (Description Language for Taxonomy) database system to collect diagnostic information on all plant viruses. Information on over 500 characters has been sought for each virus and stored in the VIDE database. Over two-thirds of these characters record the susceptibility, or otherwise, of a range of commonly used test plant species; the remainder represent the great range of other characters used for virus identification. Information on the known natural host range of each virus is also presented. The book covers more than 900 viruses, which represents the entire database of plant viruses from around the world. It includes all viruses of plants, not only those whose virions have been described, but also those such as umbraviruses that have no virion protein genes of their own, and use the virion proteins of their symbiotic helper viruses. Viroids and the many transmissible agents that cause virus-like diseases, but whose infectious particles have not yet been characterized, are excluded. However, the database accession numbers of the genomic sequences of satellite RNAs are included. The book also contains summaries of data for all the viruses that are definitive or tentative members of the 50 or so accepted genera or "groups". Overall, the book is a standard reference work that will prove indispensable for virologists ad plant pathologists.

Extensively modified over the last century and a half, California's San Francisco Bay Delta Estuary remains biologically diverse and functions as a central element in California's water supply system. Uncertainties about the future, actions taken under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) and companion California statues, and lawsuits have led to conflict concerning the timing and amount of water that can be diverted from the Delta for agriculture, municipal, and industrial purposes and concerning how much water is needed to protect the Delta ecosystem and its component species. Sustainable Water and Environmental Management in the California Bay-Delta focuses on scientific questions, assumptions, and conclusions underlying water-management alternatives and reviews the initial public draft of the Bay Delta Conservation Plan in terms of adequacy of its use of science and adaptive management. In addition, this report identifies the factors that may be contributing to the decline of federally listed species, recommend future water-supple and delivery options that reflect proper consideration of climate change and compatibility with objectives of maintaining a sustainable Bay-Delta ecosystem, advises what degree of restoration of the Delta system is likely to be attainable, and provides metrics that can be used by resource managers to measure progress toward restoration goals.
The San Francisco Bay Delta Estuary is a large, complex estuarine ecosystem in California. It has been substantially altered by dikes, levees, channelization, pumps, human development, introduced species, dams on its tributary streams and contaminants. The Delta supplies water from the state's wetter northern regions to the drier southern regions and also serves as habitat for many species, some of which are threatened and endangered. The restoration of water exacerbated tensions over water allocation in recent years, and have led to various attempts to develop comprehensive plans to provide reliable water supplies and to protect the ecosystem. One of these plans is the Bay Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP). The report, A Review of the Use of Science and Adaptive Management in California's Draft Bay Delta Conservation Plan, determines that the plan is incomplete in a number of important areas and takes this opportunity to identify key scientific and structural gaps that, if addressed, could lead to a more successful and comprehensive final BDCP. The plan is missing the type of structure usually associated with current planning methods in which the goals and objectives are specified, alternative measure for achieving the objectives are introduced and analyzed, and a course of action in identified based on analytical optimization of economic, social, and environmental factors. Yet the panel underscores the importance of a credible and a robust BDCP in addressing the various water management problems that beset the Delta. A stronger, more complete, and more scientifically credible BDCP that effectively integrates and utilizes science could indeed pave the way toward the next generation of solutions to California's chronic water problems.
