        Labour, the state, social movements and the challenge of neo-liberal globalisation

        by Andrew Gamble, Steven Fielding, Steve Ludlam, John Callaghan, Andrew Taylor, Steve Ludlam, Stephen Wood

        With the emergence of neo-liberalism in the 1980s as the dominant domestic and international political-economic orthodoxy, labour as both a social category and political movement tended to be written off or ignored by academics, politicians and commentators. However, at a time when the world's working class is growing faster than at any previous time in history and neo-liberalism is widely challenged, this orthodoxy is clearly inadequate. The spread of global production means that to ignore labour, its organisations, interests and politics, is to ignore one of the key components of that process. Labour organisations have not gone away and neither has the state: their relationship remains as significant as ever. The strategic relationship between trade unions and social movements, nationally and internationally, has also developed markedly, especially in the south. New patterns of resistance are emerging to challenge global capital and those who assert that globalisation is irresistible. ;

        Managing Risk in Agriculture

        A Development Perspective

        by Ashok K. Mishra, Subal C. Kumbhakar, Gudbrand Lien

        The book addresses and documents farmers' risks in developing and emerging economies. It draws lessons from experimental economics on measuring risk preferences, attitudes, gender differences in managing risks, and risk management strategies in countries across Africa and Asia. It argues policy makers, especially in emerging economies, need a better understanding of farmers' attitudes toward risk and choices of risk management strategies when designing policies to support production agriculture. The book includes chapters on three themes: understanding risk attitudes and preferences; using experimental economics to measure risk, preferences, and risk management strategies; and understanding climate change, risk, and risk management. The book critically examines the currently held beliefs about risk preference, attitudes, and empirical estimation of risk management strategies, emphasizing developing and emerging economies (DEE). "The agricultural development space is an inherently risky one and this welcome collection belatedly helps to plug an important hole." Jock R. Anderson, Emeritus Professor of Agricultural Economics, University of New England, Armidale, Australia "Over time, agricultural production practices have evolved, as have the markets and value chains for food and agricultural products. A constant consideration, however, and one that continues to define agriculture worldwide, is risk. The risks that impinge on agriculture come in all shapes and sizes. Of course, production risks are ubiquitous. But so are market risks. And the same is true for macroeconomic and financial risks and the risks associated with an evolving climate. This book will be a valuable, comprehensive resource for any applied economist desiring to understand the risk management principles relevant to modern food and agricultural systems." Matthew Holt, Prof. and head of the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg, VA, USA.

        Handbook of Phytosanitary Risk Management

        Theory and Practice

        by Charles Yoe, Robert Griffin, Stephanie Bloem

        Phytosanitary risk management is essential to the global economy as well as the world's ability to feed itself. This book is about understanding the fundamentals of phytosanitary risk management for trade and non-trade issues, and how to manage those risks in an effective and efficient manner that is consistent with the international regulatory framework. Its purpose is to provide the international phytosanitary community and its principal stakeholders with a strong foundation in risk management concepts and a thorough guide to best practices. Starting with the conceptual background necessary for understanding risk management, this book then covers a risk management model with a detailed description of the structure and processes necessary for best practice risk management in the global economy. This is followed by an in-depth look at the continuum of phytosanitary measures with a laser-like focus on key risk management issues, and the book concludes with a final section devoted to an examination of the most compelling risk management issues of the day. This book is: - A comprehensive exposition of phytosanitary risk management. - Valuable both to the experienced risk manager and to those getting started in the field. - Written by a team of experts with extensive professional phytosanitary work experience and knowledge of plant health. Written for professionals, practitioners and policy makers who work in the international trade of plants and plant products and allied fields, this book provides the global phytosanitary community and its principal stakeholders with a practical guide to best risk management practices.

        Writing for Art

        The aesthetics of ekphrasis

        by Stephen Cheeke

        Writing for art is a concise introduction to the subject of ekphrasis, and the first study to offer a useful general survey of the larger philosophical and theoretical questions arising from the encounter of literary texts and artworks. Stephen Cheeke offers close readings of poems and prose from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries alongside a generous amount of illustrations, covering a broad range of writing and theory about the relation of literary texts to the visual arts, and extending the subject of ekphrasis to include literary works on photography, as well as celebrated prose descriptions of artworks. ;

        Nanoformulations for Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Risk Mitigation

        by Zeba Khan, Nicoleta Anca Sutan

        Nanotechnology research and its application in agriculture has become a major focus in recent years. Nanoformulations offer the possibility to develop more efficient and less damaging agrochemicals in the environment. Smart delivery systems for nanosensors, molecules that can help to detect biotic or abiotic stresses before they can affect production, are being developed and applied. Nanotechnology also provides new techniques for genetic manipulation and plant breeding. The use of nanoformulations in agriculture is increasingly being used to enhance food values, reduce agricultural inputs, improve nutrient contents and create a longer shelf life for many products. Nanotechnology is also being applied to many aspects of food security, disease treatment, new tools for pathogen detection, effective delivery systems and packaging materials. It is hoped that all these applications will help meet the needs of a growing population, and help mitigate the effects of climate change and other ecological disturbances. This book highlights new applications of these nanoforms in the field of agricultural science.It is written by an international team of experts from across this broad discipline.The book is essential reading for graduate students, researchers and practitioners involved in the application of nanotechnology in agriculture. Wie das Zebra zu seinen Streifen kommt

        Essays zur Naturgeschichte

        by Stephen Jay Gould, Stephen Cappellari

        Stephen Jay Goulds Essays zum Thema Evolution befassen sich sowohl mit dem rein politischen und nichtintellektuellen Streit, der durch die Anhänger der Kreationslehre angefacht worden ist, als auch mit der faszinierenden Debatte, die zur Zeit innerhalb der Evolutionstheorie stattfindet. »Das Einfließen von Fragen der Evolution in scheinbar nicht verwandte politische Diskussionen zeigt sowohl das weitläufige Ausmaß dieser Lebenseinstellung als auch den unlösbaren Zusammenhang wissenschaftlicher und sozialer Fragen. Die weiterführende und klarere Sicht, die aus der Evolutionstheorie hervorgeht, könnte unsere Auffassung von der Wissenschaft und von Erklärungsprozessen im allgemeinen vertiefen, indem sie die scheinbare Zufälligkeit der Geschichte und plötzliche Veränderungen (die erst im nachhinein sinnvoll werden) heraushebt gegenüber dem Bild einer vorhersehbaren und regelmäßigen Welt, wie es vom Stereotyp einer sogenannt ›harten‹ Wissenschaft gepredigt wird. Mit diesem Thema beschäftige ich mich in der ganzen Sammlung.« »Nur wenige Autoren sind wie Gould fähig, wissenschaftliche Arbeit mit solcher Klarheit von Denken und Schreiben zu verbinden. [...] Die meisten Essays beginnen mit einer nichtwissenschaftlichen Anekdote, und nach wenigen Seiten sind wir mühelos mitten in der Analyse komplexer biologischer Fragen.« (The New York Times Book Review) Stephen Jay Gould, geb. 1941 in New York, ist Professor an der Harvard Universität und lehrt Geologie, Biologie und Wissenschaftsgeschichte. In der Reihe suhrkamp taschenbuch wissenschaft liegen von seinen Büchern bereits vor: Der falsch vermessene Mensch (stw 583) sowie Der Daumen des Panda (stw 789).

        Zerstörung des moralischen Selbstbewußtseins: Chance oder Gefährdung?

        Praktische Philosophie in Deutschland nach dem Nationalsozialismus

        by Peter Rohs, Forum für Philosophie Bad Homburg, Siegfried Blasche, Wolfgang R. Köhler, Wolfgang Kuhlmann, Alan Posener

        Praktische Philosophie ist wesentlich Rekonstruktion von vortheoretischen moralischen Intuitionen und daher angewiesen auf ein grundsätzliches Vertrauen in die Gültigkeit des von ihr zu Rekonstruierenden. In kaum einem Teil der Welt wurde nun das Vertrauen in diese vortheoretischen moralischen Intuitionen derart tiefgehend und nachhaltig erschüttert, ja gebrochen, wie das in Deutschland durch den Nationalsozialismus geschah. Dieses Faktum bedeutet für die Moralphilosophie in Deutschland sowohl Chance wie auch Gefährdung. Es ist zugleich ein wichtiger Schlüssel für das Verständnis sowohl der besonderen Spannungen zwischen den verschiedenen Positionen der praktischen Philosophie innerhalb Deutschlands wie auch der Sonderstellung der praktischen Philosophie aus Deutschland gegenüber entsprechenden Bemühungen aus anderen westlichen Demokratien, die aus der ambivalenten Befangenheit der deutschen Philosophen resultiert.

        Zehn Milliarden

        by Stephen Emmott, Anke Burger

        Für die Herstellung eines Burgers braucht man 3000 Liter Wasser. Wir produzieren in zwölf Monaten mehr Ruß als im gesamten Mittelalter und fliegen allein in diesem Jahr sechs Billionen Kilometer. Unsere Enkel werden sich die Erde mit zehn Milliarden Menschen teilen müssen. Haben wir überhaupt eine Zukunft? Stephen Emmott, Leiter eines von Microsoft aufgebauten Forschungslabors und Professor in Oxford, schafft mit 'Zehn Milliarden' etwas Einzigartiges: Das erste Mal zeichnet ein Experte ein aktuelles und für jeden verständliches Bild unserer Lage. Kein theoretischer Überbau, kein moralischer Zeigefinger. Die nackten Fakten sind die dramatische Botschaft dieses Buches – und Emmott bringt sie auf besondere Weise zum Sprechen: in wenigen, klug arrangierten Sätzen und mit Bildern, die einem den Atem rauben. Das ist drastisch, doch viel drastischer ist, was wir der Erde angetan haben und immer noch antun. Und damit uns. 'Zehn Milliarden' ist der letzte Weckruf. Wir dürfen ihn nicht überhören.

        Risk and Safety Management in the Leisure, Events, Tourism and Sports Industries

        by Mark Piekarz, Ian Jenkins, Peter Mills

        The management of risk and safety is not simply a matter of trying to remove risks, but is necessary and vital to these industries. Sensible risk management is concerned with making the most of the positive opportunities or reducing the negative risks. This books shows how the absence of explicit risk practices is not necessarily an absence of risk management, and how many existing operational and strategic practices can be understood as part of a process of risk and safety management. Its main objective is to develop greater clarity in the communication of risks and the development of safety programmes, illustrating how organisations can use a single language of risk, relevant for all levels of management and areas of operation.

        The never-ending Brief Encounter

        by Brian McFarlane

        This is a book for all those who have been absorbed and moved by Brief Encounter in the seventy or so years since its first appearance. It explores the central relationship of the film, where two people who fall unexpectedly in love come to realise that there is more to life than self-gratification. Mores have undoubtedly changed, for better or worse, but that essential moral choice has never lost its power. While acknowledging this, the book goes further in an effort to account for the way the film has passed into the wider culture. People born decades after its first appearance are now adept at picking up references to it, whether a black-and-white scene in a much later film or a passing joke about a bald man in a barber's shop.

        Bovine Tuberculosis

        by Mark Chambers, Stephen Gordon, Francisco Olea-Popelka, Paul Barrow

        This book is contemporary, topical and global in its approach, and provides an essential, comprehensive treatise on bovine tuberculosis and the bacterium that causes it, Mycobacterium bovis. Bovine tuberculosis remains a major cause of economic loss in cattle industries worldwide, exacerbated in some countries by the presence of a substantial wildlife reservoir. It is a major zoonosis, causing human infection through consumption of unpasteurised milk or by close contact with infected animals. Following a systematic approach, expert international authors cover epidemiology and the global situation; microbial virulence and pathogenesis; host responses to the pathogen; and diagnosis and control of the disease. Aimed at researchers and practising veterinarians, this book is essential for those needing comprehensive information on the pathogen and disease, and offers a summary of key information learned from human tuberculosis research. It will be useful to those studying the infection and for those responsible for controlling the disease.
