        H. L. A. Hart (1907–1992) war Professor für Allgemeine Rechtslehre in Oxford. Jacob Taubes (1923-1987) war zuletzt Professor für Judaistik und Hermeneutik an der Freien Universität Berlin sowie ständiger Gastdozent an der Maison des Sciences de l'Homme in Paris. Jürgen Habermas wurde am 18. Juni 1929 in Düsseldorf geboren. Von 1949 bis 1954 studierte er in Göttingen, Zürich und Bonn die Fächer Philosophie, Geschichte, Psychologie, Deutsche Literatur und Ökonomie. Er lehrte unter anderem an den Universitäten Heidelberg und Frankfurt am Main sowie der University of California in Berkeley und war Direktor des Max-Planck-Instituts zur Erforschung der Lebensbedingungen der wissenschaftlich-technischen Welt in Starnberg. Jürgen Habermas erhielt zahlreiche Ehrendoktorwürden und Preise, darunter den Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels (2001) und den Kyoto-Preis (2004). Geboren am 5. Januar 1927 in Marburg, studierte Dieter Henrich von 1946 bis 1950 in Marburg, Frankfurt und Heidelberg  (u.a. bei Hans-Georg Gadamer) Philosophie. 1950 Dissertation: Die Grundlagen der Wissenschaftslehre Max Webers. Nach der Habilitation 1955/56 Lehrtätigkeiten als ordentlicher Professor in Berlin (ab 1960) und Heidelberg (ab 1965),  Gastprofessuren  in den USA ( Harvard, Columbia, University of Michigan, Yale);  1981  Berufung an die Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München, Ordinarius für Philosophie bis zur Emeritierung 1994. Seit 1997 Honorarprofessor an der Berliner Humboldt-Universität.

It focuses on the debates which shook French cinema, and the calls for film-makers to rethink their manner of filming, subject matter and ideals in the immediate aftermath of the student revolution of May 1968. Alison Smith examines the effect of this re-thinking across the spectrum of French production, the rise of new genres and re-formulation of older ones. Chapters investigate political thrillers, historical films, new naturalism and Utopian fantasies, dealing with a wide variety of films. A particular concern is the extent to which film-makers' ideas and intentions are contained in or contradicted by their finished work, and the gradual change in these ideas over the decade. The final chapter is a detailed study of two directors who were deeply involved in the debates and events of the 70s, William Klein and Alain Tanner, here taken as exemplary spokesmen for those changing debates as their echoes reached the cinema.

        John Polidori's novella The Vampyre (1819) is perhaps 'the most influential horror story of all time' (Frayling). Polidori's story transformed the shambling, mindless monster of folklore into a sophisticated, seductive aristocrat that stalked London society rather than being confined to the hinterlands of Eastern Europe. Polidori's Lord Ruthven was thus the ancestor of the vampire as we know it. This collection explores the genesis of Polidori's vampire. It then tracks his bloodsucking progeny across the centuries and maps his disquieting legacy. Texts discussed range from the Romantic period, including the fascinating and little-known The Black Vampyre (1819), through the melodramatic vampire theatricals in the 1820s, to contemporary vampire film, paranormal romance, and science fiction.         Victorian demons provides the first extensive exploration of largely middle-class masculinities in crisis at the fin de siècle. It analyses how ostensibly controlling models of masculinity became demonised in a variety of literary and medical contexts, revealing the period to be much more ideologically complex than has hitherto been understood, and makes a significant contribution to Gothic scholarship. Andrew Smith demonstrates how a Gothic language of monstrosity, drawn from narratives such as 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' and 'Dracula', increasingly influenced a range of medical and cultural contexts, destabilising these apparently dominant masculine scripts. He provides a coherent analysis of a range of examples relating to masculinity drawn from literary, medical, legal and sociological contexts, including Joseph Merrick ('The Elephant Man'), the Whitechapel murders of 1888, Sherlock Holmes's London, the writings and trials of Oscar Wilde, theories of degeneration and medical textbooks on syphilis. ;

Sein jüngstes Buch bestätigt den Ruf, der ihm vorausgeht: einer der führenden Interpreten wirtschaftlicher Entwicklungen und nationalökonomischer Theoriebildung zu sein. In systematischer Weise entfaltet Dobb an zwei herausragenden Problemstellungen – Einkommensverteilung und Wertlehre – die Entstehungs- und Klärungsprozesse der ökonomischen Theorie seit Smith (über Ricardo, Marx bis zu Keynes und Sraffa). Dies freilich – die Darstellung der ökonomischen Dogmengeschichte – ist nur die eine Seite der Dobbschen Argumentation; die andere bildet die ideologiekritische Auseinandersetzung mit der geschichtlichen Bedingtheit der ökonomischen Deutungssysteme und der mehr oder weniger »apologetischen« Funktion der aus ihnen abgeleiteten wirtschaftspolitischen Lösungsvorschläge. Es ist das große Verdienst der Arbeit von Dobb, den Erklärungsanspruch ökonomischer Theorien nicht nur logisch-immanent zu analysieren, sondern auch im Hinblick auf ihr Verhältnis zu der von ihnen beschriebenen Wirklichkeit.

        Christoph Martin Wieland wurde am 5. September 1733 in Oberholzheim geboren. Nach dem Besuch des pietistischen Internats Kloster Berge bei Magdeburg begann er 1749 ein Philosophie-Studium in Erfurt. Ein Jahr später wechselte er zu einem Jura-Studium nach Tübingen. Ab 1752 arbeitete er als Hauslehrer in der Schweiz. Während seiner Professur an der Universität Erfurt von 1769 bis 1772 gründete er die Zeitschrift »Der Teutsche Merkur«, die eine herausragende Stellung im Geistesleben der Zeit einnahm und so zu Weimars Rolle als literarisches Zentrum beitrug. Er veröffentlichte im Merkur eine Vielzahl eigener Essays und Aufsätze, beschäftigte sich mit philosophischen, politischen, gesellschaftlichen und ästhetischen Fragen. Daneben schrieb er Romane, Satiren und Dramen und übersetzte Shakespeare ins Deutsche. Christoph Martin Wieland starb am 20. Januar 1813 in Weimar.

        Charles Dickens called his sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth his 'best and truest friend'. Georgina saw Dickens as much more than a friend. They lived together for twenty-eight years, during which time their relationship constantly changed. The sister of his wife Catherine, the sharp and witty Georgina moved into the Dickens home aged fifteen. What began as a father-daughter relationship blossomed into a genuine rapport, but their easy relations were fractured when Dickens had a mid-life crisis and determined to rid himself of Catherine. Georgina's refusal to leave Dickens and his desire for her to remain in his household led to rumours of an affair and even illegitimate children. He left her the equivalent of almost £1 million and all his personal papers in his will. Georgina's commitment to Dickens was unwavering but it is far from clear what he did to deserve such loyalty. There were several occasions when he misused her in order to protect his public reputation. Why did Georgina betray her once much-loved sister? Why did she fall out with her family and risk her reputation in order to stay with Dickens? And why did the Dickenses' daughter Katey say it was 'the greatest mistake ever' to invite a sister-in-law to live with a family?
